English Leather Craft Live Brief

EDNA is a portable device that aids treatment and recovery for eating disorders. The product creates heat, vibration, lighting and imagery projection to provide comfort and relaxation, which is simply activated through personal interaction.

EDNA

Major Project

Primary Research Case Study; Inside the ‘Irwin’ Unit, Parkview Clinic, Birmingham

Secondary Research, Concepts & Development

EDNA acts as a self-heated water bottle once interacted with. Reaching the same temperature as a hot water bottle.

Vibration is pulsed with 5 second intervals to mimic and guide our breathing cycle. This helps to calm down in stressful environments and situations.

Light glows and changes colour when interaction occurs for long periods of time. Imagery is projected onto the surface. e.g. water ripples for calming the mind.

Wireless charger acts as a stand for ‘EDNA’. Easily charge with the indication of a glow when charging. Allowing ease of portability.

KIOSK

We had to create a kiosk display to provide services and advertisement in a public environment for the company.

SHOP

We created a large scale feature shop. Displaying electronic devices to incorporate the company’s service and entice customers with the environment.

FLAGSHIP We created a 3 floor building. The top floor being the mezzanine STORE and a cafe on the ground floor, leading to a theatre in the basement.

The work placement took place in Malta for 2 months for JDS Furniture. Designing kitchens and bedrooms to meet clients needs with a range of veneered or solid wood materials. Creating promotional material and taking part in their furniture fair.

Initial Magazine Layouts

Concept Flyers & Development

Drawings 1 and 2 were the initial designs for the kitchen and bedroom showroom, including material colours and measurements through visuals.

1

2

The drawn designs 3 and 4 were developed for clients after the fair, adapting to their kitchen layout and what other alterations they requested.

4

3

SHOWROOM This is the final result of the chosen designs. This was

developed and manufactured successfully for the event.

English Leather Craft is a specialised leathergoods production company, to provide branded and luxury goods for retail clients. The task was to create a range of homewares, for the company to gain their own unique identity.

Luxury backgammon board & set.

Silver embossed leather coasters.

Initial Company Research

Gathered primary research when visiting the Walsall leather museum. Secondary research inspired by luxury, yet simple items.

LAMP 4

1

The cross stitch inspired the initial concept and structure.

2

5

The shape was inspired by natural forms. Using brass wire for an alternate test of hanging the shape.

Development of the organic form was experimented out, including the positioning of the dowels.

The result created a ‘peeling’ effect, which lead to combining this concept and sitiching.

Experimenting with a different type of leather, brass splitters and forms.

6

3

Experimentation lead to using dowel for the lampshade to maintain its structure.

Experimenting with different techniques, styles and an array of leathers, the initial concept developed further with intricate stitching details and media used.

7

The adaptation combined previous aspects of experiments. Incorporating the dowel just on the sides.

A lamp structure formed to represent an industrial take on a hanging flower or leaves.

GIFT PACKAGING

4

1

The initial concepts were inspired by leather magazine racks to create a hanging effect to hold the alcohol.

2

5

8

Further development lead to allowing the bottles to be held by leather straps on each end.

The additional slits in the table are intended to hold wine glasses.

6

3

This concept is a side table, consisting of the wine rack in the centre.

The inital concept was a wine rack, incorporating simple and geometric shapes. Development lead to gift packaging for an array of gin bottles.

Development lead to a standard wine rack holder, incorporating intentions of using dowel and stitching.

Through experimentation of stitching and etching, the simple design became gift packaging for gins.

7

The change of size and shape allowed the concept to be held onto a wall or for gift packaging, involving stitching.

The result lead to using simple shapes and allowing the bottle labels to be seen, with a geometric design.

CLOCK

Stitching Details

The concepts incorporated stitching, therefore experimented with a range of techniques. This is stitched using a sewing machine.

The roman numerals suit the rustic colour and stitching Although they need to be clearer.

Decorative hand stitching, influence by automotive leather stitching.

Zigzag and baseball stitching techniques.

Two types of cross-stitching. Closer together and with spaces.

Roman Numerals

Developed an array of face etches and found the roman numerals suited the design concept.

The Hands

The hand designs are to ensure they match the rest of the design and theme.

The design intention was to create a functional and aesthetically unique clock. Incorporating hand stitching and a range in coloured leathers. It developed from a table clock to a wall feature.

The simple wood design suits the colours, but not the concept itself.

Experimented with different textures, colours and thicknesses of leather for etching to see what does and doesn’t work.

The clear plastic represents glass, incorporating matching cross stitching with the clock face.

The initial numbers ranged in types of designs, depending on the clock style.

The wrapped thread represents holding the hands together, as if it is broken glass.

FINAL WALL CLOCK DESIGN

Details

Cross stitched Feature Hand cross stitched pieces back together.

The Hands Inspired by hand sewing needles. Material options either nickel or brass.

Nylon Thread Used for roman numerals and cross stitched feature.

Option B Brass hands

Option A Nickel hands

Roman Numerals Hand stitched roman numerals.

Main Body Colour The ‘rustic’ coloured leather would be used for the main body of the clock.
