FabLab Guide

The history of FabLabs

The concept of FabLab emerged from MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms. The goal was to provide access to the tools, knowledge and the financial means to educate, innovate and invent using technology and digital fabrication to allow anyone to make (almost) anything, and thereby create opportunities to improve lives and livelihoods around the world. The Fab Foundation was formed in 2009 to facilitate and support the growth of the international FabLab network. Sherry Lassiter (Fab Foundation Director) observed that the number of FabLabs has been doubling every year and a half, similar to Moore’s Law. This is now called the ‘Lass’ Law’ (Gershenfeld et al. 2017: 18). U S E F U L L I N KS
