ICE BREAKER THIS SEMESTER’S THEME “ARCHITECTURE IS A SCULPTURAL BIOGRAPHY” The purpose of this ICE BREAKER assignment is to set everyone’s mindset to delve into this semester’s theme: “ ARCHITECTURE IS A SCULPYURAL BIOGRAPHY”. Additionally, it is a way for me to assess where we all are at this starting point. BY: Jerry W. Lum

Qualities that I want to express: Curious, Creative, Passionate, ENTHUSIASTIC, Liberal, and Unpredictable

QUESTION:

Can you build without design? For my first iteration, I tired to visualize how the wave look like in my mind, and I tired to build just using what I think it was. I do think that we can build without design, but the final result wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be the one that you wanted to be.

}  THIS IS MY FIRST ITERATION #1

ITERATION. IT IS INSPIRED BY THE OCEAN (WAVE).

STRENGTHS: I tried to bend two pieces of copper to show the movement of the wave. I tried to make it more dynamic.

WEAKNESSES: It is too simple, it doesn’t really show the movement of the wave, and there was a base.

ITERATION #2

IMPROVEMENTS FROM #1 I tried to use two different kinds of wire (florist wire and copper wire) to create the movement of the wave. STRENGTHS: I did some research on ocean waves and I found out that: Waves are formed by wind. So, I created the movement of the wind on both sides. I discover that by using wire I could easily create the curving shape. WEAKNESSES: The wire in the center is too dense. It doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t show the movement of the wave successfully, and there still had a base .

ITERATION #3

IMPROVEMENTS FROM #2 I changed the material by using wood instead of wire. STRENGTHS: I am using wood strips to form the curve by putting them all into one point (the center point). And I tried to increase their height slowly one by one. WEAKNESSES: It is too simple because it is not dense and it is not dynamic enough. There is a base. You can look at one direction only because of the limited base.

STRENGTHS: I used two different sizes of squares to build this model. I tried to use the space to create order. I tried to make the model look complex by angling the squares. WHY THE MODEL CREATES COMPLEXITY? IT is because I put different squares at different angles.

ITERATION #4

MAJOR OBJECTIVE: ENTHUSIASTIC

STRENGTHS: I tried to make the model looks like the picture that I picked on p.7 (ENTHUSIASTIC). I tried to bend the woods to form the curves. I played with the proportion by using 2:4 in this model. It is dynamic.

ITERATION #5

WEAKNESSES: It is too simple, not enthusiastic enough and not dynamic enough. The woods is really hard to bend in order to form the curve.

ITERATION #6

IMPROVEMENTS FROM #5: I keep the proportion 2:4 but make it more obvious this time. I changed to use different kind of woods because the previous one is way too hard to bend. STRENGTHS: I tried put the tracing paper on the two small triangle in order to create a plane. By bending the woods I made this model very dynamic.

I filed successful after building this model and I really wanted to go into the next levels in Jerry class.

Putting the model UNDER THE SUNSHINE

IMPROVEMENTS FROM #6 I tried to create a bigger space on the top of this model. Instead of stopping at the same point, in this model I tried to stop at different positions but on the same wood. STRENGTHS: By using three big triangles, I successfully create a bigger space on the top. I tried to keep the proportion 2:4:6 in this model, instead of applying to the whole model. I tired to extend to center wood (the hierarchical) to make this model look like supporting by the hierarchical only.

ITERATION #7

WEAKNESSES: After charting with my group mates, they told me that comparing with my previous one, this one is not showing my major objective enough because I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t put an other triangles on the bottom.

ITERATION #8 PLAYING WITH THE CENTER POINT IMPROVEMENTS FROM #7 I create two parts this time, once on the top And once on the bottom. This model look more ENTHUSIASTIC comparing with my previous one. (by Josh) I created a pattern in the triangle. STRENGTHS: In this model I am trying to play with the center point. I tried to create a pattern in the triangle, the pattern is from larger to smaller or either smaller to larger. There is a repetitions in this model. WEAKNESSESS: By using the method of center point, it made the model less dynamic.

FRAMING IMPROVEMENTS FROM #8: In this model I tried to extend the center point into two, one is on the top section and the second one is on the bottom section. I am trying to creating two separate spaces. Make it more dynamic. STRENGTHS: I created two different parts or spaces by using the same shape (triangles). I tired to create a repetition at the bottom by forming triangle. There is a hierarchy in the center of this model. By bending the woods, it made the model more complexity. WEAKNESSES: It wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t balance.

ITERATION #9

ITERATION #10

IMPROVEMENT FROM #9 Successfully made this model balance. Instead of building two separate spaces I create one big space in the center of the model and I am trying to create space within a space. Combining all design elements that I had been using in all my previous models. E.g. Proportion, curving, spatial, patternâ&#x20AC;Ś STRENGTHS: The woods on the top, I tried to put them all together to line on the center point. In this model each ends attach with each others. After building this model, I noticed that how important is building with design. You can make it very accurate of what you want to build.

ITERATION #11 SECTIONING

SECTIONING #1 This model is inspired by my classmate MYO, after we talk about how I can use all of my previous model patterns to create a sectioning model. We concluded I should use triangle to build this model, because mostly I am using triangle to build my models. STRENGTHS: This is the first model we are play with sectioning. I tried to create a space by using the same pattern. They all lined up well and going upward slowly with the equal distance. They are curving from right to left. WEAKNESSES: This is not really sectioning (by Prof Jerry)

ITERATION #12 SECTIONING #2 STRENGTHS: I am using paper to form the shape. I am using repetition to made this model. This model look pretty interesting to me. WEAKNESSES: It wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really doing sectioning either.

ITERATION #13 SECTIONING #3 STRENGTHS: I am trying to create three different zones by using circles. Each circles are getting smaller and smeller. I used plastic folder to crate the transparency. WEAKNESSES: It is not big enough. Could have more levels. It is very hard to cut the circle out by using plastic folder. After charting with the group mate, they suggest me to make the next model bigger, and try to make one of the circle stand out

ITERATION #14 SECTIONING #4

This is my last project before mid-term. STRENGTHS: Instead of using plastic folder, I used â&#x20AC;Ś.. to build this model. It is much more easy to cut and the model look Better. I listened to what my group mate suggest me, I made three circles differently and made one of it more out standing comparing with the others. WEAKNESSES: It is not bigger enough ( I could make one much more out standing than now).

REFLECTION AND LEARNING OUTCOME From the first iteration to the last iteration, when I look it back now, I do think I have made big step forward on how to design and think as a architecture. By looking back all of my iteration, I discovered what is my personal style on design. In class, when we chart with others classmate, we can noticed that what are the disadvantages of our new design and how can we improve on our new iteration. By learning from each others, it makes our model ever better. Learning form others classmate perspectives, we noticed what we needed to change in order to make our new iteration become a beauty. What I needed to improve in this class? I needed to work on my presentational skills on how can I fully express what I wanted to say. AND The time management of making models.
