Rosi Robinson Pushing Boundaries in Batik 3 days: 15th-17th August Fee: £350 Discover the magic of batik and the wonderful variety and possibilities this resist technique has to offer. This three-day workshop is designed for all levels to discover a variety of approaches to this traditional Far Eastern technique of decorating fabric, using hot liquid wax and fibre-reactive dyes. Explore both traditional and modern techniques and develop them into both pictorial art forms or purely expressive abstract designs. What students will achieve You will learn methods of applying wax with a variety of tools – how to etch (sgraffito), how to create texture by crackling and spattering the wax. You will also learn to apply colour in a variety of ways on different fabrics including direct-dyeing (hand-painting) and dip-dyeing. You will be shown how to develop a batik ‘painting’ – how to build up layers of colour whilst capturing the detail by applying hot wax at each stage. The waxed areas will resist the next application of colour. Rosi will take you through different projects – water, reflections, flowers, etc and show how to work individually from your own drawings or photos.

Jenny Adin-Christie The Peacock Etui & Peacock Tail Needlecase 4 days: 15th-16th, 18th-19thth August OR 22nd-23rd, 25th-26th August Fee: £460 My Peacock Etui is inspired by the ingenious 3D embroidered creatures by 17th century embroiderers and by my own travels to India. What students will achieve You will learn how to create this unique design using an eclectic mix of fibres and techniques. The peacock’s tail depicts iridescent feathers in padded satin stitch, needle painting and metal thread work using silks, gimp, chenilles, metal plates and metal purls, combined with sparkling Swarovski crystals. The tail is detachable, revealing a place to store your precious needles beneath. It can be worked alone as a stunning needlecase in its own right.   The body is worked over a 3D printed form with sterling silver beak and bronze legs.

Class kit Peacock Etui £180, Peacock Tail Needlecase £105. The kits contain all the threads, materials, needles and construction items, plus comprehensive instruction manual.

Jenny Adin-Christie The Blue Wren Etui 4 days: 15th-16th, 18th-19thth August OR 22nd-23rd, 25th-26th August Fee: £460 After teaching in Australia, Jenny has been inspired to create a partner to her ever-popular brown wren design – the Australian Splendid Fairy Wren. This stunning blue bird holds a special place in Aboriginal Dreamtime tradition. What students will achieve You will construct the head plumage, chest feathers, wings and tail as panels to apply to a 3D printed body. Each piece uses Jenny’s design of elaborate and unusual stitches and specially sourced materials, including tweed, Italian Rayon tapes, metallics, pure silk threads and tiny blue sequins. The Wren has solid bronze legs and beak with a tiny cutting blade. The wings form a needlecase and there is a slot in the Wren’s back to hold a waxer (sold separately). You can also work the mossy hillock as an extra.

Class kit Jenny has a beautiful kit for the Wren at a cost of £180. She can also offer the base and exclusively designed accessories. Please visit our site for more details.

Janet Bolton Fabric Pictures 2 days: 15th-16th August Fee: £230 Janet composes textile pictures using the simplest of hand sewing techniques. Her inspiration comes from visual experience, memory, imagination – and sometimes from some quality inspired by the material itself. Join this class to share her techniques and inspiration. What students will achieve The main aim of this workshop is to encourage students to develop their own ideas – with Janet’s help readily available. Working directly with the fabric, Janet explains and demonstrates the simple techniques required. She will share her signature ‘needle turning’ appliqué method and help you discover different ways to shape and finish your work. She will demonstrate the exciting process of cutting shapes, rearranging and sewing down the various elements until a pleasing composition is achieved. As Janet says, “the emphasis is what you place where”.

Caroline Zoob Paint into Stitch 2 days: 22nd-23rd August Fee: £230 Caroline was one of the first to use vintage fabric like a paint box. This two-day workshop explores the possibilities of using paint as a ground for hand embroidery. Painting on linen is different to painting on paper, and even if you have never painted on paper before, you will be astonished by the effects you achieve through the interaction of dilute paint and warp and weft. Whether you use this only as a colour map for your embroidery, or stitch into the painted areas, it is the most enjoyable experience. Indeed, ‘addictive’ is the word usually uttered after a few moments of laying brush on linen!

Class materials There is no formal kit for this class but Caroline will bring fabric paints (£10 contribution requested) and a selection of vintage linens (priced individually).

What students will achieve To start you will create different palettes and make marks on antique linen using various brushes and techniques, before experimenting with both hand and machine embroidery to add detail. Once you are confident with the techniques, you will work either from a blank canvas, or choose from a series of screen prints on antique linen to paint and stitch. It might be a landscape with a wildflower meadow, or an autumn wreath, or a group of foxgloves.

Caroline Zoob Exploring White in Textile & Stitch 2 days: 25th-26th August Fee: £230 This is not a whitework embroidery class but a creative exploration of the possibilities of white. Caroline loves white-on-white, and in this workshop we will look at very subtle variations in the shade, and how to add texture by layering fabrics and raising stitches. She says, “I am inspired by faded, crumbling plaster and peeling paint, broken surfaces that throw out suggestions of a shape which you can develop into a bird, or tree, or outline.” This is a lovely class for experienced embroiderers who want to build on their stitching repertoire and try something different.

Class materials You will be working with precious antique fabrics – all part of the pleasure! You can make your selection from Caroline’s collection. She requests a £15 fee towards materials.

www.bathtextilesummerschool.co.uk

What students will achieve You will have access to a collection of pale and interesting antique linens, whitework, laces and threads, from which you will each make a piece of textile art: it might be a pieced panel of different antique linens, on to which you layer fragments of fabric and stitch. It might be representational, or abstract. For those who prefer to work with the techniques but want something more structured, Caroline will offer tracings and screen printed pieces for you to work from.

Anne Kelly House & Home 2 days: 22nd-23rd August Fee: £230 Working with techniques and influences from Anne’s book, Textile Folk Art, you will be making a special piece inspired by architecture. Growing up in Canada, Anne’s work has been informed by her connection to folk art and North American quilts. You will use a variety of found textiles, techniques and stitch to create a textile collage representing a house of your choice. The course is suitable for all levels of creativity and ability. What students will achieve You will be making a layered textile collage, using recycled and newer materials. You can make a house/building and garden, or you can concentrate on the house. Buildings are always a rich source of design material for textile collage work – details like doors, windows and garden elements add character and are enjoyable to translate in stitch. Anne will help you translate your vision into cloth, developing your interpretive style. Sewing machines are not essential but can be used if desired for the embellishing stage of your design.

Anne Kelly Mapping your Travels 2 days: 25th-26th August Fee: £230 “I am sitting on a train, looking out the window, thinking about the landscapes, towns and hamlets we are passing by. How do I begin to convey this in cloth and how to tell the stories, histories and about the lives of the people and places seen?” Anne Kelly Textile Travels (Batsford 2020) What students will achieve Working from a collection of photos or postcards, old receipts, maps and brochures, we will create a folding book or collaged piece using these elements. The resulting piece will be a personal response to a special place, journey or event. Stitch, drawing and collage will be used and this course is suitable for hand and/or machine stitching. It is helpful to choose a theme (a special place or visit) and colour palette before you begin the course.
