PREFACE The Jackson State University Fact Book is an annual publication of the Office of Institutional Research and Planning. This document is an update of factual information which is designed to assist administrators, faculty, staff and other University constituents with statistical references about the institution. It assembles under one cover comparable information across a five year period. The data collected and reported in the Fact Book is the official data for the University. As with any statistical data, these contained in the Fact Book are a snapshot of a single point in time. Every effort has been made to include within this publication the data most often requested. General Information

THE UNIVERSITY Jackson State University, a coeducational institution, is supported by the State of Mississippi. It is controlled by the Board of Trustees of Institutions of Higher Learning, appointed by the governor. The University is supported by legislative appropriations supplemented by student fees and federal and private grants. Jackson State University is located in Jackson, Mississippi, the capital and largest city of the state. Jackson is the geographic, political, industrial and cultural center of the state. The metropolitan area consists of a growing population presently estimated at 425,000. The location of the University in the densely populated section of central Mississippi is such that nearly one-half of the students come from within a fifty-mile radius of the institution; however, the population includes students from every county in the state. A significant number of students also come from outside the state and from foreign countries. The campus is a scenic one hundred and fifty-acre tract situated one mile west of the main business district of the city and is easily accessible from U.S. Highways 80, 49, and 51, and Interstates 20 and 55. A modern airport with direct connections to major cities--north, south, east, and west – is about fifteen minutes away.

UNIVERSITY PURPOSE STATEMENT/ MISSION STATEMENT Jackson State University is a historically black, coeducational, research intensive, public institution of higher learning that has been designated by the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning as the urban institution of Mississippi. The University functions as a community of learners in which teaching, research, and service are central to its total learning environment. The University maintains a commitment to serve effectively students from diverse academic, social, economic, ethnic and geographic backgrounds. The University also utilizes its human, cultural, and physical resources to enhance the surrounding metropolitan community. It further develops responsible leaders who are capable and willing to seek solutions to human, social and technological problems, with special emphasis on those relevant to the metropolitan and urban areas of the state, the nation and the world. Expected Educational Results The University seeks to ensure that it is responsive to the clientele it serves by producing graduates who are capable of performing responsibly, competently, and effectively in their chosen careers. Jackson State University expects its graduates to become active leaders and participants in the activities of the local community, their home community, and the world, through actions such as volunteerism, consultancies, civic and political appointments, and elections. Through numerous degree programs ranging from the baccalaureate to the doctoral levels, students are nurtured in an environment that supports JSU 2008-09 Fact Book - 7

research, exploration, and discovery in the learning process. The students acquire a general education and are trained to become well-rounded professionals in a variety of disciplines through the University's academic schools and colleges. Further, Jackson State University provides continuing educational opportunities, especially to non-traditional students. Training for all students is facilitated through research laboratories, traditional and innovative classroom instruction, distance learning instruction, technologically advanced libraries, and through internships and alliances with external agencies and organizations. Additionally, institutes, centers and specialized educational and research services contribute to the experiential growth of students and faculty. The knowledge, experiences, skills, and qualities acquired by graduates of Jackson State University include the following: U The ability to communicate effectively, through both oral and written expression. U The ability to demonstrate competence and creativity in a discipline for the purpose of obtaining and maintaining rewarding employment, and/or engaging in entrepreneurial activities. U The ability to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate ideas and data using logic and quantitative reasoning. U A familiarity with, and the ability to effectively use current and appropriate technology. U A social consciousness which will enable one to think critically and responsibly about moral, social, economic, health, cultural, technological, and political issues, and to contribute to the improvement of society. U A knowledge and recognition of the value of both one's own ethnic and cultural heritage and of the similarities and differences inherent in a multicultural society. ACCREDITATIONS Jackson State University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097; Telephone number 404-679-4501) to award the bachelor's, master's, education specialist, Doctor of Education, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.
