This 18 storey office building is located within “Campus Audiovisual”, a part of the regenerated 19th century industrial area of Poblenou, fronting a southern section of the Diagonal Avenue and close to the boundary of the Eixample and Sant Martí areas of the city. The project occupies approximately one half of an urban block within Ildelfons Cerda’s masterplan. Simple and bold sculptural forms have been carved out of the given project boundaries. I joined this project in the earlier stages as a team member and head of the interior design in coordination with David Chipperfield office in London. After some slow phases I made my way up to lead the whole project. I was in charge for the whole site work, task would include coordination with DCA in London, drawing and designing in Barcelona, service engineers, structure engineers, consultants and client, over viewing budgets and work along constructor and craftsmen. Budget was really tight so it was a challenge to redesign many issues to match the client requirements and make a fine DCA office building. The building raises 72 metres height over the ground and it’s divided in 18 levels, plus 3 basements, completing a total gross floor area of 24387 square metres.

The spaces between these buildings form small plazas -social spaces that link the buildings of the master plan. To reinforce the object - like quality of each building. The building seeks integration into the new composition of the Campus Audiovisual sector in a coherent and harmonious way. The proposal for the sector is that it should be a permeable comb linking Avinguda Diagonal with the interior of the Campus Audiovisual, creating spaces to which the public has access that bring the various volumes together. In the Ground floor, the entrance to the offices in the upper floors divides the commercial surface in 2 different areas for different retail stores. The building consists of two differentiated parts: the lower floors-levels 1 to 10-, which form an irregular rhomboid, align with Diagonal and form the base of the building; while the upper floors -levels 11 to 18-, trapezoidal in shape, break with the alignment of Diagonal, withdrawing towards the interior of the block to create a slenderer volume to crown the building .CA-Site plan

The client will rent the building to multiple unknown tenants, and each one of the lower levels -from 1 to 10- can be subdivided in offices for 3 different tenants, that lead us to seek maximum flexibility. In order to guarantee as many organizing options as possible for each office space, structural separation between columns is set allowing the building to have different office separations and optimize it in terms of parking in the 3 basements. A module of 0.6m is fixed for every single element in the building, inside or outside. The core includes common spaces such as corridors, toilettes, installation patios, and rooms, stairs and elevators. In terms of interior design, the core is considered a dark island in a white ocean, The core is all designed in black or grey materials to contrast the white light continuos office working spaces The core is design with a silver open grey grid luxalon ceiling and local black terrazzo in the floor, the elevator lobby is cladded with full height coated steel 1,2m wide reinforced panels matching the floor joints. The working spaces are design with a white perforated armstrong ceiling. A range perforation superior to 50% allows A/C to be impulsed through the panels, allowing to have a more continuous ceiling wit less breaking elements.

The building tries to express its massiveness and materiality through its façade. The abstract quality of the façade is generated by a random pattern of full-height window openings. For environmental efficiency the range of openings vary according to orientation of each façade. The simple plan form of the building provides flexibility and permits a variety of space configurations with full-height windows in every space. .CA-Building elevations

In the front façade a big canopy welcomes the visitors, while the back façade hosts the emergency doors, fire hoses, and parking ventilation ducts and grids. Coloured, GRC -glass fibre reinforced concrete- panels are arranged vertically over the entire façade and into the lining of each window space with a precision and sculptural quality appropriate to both the climate and craft traditions of Barcelona

The building and park were the social focal point for the 2007 America’s Cupthe world’s premier offshore racing competition-, staged in Europe for the first time in over 150 years following Swiss Team Alinghi’s over Team New Zealand in 2003, and the selection of Valencia as host city. The Louis Vuitton Cup started in April 2007. I started to work in this project from the beginning of the competition, with only 2 more members. It was a tight schedule with crazy deadlines. Competition was won in May, 2005 and the building was completed in 2006. Since the very first moment the building was one of Valencia’s new icons, the building, situated in the harbour seems to be one more boat, its outstanding terraces invite the guests to watch the races and give sun protection at the same time. My work during the competition was to help develop the ideas and concepts and drawing. After the competition a strong team was set to develop the project in a record time, then I was in charge of interior design and some façade details.

The America’s Cup Building “Veles e Vents” (Sails and Winds) was completed within 11 months of winning the competition in June 2005. The building and its accompanying park were successfully opened in time for the preliminary regattas, staged in May and June 2006. The centrepiece of the reorganisation of Valencia’s industrial port, “Veles e Vents” provided a central base for all America’s Cup teams and sponsors, as well as being a venue for the public to view the racing.

The building’s ground floor acts as the reception area for VIP facilities and has a canal-facing public restaurant and bar. The first floor is entirely open to the public with retail facilities, a bar, and a generous viewing deck connecting to the park via a separate ramp. The second and the third floors house the VIP facilities -the “Foredeck Club”, a restaurant, a wellness centre, and lounges for the America’s Cup Management, Louis Vuitton, and Consorcio Valencia 2007. “Veles e Vents” utilises a reduced palette of materials - white painted steel trims the edges of the concrete structure, the ceiling is constructed of white metal panels incorporating linear recessed lighting, the external floors are solid pine tree decking, and the internal floors are beige resin. Simply coloured furniture offsets the predominant whiteness of the structure, and distinguishes the different areas of the building. The 10,000 square meter, four-floor concrete building is composed of a series of stacked and shifting horizontal planes that provide shade and interrupted views extending to the sea. Cantiveler floor slabs - the largest reaching out 15 metres - create the outdoor viewing decks that surround each floor. 60 percent of the building is taken by outdoor space.

“Veles e Vents” connects directly to a new park, built above 15,000 square meters of car parking. A “tail” of elevated public spectator decks stretches out from the building into the port, with bars, retail stores, restaurants, and information points. The decks overlook a newly excavated canal that links the port to the offshore racing courses. To the north, a new 100,000 square metre park links the city to the new seafront.

This project is the result of winning a restricted competition organized by the World Trade Centre and Igualada’s Town Hall. The proposal responds to the social and economic requirements of the new Igualada, a town in a process of development. I took charge of the competition and the project “basico” stage. The competition was won against some of the best architectural firms in Barcelona. Project has a total gross floor of nearly 75,000 square metres and 25,000 square meters of park in the same lot. Base design project stage was developed in a record time, drawn with revit software. The client was very much satisfied with the result, however some politic issues and problems finding developers made the project stop. A new option was developed them, creating a much bigger retail store area with a french developer. Integració amb l’entorn

Es proposa una intervenció única amb un cos continu “un llaç” que aporta unitat i contundència a la operació i continuïtat al conjunt and del projecte una imatge mes hoteldonant occupy the upper impactant, la continuïtat és fonamentalment visual mitjançant un cos continu que queda tallat a les zones d’unió entre diferent parcel·les.

Per reforçar aquesta idea de continuïtat s’estableix en tot el projecte una cornisa contínua a la cota màxima permesa per la normativa. De la cornisa cap avall es desenvoluparà l’edifici. A la planta baixa es planteja el mateix concepte, però el mecanisme utilitzat és el de donar continuïtat als recorreguts plantejats mitjançant línies d’oportunitat creades a partir de la unió dels punts més transitats del projecte.

The set comprises four buildings divided into four distinct zones of uses (area offices, commercial area, hotel and parking) generating a recognizable set. The commercial space is positioned as a socket, differing from the upper floors of offices, and maintaining a continuous cornice. Among the commercial space and the offices space a mattress is created, as a large crack shaded, with variable height that breaks its rigidity. The higher levels of the buildings, where the offices and hotel are located, differs from the bottom, moving and generating a gallery deck that serves as a shelter against the rain and as an access to the commercial area. .WTC-Location photograph

The area is close to Igualada’s downtown in a new developing area where the walkers traffic is supposed to be really important in the next few years. Main walking points are detected. Plotting imaginary lines between those points would reveal hypothetical paths. Respecting these paths would allow everyone to walk through the commercial area freely. The idea is to attract the walker inside the building making it easier to walk inside the mall than in the street.

The project’s success is based in the commercial area, retail stores will activate the whole area making attractive the project for the companies to set their offices in the upper floors and finding a hotel developer. The basis of this commercial areas are to set the biggest retail stores in the “head” and the “tail” of the lot and have it all divided between Ground Floor and First Floor. That and our walking paths through the ground floor and the design of the landscape will attract all the visitors inside the complex. A big 3 level parking in the basement joining all the buildings underground will assure that visitors can come with their own vehicle as well, attracting many people from the towns around.

In the office area, the cores containing elevators, stairs and service areas are located in the middle of the plan allowing maximum flexibility to the future tenants to rent different areas of the building. The fact of having these cores inside might create internal corridors. So big interconnected terraces are placed in every floor, allowing natural daylight in the corridors and adding quality relaxing common spaces to the building, and creating an attractive image to the façade. The façade is covered by a metallic mesh and glass, so somehow due to reflections the building can disappear in the daylight hours and show activity at night. .WTC-Render image

An isolated detached house in Girona, the terrain where the plot is, has a strong slope and an irregular shape, giving good orientation and viewing conditions. Under strict normative that require the use of stone on facades and an sloped tile roof, the project consists of three levels adapting the program to the site’s natural slope. The site is a rural and exclusive area consisting in 4 plots, our clients wanted the house as a second residence for the weekends. A friend of the family without large experience as a constructor was contracted to do the job, so my rol was not only the regular architect duties but I also had to be the project manager to be sure that the house would be finished in time and in budget. It was my pleasure to work with outstanding craft men -metal work and timber work- who made possible the final result. It was very interesting matching modern design and concept in a traditional frame. The reduced dimensions of the programme enabled the house to be conceived as a compact box with stone walls and with openings of different dimensions that offer framed views of the landscape. There are skylights within the volume to bring indirect daylight and air to the inner parts of the house.

The project is arranged in parallel bands as a way to adapt itself to the topography: The upper band- North-west orientation- contains the main house entrance, dividing the master bedroom, from the rest of the areas, with a bathroom and a big walk-in closet, the bedroom area for kids, with bathrooms, the main entrance, a small toilette and the garage. The mid level -South-east orientation-contains the living room, dinning room, pool room and kitchen. The southern facade gives onto a terrace covered with a pergola, conceived as an interior space open to the garden The lowest level, a semi-basement, contains rooms for guests.

In the interior, the palette of materials is reduced as well as in the outside. The walls are either cladded with plaster board or plaster render and white painted. The box containing the kitchen and the corridor and living room shelves are cladded with oak timber. The closets are white painted DM boards. For the floors, the lower levels a local stone is used with 80x80 centimetres module is used, while in the night areas a wooden oak floor is set for a more domestic feeling. Marble is used in the bathrooms and white ceramic tiles. All the metalwork is grey -RAL 7022- painted with a special paint used in the ocean platforms to prevent the exposed elements from rusting. The windows are coated in that same 7022 RAL.

Local stone is used to clad the walls. One craftsman sets all the façades by himself. A brick wall is raised to hold the stone, isolation is in the interior side the walls are finished with plaster render or plasterboard. A thin strip of Zinc crowns the top of the façades preventing the water to cause damages. Skylights are carefully designed and isolated so they can interrupt the roof isolation and waterproof membranes with guarantees. One of the skylight’s boxes is used to expel the smoke from the fireplace, in order to avoid having a high chimney breaking the house design. Pierre Soulages is an abstract French Painter born in 1919. His home town, Rodez, is building this museum to collect all the masterpieces created by this gorgeous living legend. RCR, as a talented firm took the project. Due to the project’s difficulty, RCR decided to collaborate with Exedra and let them develop all the construction drawings and details, so the project could be built on time. I worked developing these drawings and helping in the coordination between RCR, the structures and service engineers and the local architect in France. The building rests in the top of a hill with outstanding viewing. The whole program is divided in 5 different boxes and the interstitial space between them. This distribution scheme creates itself a large range of different spaces with different qualities.

The building is divided in 3 levels. And the main entrance is situated in the highest level. Level 0 is the main entrance level, also containing the reception hall, museum store, auditorium, offices, arts and crafts ateliers and restaurant. Level -1 hosts most of the exhibition art spaces and the main museum activities. Level-2 is basement which includes a reduced parking, most of service spaces and storage art pieces.

Steel is practically the only material used in this project, and it’s used in many different ways with many different treatments, corten steel, pickled steel, stainless steel, natural steel..... These different kinds of steel are place according to conceptual lines and pragmatic maintenance needs. The walls of the boxes have a concrete structure, while the rest of the building is sustained by thin metallic ribs creating a rhythm. Same kind of metallic ribs are used to cover the boxes with the same rhythm -in the crossed direction- to illuminate the building with indirect natural daylight. The different kinds of steel need different fixings and according to the situation and conditions the same material can have different fixings too. The idea is to set up the material without welding or screws and with maximum dimensions. Many times fixings need to allow to be registered for maintenance, all these inputs provoke highly complicated details Walls are high, that might cause imperfections in the execution, every metal fixing attached to a concrete wall will need a big allowance in order to respect the building modules. The fixings need to be able to move according to the structure imperfections.
