Southern Hills District Committee on Ministry (SH dCOM) The Southern Hills District Committee on Ministry (SH dCOM) has set the following interview dates for the 2013-2014 Conference year. This information is listed in order to help local pastors and others desiring to interviewed, but it should be noted that this information is subject to change. If you have questions please contact one of the dCOM members listed below. SH dCOM Interview Dates Thursday November 7th, 2013 Saturday February 1st, 2014 Thursday February 6th, 2014 (if needed) Thursday May 8th, 2014 (if needed)
The Registrar for SH dCOM will contact you approximately 1 month before you interview, scheduling your interview time and giving you your written requirements. Unless otherwise noted, all written assignments and other forms must be in the dCOM Registrar’s possession 10 days prior to your interview. Interviews are generally held at the district office during the morning hours. Remember, it is your responsibility to contact the dCOM Registrar and request your annual interview with dCOM. We will do our best to remind you, but the ultimate responsibility is yours.

Page 2 Applicants for Provisional Membership If you desire to become a Provisional Member you will need to complete the requirements set by the Board of Ordained Ministry. There is a lot of work to do in preparing for Provisional Membership, therefore you will want to start your process in August or sooner. If you have questions will probably need to contact to the Board of Ordained Ministry registrar.
Page 3 COS+3 Local Pastors COS+3 Local Pastors are pastors who have completed either Course of Study (COS) or seminary and then served under appointment for at least 3 years after completing their schooling. SH dCOM will be offers COS+3 Local Pastors an opportunity to go through a special interview process which allows the COS+3 Local Pastor, if approved by dCOM, to be released from annual interviews with dCOM. Those pastors approved as COS+3 will interview once every four years in a “courtesy interview.” If you qualify as a COS+3 Local Pastor, you will receive a letter from dCOM inviting you to participate in this special interview process. If you have not received a letter you may contact the SH dCOM Chairperson or Registrar to talk about becoming COS+3. You do not have to go through this process. If you turn down your invitation you will be required to do annual interviews with dCOM in order to be recertified as a Local Pastor each year, just as you always had done in the past. If you participate, prior to the meeting you will be required to submit: 1. Your Charge Conference Pastor’s Reports from the last three years 2. The “Faith Journey” portion of your Clergy Profile Long Term Information (the district secretary/superintendent might be able to help you find copies of these papers) On the day of your interview you will go through three hour-long interviews covering these three subject areas: 1) Theology & Biblical Studies; 2) UM Polity & Practice of Ministry; and 3) Self Care: Spiritual Disciplines & Psychological Health. Southern Hills dCOM Guidelines for Implementing EOC Policy (April 20, 2004) for Local Pastors COS+3yrs 1. dCOM will compile a list of all Local Pastors who qualify for EOC Local Pastor Policy established April 20, 2004. 2. SH dCOM interprets qualifying Local Pastors to be: a. Local Pastors who have completed either COS or seminary; b. And, in addition, will have completed by Annual Conference three years under part or full-time appointment after their graduation. 3. Invitation to a special interview process will be extended to only those qualifying Local Pastors which dCOM votes by ¾ majority to recommend for release from annual interview with dCOM. 4. Local Pastors may choose to accept or decline dCOM invitation. 5. Local Pastors who accept dCOM invitation will be required to submit their previous three years’ charge conference Pastor’s Reports and the “Faith Journey” portion of your Clergy Profile Long Term Information that is filed with the District Superintendent. 6. Local Pastors who accept the dCOM invitation may be given a sample list of questions which they might expect to experience during their interview process. This list of interview questions may be taken from the BOM suggested interview questions for applicants for Provisional Membership. 7. dCOM shall set up a special interview process in which the Local Pastor will be interviewed in the areas of “Theology & Biblical Studies,” “UM Polity & Practice of Ministry,” and “Self Care: Spiritual Disciplines & Psychological Health.” Each area will be covered by a different interview team, which ultimately means the Local Pastor will be interviewed three times. Local Pastors will be informed of this interview process and the three areas of focus prior to the interview so that they have a chance to prepare themselves for these three areas of questioning. 8. dCOM will vote on the motion: “I recommend _____ (name) _____ be released from the obligation of further mentoring and the annual interview with dCOM.” 9. The motion will require a ¾ majority. 10.Approved Local Pastors will be required to attend courtesy interviews with dCOM every 4 years. 11.dCOM may vote to overturn the Local Pastor’s release at anytime through a simple majority vote. (approved 2-9-12) 4
Page 5 Local Pastors (Full-time, Part-Time, and Retired Local Pastors) Requirements for all Local Pastors who have not completed Course of Study (COS) or Seminary: 1. Submit a “Request for Renewal” form (to get a copy contact the SH dCOM Registrar). 2. Answer the following questions and submit them to the dCOM Registrar prior to your interview (4 to 7 pages total): a. What is your process for making disciples of Jesus Christ? b. What went well for you in your church this year, and what did you learn from this experience? c. What did not go well for you in your church this year, and what did you learn from this experience? d. What are you going to do differently in your church in the coming year? 3. Submit a recent paper you wrote for COS. This is a chance to highlight some of your best work. Papers that are most helpful to the dCOM show evidence of your personal theological or ecclesiological thinking. 4. Also, you must submit a copy of your current school transcript so we can see what progress you have made in completing your educational requirements over the past year. Requirements for Local Pastors who have completed their educational requirements or are retired but have not been approved as COS+3: 1. Come to your interview prepared to answer the following questions verbally. a. What is your process for making disciples of Jesus Christ? b. What went well for you in your church this year, and what did you learn from this experience? c. What did not go well for you in your church this year, and what did you learn from this experience? d. What are you going to do differently in your church in the coming year? 2. Submit a copy of your Charge Conference Pastor’s Report from the previous year.
Page 6 Certified Candidates and Applicants for Certified Candidacy Requirements for Candidates applying for first time certification: 1. See 2012 Book of Discipline paragraph 310 for qualifications, etc. 2. Submit your written responses to paragraph 310.1.d of the 2012 Book of Discipline. 3. Be sure the dCOM Registrar has received the items listed in the 2012 Book of Discipline paragraph 310.2.b. 4. Ask the Registrar if any other forms/items/etc. are needed as allowed by par. 310.2.c. Requirements for those asking to be continued as a Certified Candidate: 1. Personal Paper (3 to 5 pages): What ministry have you done in this past year? How has this experience helped you clarify your calling and further prepared you for future pastoral ministry? 2. Seminary or COS students: a. Give us a copy of an academic paper you submitted for one of your classes during the past year. It should be a paper that focuses on a theological concept, interpretation of a Bible passage/topic, or it could be sermon manuscript submitted for a class. b. Submit your school class transcript so we can see that you are continuing to work on meeting your educational requirements.
Page 7 Miscellaneous Interviews The Southern Hills District Committee on Ministry (dCOM) is sometimes asked by the District Superintendent to do other courtesy interviews. These interviews shall be initiated at the suggestion of the District Superintendent. After which the dCOM Chairperson or Registrar will contact the individual to schedule an interview and to set any needed requirements.
