Football stadium concept South Dakota State University Architect’s rendering (subject to change) June 2013

In concert with the goals of the University’s recently completed strategic plan, Impact 2018, South Dakota State University Athletics has developed a new fiveyear strategic plan. This plan was also influenced by an environment punctuated by possible changes in the structure of NCAA Division I, ongoing realignment of Division I conferences and a growing need for Athletics generated revenues. Also, SDSU completed reclassification only six years ago from NCAA Division II to the more resource intensive and nationally competitive Division I level. Responding to these challenges, the 2012-13 academic year may have been the best in SDSU Athletics’ history. Competitively, Football advanced to the second round of the Division I FCS playoffs, and for the second consecutive year, both

Men’s and Women’s Basketball qualified for the Division I National Tournament. Also, Baseball made its first ever Division I post-season appearance. Buoyed by this success, and to accommodate enhancements to all 21 sports, Athletics’ budget has increased $4 million over the last four years. Accordingly, the number of donors, corporate sponsors and ticket sales has dramatically escalated over that same period. This energy is also exemplified in the classroom where over 65% of SDSU’s 480 student-athletes attained a 3.0 or higher grade point average in 2012-13. Jackrabbit student-athletes continue to reap conference and national acclaim for academic achievement. Another result of the recent momentum is a renewed

emphasis on completing essential competition and practice facilities. Projects such as the Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex , a new Football stadium and a renovation of Frost Arena, will give student-athletes, coaches and Jackrabbit fans much-needed modern services while capitalizing on revenue opportunities.

Ten years ago, South Dakota State University Athletics began its transition to Division I. Over the past decade, we have established ourselves on a national level in every facet of Intercollegiate Athletics. Dedicated student-athletes and coaches, a passionate fan base, and major supporters all shared a vision that SDSU could compete with the biggest names in college athletics. We have built a strong foundation to promote success. The last five years have been some of the most successful in the history of SDSU Athletics on many fronts: numerous conference championships and postseason berths, continued high graduation rates and academic honors, record numbers in ticket sales and budget growth, and an unprecedented period of facility improvement and expansion. There is much to be proud of, but we can never assume that we have reached a peak of excellence or become complacent in our achievements. College athletics is constantly changing and we must remain proactive and flexible enough to respond to those changes. Our ambitions are great and we have a bold vision for the future of Jackrabbit Athletics. In support of that vision, we are excited to introduce our strategic plan, The Jackrabbit Way. This plan, is aligned with the goals of the University’s strategic plan, Impact 2018 and provides the direction to build on our accomplishments while inspiring generations of Jackrabbits to dream big and pave the way for long-term success.

Strategic Planning Process

The Jackrabbit Way, builds on the achievement of the previous strategic plan that was introduced in 2004 as part of its NCAA Division I reclassification requirements. University administrators, along with Athletics staff, coaches and student-athletes participated in the planning. The examination of SDSU and NCAA materials, as well as documents from Division I conferences and institutions, was also vital to this process. Similar to Impact 2018, Athletics’ strategic plan requires innovation, prioritization of resources and determination. Accordingly, The Jackrabbit Way features Core Values, as well as Mission and Vision Statements that complement Impact 2018 along with a dynamic Division I environment. Critical goals, strategies, due dates and metrics are organized within seven Success Factors. Ongoing review and assessment procedures will gauge goal achievement, as well as the prioritization of resources.
