will stick with things sans organ meat and tripe). Great food, great prices, super takeout. Oh, and lots of kitschy stuff hanging from the walls that makes me think of the ‘80s.

Mississippi Museum of Art’s The Palette Café (380 S. Lamar St., 601.960.1515, msmuseumart.org) I spend a lot of time in meetings for everything from community work to civic projects to nonprofit efforts. I am often downtown, and I love to drop by the museum and catch a tasty bite with Nick Wallace, Jackson’s most unique chef. Reared in his grandmother’s kitchen in Edwards, Miss., Nick learned to love food straight from the ground. I love Nick’s pickles. And most everything else. Oh, and Nick was born in the ‘80s.

Avondale Street to Wooddale Drive to Crane Boulevard to Nassau Street to Greenwich Street to Cambridge Drive. Work. Live. Play. Prosper.

That’s the route of my nightly walk with my two dogs, Mia, a Westie, and Abbie (of Lord knows what Community Animal Rescue and Adoption mix, but precious!). We three walk these streets around 10 or 11 p.m. every night. Like watchmen, we make the rounds. I enjoy the solitude and quiet, and I often listen to podcasts such as “This American Life” or “Snap Judgment.” I do not, however, listen to ‘80s music, which is weird, but I prefer the spoken word when walking. Maybe I should see a shrink about that.

8.

La Brioche (2906 N. State St., 601.988.2299, labriochems.com)

Newcomers Alejandra Sprouts and Cristina Lazzari of La Brioche are putting out the finest examples of Viennese and high-end pastries in our market, hands down. I respect them and love what they have carved out in Fondren.

9.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center (2500 N. State St., 601.984.1000)

This is going to sound weird, but I really like this place! I have been fortunate enough to be involved in a series of projects that have taken me into “the bowels of the beast,” and I have found that UMMC is an amazing organization chock full of smart, caring people who work daily to make our lives better. Six or seven years ago, my primary doctor moved from his private practice group to the UMMC physicians, and I had my first experience in the hospital. It was incredibly efficient. I think that I will live well past my 80s, thanks to the work going on at the corner of State Street and Woodrow Wilson Drive.

10.

Lou’s Full-Serv (904 E. Fortification St., 601.487.6359, lousfullserv.com)

Louis LaRose, Jesse Houston, Alex Eaton, Gary Hawkins and Matthew Kajdan are the young bucks of the Jackson culinary scene, and they are killing it. Fresh, amazing, incredible. You go, boys! Make old men like Dan Blumenthal and me look bad, like we are cooking in the ‘80s. We know you want to. 73
