grace BEYOND more than we ask or imagine

Calvary Church

Dear Church Family, For nearly 90 years, God has established Calvary Church as a refuge within our city. We desire to be Christ’s Church in this place, where wounded hearts are cared for, and where people receive God’s abundant grace and mercy at critical points in their lives. Our facilities are the hub of this ministry, the place where God works to bring about transformation: transformation that begins here, but literally extends around the world. After much prayer, our church body has affirmed that now is the time to direct our attention to our physical facility, in order to meet our current and future needs as we seek to live out the mission to which God has called us. Grace Beyond is an ambitious plan. The decisions we make today will have an impact on lives for eternity as people experience God’s life-altering grace. At its heart, this is what Grace Beyond is about — how God has shown His grace to us and how He wants to show it through us even more in the years to come. It will require the sacrificial commitment of all of us to bring this plan to life. Please prayerfully consider how God wants you to participate financially in Grace Beyond so that we can see Him do immeasurably more for our community, our nation and our world. Now to him who is able to do IMMEASURABLY MORE than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, TO HIM BE GLORY in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. EPHESIANS 3:20-21

Grace Beyond is not one, but eight different projects in eight different areas of our facility. Our goal is to address current challenges in our facility that make it difficult for people to experience the true heart of our ministry. Each project will address constraints within our facility in order to provide exciting new spaces for ministry.

While God’s grace is incredibly evident in our ministry, I’ve noticed that new families often look overwhelmed as they try to find classrooms and maneuver through crowded halls. In addition, security can be a challenge due to the number of doors leading outside. It is exciting to consider how children and their families could experience God’s love and grace in greater ways when we are able to address these challenges. - Lynda Freeman Children’s Ministry Team Leader

Gathering together for corporate worship is the most important thing we do as a church. It is in this assembly that God’s presence is felt most intimately. We want to enhance our Sanctuary so that everyone can have the fullest worship experience.

The goal of Calvary Kids is to guide children to trust and follow Christ for the rest of their lives. One way that we as a church family will show God’s love to our children is to designate a secure, nurturing space designed especially for their unique needs.

By removing the balcony we will eliminate many of our existing audio and visual concerns. The Sanctuary update will also add additional seats and make the space more accessible to people with special needs or mobility issues.

Grace Beyond centralizes Calvary Kids in a new addition built out to the northeast from our current Sanctuary on the lower level. There will be two main entry points, creating a secure destination for parents and kids.

One of our main goals at Calvary is to see every believer engaged in authentic Christian community. Our current facility makes it difficult for people to connect with one another. Creating designated space for fellowship signifies that we believe in relationships centered around our shared faith. Centrally located on the main floor will be a community gathering place — a welcoming, comfortable space that fosters community building and interaction. During the week this area will also function as a gathering place for many of our ministry programs.

God is at work in the lives of our students. Grace Beyond will re-purpose our current Gym to serve as designated space for middle and high school students to worship and build community with their peers. Moving the Student Ministries area to the main level also allows greater opportunities for intergenerational interaction that helps youth develop lasting bonds with the church body as a whole.

Our Prayer Garden is a tangible representation of our belief that prayer is essential to our lives as God’s people. It also reflects our commitment to spend time in relationship with our Creator both individually and corporately. This prayer garden will be a place of refuge and refreshment.

Currently, many of the staff offices are small and located away from their departments. This leads to wasted time, inefficiency and poor communications. Grace Beyond will provide some new offices, helping to centralize many of our operations.

In order to address our internal traffic issues we will create a wide corridor outside the Sanctuary that will guide people through the building. In addition

to adding a corridor around the Sanctuary, this will add multiple entry and exit points to the building which will greatly improve the flow between services. This will also help to eliminate distractions we currently experience in our worship services.

On any given Sunday, despite the best efforts of our parking lot volunteers, arriving and leaving Calvary is challenging due to the poor configuration of the parking lot. An improved parking lot will be welcoming to visitors and will help our church family as they enter and leave our facility. In addition to reconfiguring our traffic flow, Grace Beyond would also involve adding parking spots, resurfacing the parking lot, adding landscaping and constructing a new storage/equipment building.

Being a part of UNITED has had a great impact on my life through the community of other high school believers and the strong biblical teaching. - Jessica Webb, High School Senior

In 2011, we were led to give an extravagant offering throughout Holy Week, in worship of God. In time, God made it very clear to the Elders that this money should be used to build a prayer garden. Through this building project we hope to create a space that increases our intimacy with God and encourages our church to imitate Christ and His emphasis on prayer. It is exciting to finally be able to build this sacred space. - Warren DeHaan Prayer Garden Committee

The space constraints of our current Children’s Ministry area make it difficult to reach families who need true, godly friends to come alongside them in the joys and struggles of parenting. Investing in our children allows us to better minister to their parents as well, and that’s exciting for our ministry. We see Sunday mornings as a great opportunity for those who are new to Calvary to experience the blessing of community with less intimidation. Grace Beyond will enable us to provide space that we just don’t have right now for mingling and enjoying the company of fellow believers. We’ll also have additional space for mid-size groups to meet, allowing for more freedom and flexibility as visitors get to know people at Calvary.

How to Determine How Much You Should Give Paul wrote to the Corinthian believers that “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7). Here are five steps to help you decide how much you should give to the Grace Beyond Building Project.

1. Pray. “If any of you lacks wisdom, he

should ask God” (James 1:5). Sacrificial giving is a spiritual decision. Ask God to stretch your faith so that you can excel in the grace of giving (2 Corinthians 8:7). As you pray, God will give you peace about how much he wants you to give.

2. Don’t rush your decision. Spend

time listening to God’s still, small voice in your heart. Ask God to reveal to you how much he wants you to give and how he wants you to give.

3. Have a family conference. Be

sure to involve your children, no matter how young they are. This is a great opportunity to teach generosity and faith.

Proverbs 11:24-25; Luke 6:38; 2 Corinthians 8:1-12; 2 Corinthians 9:6-12; and Matthew 6:19-20.

4. Ask yourself these questions. Ť How can we decrease our expenses in order to make a larger commitment? Ť Are there any expenditures that we could delay? Ť What amount would stretch our faith?

5. Dedicate your gift. When you

have determined what God would have you give as a family, pray a prayer of commitment similar to this: “Father, everything we have comes from you. Teach us to be cheerful givers and trust you to meet our needs. Thank you for the indescribable gift of eternal life that your Son provided for us on the cross. We pray that you would take our gift and use it to reach more people with the grace of Jesus Christ. Thank you for what you are doing through Calvary Church. In Jesus’ name, Amen!”

We believe the body of Christ is truly inclusive and whole when God’s people assemble, mature, serve, care and witness together. Grace Beyond will allow more opportunities for adults with special needs to worship throughout the Sanctuary, enabling our worship services to more fully represent God’s people assembled in this place. This project will also allow those with special needs to have greater inclusion within Children’s Ministry. Not only will we be better integrated in ministry programming, we will also share check-in processes and experience the greater security of being located within the new Calvary Kids area. - Judi Warner Director, Special Needs Ministry

Ways to Give Our primary motivation for generous giving is to advance the cause of Christ, but a wise steward also takes advantage of the tax benefits associated with charitable contributions. As you consider your Grace Beyond commitment, here are some giving options you might consider.

The simplest and easiest gift is cash. Your gift can be made through cash, personal checks, or cashier’s checks. You can also give your project commitment through an automatic transfer from your checking or savings account.

Gifts of appreciated securities, stocks, and bonds provide considerable tax advantages when transferred to Calvary Church before they are sold. If you have held your securities for more than one year, your gift may provide a twofold tax benefit, creating an income-tax deduction as well as avoiding the capitalgains tax that would have been due on their sale. You also may give mutual funds, non-marketable stock, or closely held stock.

These “Ways to Give” ideas are not legal or tax advice. Please seek the advice of competent professionals before implementing any of these suggestions.

Giving personal residences, second homes, income property, and vacant land offers a wide variety of tax and other benefits. You may deduct the full fair market value of the property without having to pay capital gains on the appreciation, providing you have held the property for more than one year.

Rare books, works of art, valuable collectibles, and tangible items of demonstrable value may offer you an opportunity to make a significant gift.

Pledge Sunday MARCH 29, 2015

We are rejoicing in the great things God is accomplishing at Calvary Church and are excited about the expanded ministries this new building will bring. We ask that the funds you dedicate to this project be over and above your weekly giving so that we can continue to fully fund Calvary’s ongoing ministries, maintain our global missions focus, and avoid debt. On our March 29 Pledge Sunday, we are asking each member of our church family to come prepared to make a commitment for the next 36 months to our Grace Beyond Building Project. This bold vision requires a bold response from each one of us. Please pray that God will truly extend His grace through us in ways that are beyond what we can ask for or imagine.
