Sierrasil SierraSil launches 2-year research deal with Food Science Lab at UBC. SierraSil has been committed to ongoing research in an effort to back up all health claims with quality, clinical research. The body of research completed to date is far beyond the norm in the Natural Health Product industry, and this still continues. We are thrilled to announce the next phase of research to be completed at our local University – the University of British Columbia, over the next 24 months! The next phase of research will include mechanism of action research to: better understand the bio-accessibility of the minerals; better understand how SierraSil passes through the digestive system; how it interacts with other medications and supplements; and some preliminary research on how SierraSil affects inflammation of the digestive tract. It is known that SierraSil can inhibit joint inflammation; there is no current information, however, on its effectiveness to inhibit intestinal inflammation. We have a number of customers who have reported better digestion and relief from IBS and Chrohn’s symptoms and we look forward to learning more about this through what’s known as an “in vitro inflamed intestinal cell model” to investigate the effectiveness. As of today the evidence remains anecdotal, but with this research we hope that in the future SierraSil will become a product for digestive health and have further applications than just joint health.

The bio-accessibility and drug interaction component of the research is to further understand the pharmacokinetics of SierraSil. We know through previous research that SierraSil is absolutely safe for long term use and this research will further add to that. We currently advise customers to take SierraSil away from medication because of the detoxifying properties of SierraSil, and with an abundance of caution we advise that four hours should be allowed both before and after taking SierraSil. The research will help clarify if the four-hour window is necessary and will help us to better understand the chelating effect of the mineral. The method used is known as Caco-2 monolayer to investigate the effects of SierraSil on the bioavailability of drugs and Natural Health Products.

Top 5 Probiotic Myths - Busted! Probiotics are live micro-organisms that beneficially affect the host by improving its intestinal microbial balance. Key features of probiotic bacteria include its ability to survive gastric and bile acids, and to outcompete pathogens in the gut, preventing them from attaching to the intestinal surfaces. Most other companies selling probiotics present attributes not based on science, but rather simply aim to create unsubstantiated product differentiation. The following are the most common myths found in the probiotic industry, which our team at ProViotic are trying to dispel: Myth 1: Probiotics consist of only good bacteria. Probiotics are grown in solutions that usually contain milk, soy, or gluten from barley; as in most cases, the probiotic bacteria require proteins in order to grow. Even after filtering, the final powder still contains a significant percentage of the dried fermenting solution including these major allergen traces(1). Furthermore, most probiotic companies add additional ingredients to extend the shelf life of probiotics such as silicates, magnesium stearates, and other artificial chemicals. What made you get into the industry?

I had an opportunity to start doing demo’s for Nordic Naturals, and combined with my own personal passion to heal myself and my family through natural medicine, I found it greatly rewarding to help teach others how to do the same.

What do you feel have been the main challenges on the road? Weather, this winter especially has brought many schedule changes with it.

What excites you most about the industry?

Knowing that the products that I help get into stores can help people to live healthier and happier lives.

Do you feel e-commerce has affected our industry or your position as a sales rep?

E-commerce has greatly affected our industry and will continue to do so, with millennials only growing in number each year. I have found it more important than ever to work with companies that respect and police MAP polices. Along with MAP polices being followed I have found it is also key to support our retailers by offering in-store promotions, customer events, and free samples to increase traffic and build loyalty, educate store associates beyond what the customers can find online, and last, being able to offer a wide selection of sustainable products (e.g. organic, non-GMO, fair-trade).

What are your hobbies?

It would be a shame to live in the bUTAHful state of Utah and not love to hike and explore all the beauty we are surrounded by.
