Music city faceoff on tap this weekend

UAH takes the shortest trip in school history for a contest this weekend making the 2-hour trip up Interstate 65 to take on Hockey East’s Merrimack in a two-game set at Bridgestone Arena, home of the NHL’s Nashville Predators. The series marks the first NCAA hockey contests in the history of the state of Tennessee as part of a plan to grow the visability of college hockey in the Southeast. The meeting between the Chargers and Warriors is the first between the two clubs since 1994 when both teams were NCAA Division II members. UAH split the series with Merrimack and eventually wound up in the 1994 NCAA Division II National Championship against Bemidji State that BSU won two games to one. Merrimack enters this weekend with the highest ranking and best stat in school history as the Warriors ranked No. 15 in both the USCHO.com and USAToday Polls and are 10-4-4. Merrimack boasts a stingy defense posting a 2.06 GAA that ranks second best in the nation.

geoffrions return TO Volunteer state

UAH sophomore Sebastian Geoffrion and Charger freshman Brice Geoffrion return to their home state this weekend for the series with Merrimack. The Geoffrion’s call Brentwood, Tenn., home and are brothers to 2010 Hobey Baker Award Winner and current Nashville Predators prospect Blake Geoffrion. Sebastian has seen action in 21 games this season having scored a goal and added three assists. Brice is still looking for his first collegiate point

BLUELINER BAXTER LEADING THE CHARGE

Senior defenseman Matt Baxter enters this weekend with the team lead in points with 19 (8g, 11a), a number that ranks 12th best in the nation in blueliner scoring. Having played in 112 games, more than any other Charger, the assistant captain has hit his stride in his senior season more than doubling his previous career point total. Baxter’s six power-play goals rank the senior tied for ninth best in the nation. The Courtice, Ontario native also entered last weekend’s series

POWER PLAY CONVERTING

The Charger power play has seen plenty of success in 2010-11 having notched 27 goals with the man advantage this season ranking the Blue and White with the fourth-most power-play goals in the nation. The Chargers boast a 22.5% conversion rate that ranks 10th-best in Division I hockey.

NEW FACES APLENTY

Along with a new head coach at the top, the Chargers have a number of other new members of the staff and team. Mike Warde returns to college hockey this fall as the Chargers top assistant having previously coached at Iona and Army. Warde is joined by former Denver standout Gavin Morgan, who has spent the last 10-plus years playing professional hockey. The Chargers also welcomed in 11 freshmen into the program and those newcomers are already having an immediate impact as all 11 seen the ice in 2010-11. Freshman forward Mac Roy is tied for fourth on the team in scoring with 12 points (4g, 8a) on the young season. The youth movement is front and center for the program as UAH features only eight players combined that are of junior or senior status.

NASHVILLE SERIES QUICKLY APPROACHING

Early in 2011, the Chargers will take their shortest road trip in school history to play a contest as UAH hosts Merrimack at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, home of the Nashville Predators. The two-game series mark the first NCAA Division I hockey games in the history of the state of Tennessee. Tickets are on sale now for both games as well as the Predators/Blackhawks contest that follows UAH’s Saturday matinee.

Talbot PLAYING WELL in ahl

After backing the Chargers to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2010, Cameron Tablot was signed to an NHL deal by the New York Rangers. Talbot opened his professional career with a bang, notching a 41-save shutout in his first pro start. Since then, Talbot has been solid for the Hartford Wolfpack posting a 5-2-2 mark with a .918 save percentage and a 2.41 GAA.

BURKY RETURNS AS CAPTAIN

For the second-straight season, Charger senior Ryan Burkholder was chose by his teammates to wear the “C” for UAH. Joining Burkholder in the leadership role are assistant captains Matt Baxter, Chris Fairbanks and Curtis deBruyn.

FROZEN FOUR ALMOST HERE

The sunshine and beaches of Tampa Bay are almost here for the 2012 Frozen Four hosted by the Chargers in April 2012. A limited number of tickets will be available through the UAH Athletics ticket office. Details on those ticket sales will be made avaiable soon to the general public.

After spending two seasons as the Chargers’ top assistant coach, Chris Luongo was promoted to head coach of the AlabamaHuntsville program in July 2010.
