event @lucknow campus
Ask management students to let their creative imagination free and then see what innovative and creative ideas they will come up with. This was exactly what Jaipuria Institute of Management; Lucknow did with the first year students recently. The students were asked to come up with innovative ideas and present them before experts so that their oral communication skills and the power to convince could be judged. The event was organized on December 28, 2010 by Dr. Deepa Sethi, a faculty member of the Department of Communications, who planned it under the Oral Communication Skills course, under the title of Expo – Communicate to Convince. This was a project to test the oral communication skills in which the students also had to display something unique. The students were divided into groups of seven and were asked to conceptualize a unique product or service or idea, think of its marketing strategy, design its promotional policy, create its model, and convince people with their oral communication skills, using persuasion and negotiation skills, marketing skills The students were divided into groups of seven and were asked to conceptualize a unique product or service or idea, think of its marketing strategy, design its promotional policy, create its model, and convince people with their oral communication skills, using persuasion and negotiation skills, marketing skills; keeping in view the financial aspects of the product or service. Students visualized various innovative products like the Acubag, which students can carry to school in place of ordinary bags. This multi‐purpose bag would address the critical issue of back problems due to heavy bags and is based on the acupressure therapy principle. One of the groups presented Butter Finger, which can be used to spread butter by twisting and rubbing it on the slice. It works like a glue stick and can be used by children without smudging butter in their hands. Next on the list of innovative ideas were Luminous Shoes. Students fitted small bulbs attached with a battery at the front of the shoes. When one puts on the shoes, the bulbs glow with one’s body weight and produce enough light so that one can walk without disturbing others at night. Another group had something unique to offer in the form of a portable and light product called Bre‐Coff‐Tea. Not only can this product toast bread in minutes but it can also keep your coffee or tea hot.
There were certain other innovative ideas like Service‐a‐Car while shopping; I‐Stand fitted with chargers to charge your I‐Pods and I‐ Phones; Thinking Cap; Medical ID Jewellery and many more. The students were tested on their clarity of thoughts. The event also assessed their convincing skills and their confidence level. Prof. S. Chakraborty, the Director of the institute and faculty members from various areas adjudged the communication skills of the students, their non‐verbal communication, and their confidence in an evaluation rubric created by Dr. Deepa Sethi. The event culminated with a personal viva of every member of the presenting groups.
