EARLY LIFE

When Meredith was young, her father, Thatcher, would bring her to Seattle Grace Hospital to visit her mother, Ellis, at work. Meredith’s parents had a troubled marriage, though part of this was due to Ellis spending too much time working and normal everyday problems. But a large part was due to the fact that for years, Ellis had been involved in an

affair with one of her colleagues and best friends, Richard Webber. Their marital issues proved too great, and eventually, Thatcher left the home when Meredith was five years old. Shortly after Richard breaking things off in attempt to be a better man, Ellis accepted a fellowship opportunity at Massachusetts General Hospital. She relocated to Massachusetts with Meredith, and Thatcher lost all contact with his daughter. Meredith went to college at Dartmouth, following her graduation, she spent two months travelling with Sadie Harris. However, during that time, her mother was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease. After graduating from medical school, Meredith moved back to Seattle from Boston and into her childhood home in order to begin her internship at Seattle Grace.

INTERNSHIP

After having a one-night stand with Derek Shepherd the day before her internship. She soon came to discover that he was, in fact her boss. However, soon she and Derek began dating, initially discreetly. But soon Bailey, Meredith’s resident, caught her and Derek together and made it her mission to make Meredith’s life at work as miserable as possible,

as she was involved with her boss, who was also Bailey’s boss. Meredith soon learned that Derek was still married when his wife, Addison, came to Seattle to get Derek back. At first, Meredith was angry with Derek for not telling her, but she later admitted to still loving him and begged him to “pick me, choose me, love me.” When Addison handed him the divorce papers to end their relationship officially, Derek remained hesitant and soon after decided to stay with Addison, much to Meredith’s dismay. Although the two constantly flirted and Derek still hinted at having feelings for her, they both agreed to remain friends. Until the night of the Seattle Grace Hospital Prom where Derek went with Addison and Meredith with Finn (McVet). The two met in an exam room where Derek confessed he still loved her and they got together. However, soon , Addison discovered Meredith’s underwear in Derek’s pocket and the two finally agreed to divorce. Meredith, however, was still dating Finn and issued a contest between the two boys to see which she would settle with. She ultimately chose Derek and they reconciled. Throughout her internship, she faced many hardships such

The doctors all tried to revive her, but she flatlined. Eventually, Meredith recovered, but Derek remained concerned that Meredith was a good swimmer, and that maybe she had just given up.

PROPOSAL AND MARRIAGE

After a lot of ups and downs through the seasons, with Derek hitting an engagement ring with a baseball bat at one point, Derek finally proposed to Meredith. However, she only said yes the second time, when Derek decorated the elevator with brain scans from their past cases.

Instead of going ahead with their wedding, Meredith instead decided to give it to Alex and Izzie. Therefore, they ended up getting married on a post-it note.

THE HOSPITAL SHOOTING

Near the end of their third year of residency, Meredith revealed to Cristina that she was pregnant. She also planned on telling Derek, but the mass shooting intervened. The husband of a deceased patient, Gary Clark, entered the hospital and shot many people including Derek while Meredith watched from afar. Cristina had to do his surgery herself after barring Meredith from the OR. When the shooter entered the OR, Meredith entered too and told him to shoot her. However, he ended up shooting Owen, though his injuries were comparatively minor. While tending to Owen’s injury, Meredith suffered a miscarriage.

THE TRIAL AND ZOLA

Meredith and Derek met Zola when she was brought to the hospital for a spina bifida operation as part of Alex’s program. Derek immediately bonded with Zola and suggested adoption. Meredith took a little longer to bond with Zola, but eventually, she was unable to avoid falling in love with

the child. However, Derek found out that Meredith had tampered with his Alzheimer’s trial just as the couple was granted temporary custody of Zola. Fearing that she would lose Zola, Meredith hid with Zola in the basement of the hospital for 4 hours. Zola was taken away from them for a time, during which Meredith and Derek rekindled their relationship. Eventually the adoption was finalized.

THE PLANE CRASH

At the end of her residency, Meredith, along with Derek, Mark, Lexie, Cristina, and Arizona, was involved in a plane crash on the way to Boise to help in a conjoined twins case. Lexie died due to a part of the plane crushing her, and Meredith was horrified and mourned. The plane crash also led to Mark’s death, Arizona’s loss of her leg, and Derek’s severely damaged nerves in his hand. All the survivors of the plane crash filed a lawsuit against the plane company. The doctors went to trial and were awarded $15 million each. Callie decided that their win should be celebrated, where Meredith revealed that she was pregnant.

THE STORM

9 months later, while the doctors were getting the hospital ready for an incoming storm, Meredith’s water broke! However, they were soon informed that Meredith would have to have a C-Section without any light because of the storm. It went well, however, Heather and Shane discovered she had internal bleeding. In the end, Bailey overcame her fear to operate and Meredith pulled through.

DEREK AND DC

Despite his promise to Meredith to take care of the kids so that she could have a year to focus on her work, Derek started to consult on a time-consuming brain mapping project for the White House. When he was offered the job, he got into a fight with Meredith about his priorities, however, he still ended up going. After a couple of weeks of Derek in D.C., he came home to Meredith and said that he thought D.C. was everything, but he was wrong. Derek told

I don’t ever want to”

However, whilst he had been on the way to the airport for a final trip to D.C. where he would hand in his resignation, he got into a car crash. Ultimately, he was declared brain dead, and Meredith had his ventilators turned off. She then ran off to San Diego for one year to mourn and give birth to Ellis, her and Derek’s child.

RETURN

Upon returning, Meredith struggled to settle especially with the presence of Amelia. However, she soon got more used to it, and began to kindle a romance with Nathan Riggs. However, his past-lover, Megan Hunt returned, breaking off their relationship. However, Meredith’s surgery on Megan earned her a Catherine Fox Award. With the introduction of the new doctor, Atticus Lincoln, love was potentially back on the tables for Meredith. However after many backs and forths in the love triangle surrounding Meredith, Deluca and Link, Meredith chose Deluca. Making him the first man she said ‘I love you’ to since Derek. He even went to prison to cover for her putting her daughter’s name on the paperwork for a young girl in need. Regardless of Deluca’s efforts, Meredith still went to prison and had to do community service. During her trial, Alex had managed to get previous patients of hers to come back and testify in her favour. In the end, the case was dropped.

owned a shop when he was younger, and one day two robbers approached him and demanded that he give up the watch his wife Carolyn had saved tirelessly to buy for him. When he refused, the robbers shot him to death, with Derek and his younger sister Amelia bearing witness to his death while hiding in the back of the store. This event forms a large part of Derek’s moral compass and consequently may have inspired him to become a surgeon to help save lives

LEAVING NEW YORK

After Addison cheated on him with Mark, Derek left his private practice in New York and accepted Richard Webber’s offer to come work for him at Seattle Grace Hospital with the possibility of becoming the Chief once Webber retired. Derek became aware that Burke was in the running too after he was hired. However, after Richard began getting treatment for his alcoholism, Derek was promoted to Chief.

THE SHOOTING

In the mass shooting at the hospital, Derek was shot in the chest by Gary Clark who had been targeting him. Cristina was forced to perform heart surgery on Derek and he survived. However, Derek was profoundly impacted by the event and coped with it by speeding. He was arrested multiple times, which led to Meredith leaving him in jail overnight. He quit his job as Chief of Surgery, having intended to do so for

some time as he realized he preferred to be in the O.R. instead of doing administrative work.

ALZHEIMER’S TRIAL

Influenced by Meredith’s Mother, Derek decided to try and find a way to cure Alzheimer’s. When Adele (Richard’s Wife) got put into the trial because of her rapidly progressing disease, Meredith switched the envelopes to make sure Adele got the active agent and not the placebo and in doing so she tainted the trial, resulting in Derek being blacklisted by the FDA.

This meant he moved away to Washington DC. After some trouble in his relationship with Meredith, he finally returned, proffessing his love for her and how he couldn’t live without her. However, not long after his return home, Derek was on his way to the airport for one last trip to D.C and was involved in a car accident. Cristina’s biological father died when she was nine years old in a car accident; Cristina watched her father bleed out before help arrived, attempting to close his chest with her hands, to try to stop the bleeding. Cristina felt his last heart beat in her hands. She claims this is the reason she became a doctor, and could very likely be the motive behind her interest in Cardiothoracic Surgery.

“Oh screw beautiful, I’m brilliant, if you want to appease me, compliment my brain”

EPTOPIC PREGNANCY

During her internship, Cristina ended up pregnant with Burke’s baby. She had scheduled an abortion, however, she collapsed during surgery. One of her Fallopian tubes had burst and she was bleeding out into the uterus. They couldn’t save the baby.

MARRYING BURKE

On the day of the wedding, Burke’s mother shaved off Cristina’s eyebrows and gave her a necklace that was worn by five generations of Burke women on their wedding days. When she arrived at the chapel, Cristina realized that when she’d scrubbed in for surgery, she’d washed off the vows written on her hand and started to panic. Meredith calmed her down and convinced her to walk down the aisle, but before she could Burke came out and said he was sorry for trying to force her to be the woman he wanted and left. Meredith then went to the front of the room and told everyone they could go home.

HOSPITAL SHOOTING

During the shooting, after Derek was shot in the chest and the shooter walked away, Meredith and Cristina jumped into action. With the help of April Kepner, they got him down to the ER. There they found Jackson Avery who had a few scrub nurses and an anesthesiologist. Cristina realized that the bullet was

DANCE IT OUT next to the aortic valve thus complicating the procedure all the more. To worsen things, Mr Clark held Cristina and everyone at gunpoint demanding they stop and let Derek die. To defuse the situation Jackson pulled out the wires connecting Derek to the heart rate monitor making it look like Derek flatlined. Appeased the shooter left the room and Cristina starting working again. She successfully saved Derek’s life, but the incident traumatized her so completely that for months afterward Cristina practically refused to operate.

After a difficult struggle with PTSD, she relocated to the Mayo Clinic, Cristina had some difficulties fitting in. She was tasked to “babysit” Dr. Thomas, a very old surgeon with boring stories. She constantly FaceTimed with Meredith when not operating, and made plans to fly to Seattle when Mark would be taken off life support. She had tried to fly to Seattle previously, but couldn’t do it since she still was haunted by the crash. Over time at the Mayo Clinic, she grew much closer to Dr Thomas. He taught her and complimented her, saying she would be the surgeon of her generation. He told her people would try to diminish her, but they would fail. Suddenly, while operating, Craig froze and fell down suffering a fatal heart attack.

After working with Addison Forbes Montgomery for a stint, Alex began to move away from plastics, and more towards work with children.

REBBECCA POPE

Because of her new face and because she couldn’t remember her real name, Alex nicknamed her Ava. Later on, Rebecca returned and they had a brief relationship where Ava revealed the truth to Alex. Before she came back to Seattle, Ava had developed a borderline personality disorder. A part of this disorder was that she had forgotten that she already had a baby. Alex proceeded with his plans, first charging his credit cards and then giving “I owe you” promises until the children were set to arrive. Frantic and crumbling under the pressure of owing so much money and living up to the expectations he had set up for these kids, he almost had a meltdown. However, a cheque came in the mail just in time from the lawyer handling the estate of Gladys Pulcher, giving Alex two hundred thousand dollars and essentially funding the project.

ASSULT AND SUSPENSION

When surgical intern Andrew DeLuca was helping Jo get into bed after a night of drinking, however, Alex thought he was sexually assaulting her. He then violently physically assaulted Andrew, who sustained several critical injuries. When Andrew decided to press charges, Alex and his attorney thought it was for a misdemeanor, but quickly learned that the state had upped the charge to felony assault. However, just before Alex could take the plea which would have resulted in him serving two years, Andrew dropped the charges. Andrew says that he did it to protect Jo from her abusive ex.

During her internship at Seattle Grace Hospital, she was very quiet and had no confidence, until she was mentored by Richard Webber.

THE NAZI

Bailey was introduced to the interns as “The Nazi” in the first season premiere because of her tough personality and blunt attitude. Off the bat she tells her interns to “not bother sucking up cause I already hate you and that’s not going

“Rule number one: Don’t bother sucking up. I already hate you, that’s not gonna change”

to change”; however, Miranda’s more motherly and protective side is exhibited, as she is shown to care about not only her patients, but also her colleagues. She is protective of her interns, as shown when she warns Derek to stay away from Meredith. Miranda stayed beside Cristina’s side as she recovers from surgery. It is later revealed that she had been married to her husband Tucker Jones for ten years and that she is pregnant. Her son was born during a bomb scare at Seattle Grace while her husband is being treated in surgery for injuries from a car crash. George O’Malley helped her through labor, and she thanked him by naming her son William George Bailey Jones.

“When I move. You move.” CHANGE OF SPECIALTY

After watching the residents fight after the chance to do a solo surgery, Bailey realized that she has become somewhat bored with General Surgery and may need a change of specialty. She became drawn to Pediatric surgery after working closely with Arizona Robbins. Chief Webber was unhappy with Bailey’s decision to leave General Surgery, and discouraged her at every opportunity, giving her an uninspiring letter of recommendation and purchasing a surgical robot to lure her back to General Surgery. Ultimately, Bailey decided to continue to pursue her career in General Surgery because she had a fight with her husband who said that if she accepted a position as a Peds fellow, he would divorce her. She decides to go through with the divorce and states there will be no time to start a new specialty as a single-mom.

THE SHOOTING

When a gunman enters the hospital, believing that the staff had failed his wife, Bailey was with resident Charles Percy. The gunman shot Percy, and Bailey was unable to save him because she couldn’t get him to an OR. She grew close with a patient, Mary Portman, when she fought to save Charles’ life. Distraught by these experiences, Bailey took time off to visit her parents with her son. On her return, she broke up with Ben. Mary Portman then returned for her surgery, which appeared to go well, but she didn’t wake up. They couldn’t discover what caused her death. So, Miranda starts on a quest to cure fistulas.

BAILEY’S OCD

Three of Bailey’s patients returned with postoperative infections. It was initially believed to be the fault of Leah Murphy, who was ill but assisted on Bailey’s surgeries. However, following the arrival of the third patient, whose surgery Dr. Murphy had not assisted on, it was apparent that the problem was more serious and the CDC was alerted. Following the investigation, it was deduced that Dr. Bailey was contaminated with MRSA, an aggressive infection which resulted in the deaths of all three patients. Dr. Bailey became reclusive and refused to operate, testing herself repeatedly for MRSA, developing signs of OCD. She was prescribed medicine from a therapist which proved to be effective, and she was cleared

When a storm hit the hospital, there were technical problems, so Webber went in the electrical room and found the man who was in charge of the generators lying on the ground. He sent him to an OR and stayed in the room to restore the power but is electrocuted.

“We’re all going to die. We don’t get much say over how or when, but we do get to decide how we’re gonna live. So, do it. Decide. Is this the life you want to live? Is this the person you want to love? Is this the best you can be? Breathe in. Breathe out and decide.” Richard slowly recovered from his electrical injuries after putting Meredith as his POA. Richard returned to work and was given a retirement package from Hunt on his birthday. Richard accepted to become the head of the residency program mentoring the residents. He continued his relationship with Catherine and plans to propose.

MAGGIE

It was revealed through moments of flashbacks from Meredith that Maggie is in fact Richard’s daughter, and that Ellis gave her up out of shame and suffering from depression. Upon finding out the truth Richard didn’t tell Maggie the news straight away out of fear Maggie would reject and blame him for giving her up. This caused Richard to act strangely around her. After the truth is revealed Maggie was angry with Richard and ignored and rebuffed him for some time. Later on, the pair are seen to have bonded and are now friends, with Richard and Meredith sharing stories with Maggie about Ellis.

A HARD DAY’S NIGHT ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ was the pilot episode of Grey’s Anatomy, first airing on March 27th, 2005. The episode introduces the original class of interns, Meredith Grey, Cristina Yang, Izzie Stevens, Alex Karev and George O’Malley. The first episode chronicles the first 48-hour shift for the new surgical interns.

BAILEY’S FIVE RULES

“I have five rules. Memorize them. Rule number one: Don’t bother sucking up. I already hate you. That’s not gonna change. Trauma protocol, phone list, pagers. Nurses will page you, you answer every page at a run. A run! That’s rule number two! Your first shift starts now and lasts 48 hours. You’re interns, grunts, nobodies, bottom of the surgical food chain. You run labs, write orders, work every second night until you drop, and don’t complain! On-call rooms. Attendings hog them. Sleep when you can where you can, which brings me to rule number three. If I’m sleeping, don’t wake me unless your patient is actually dying. Rule number four: The dying patient better not be dead when I get there. Not only will you have killed someone, you would have woke me for no good reason. We clear?”

After winning a Harper Avery, he founded the Klausman Institute for Medical Research, and ran it until he gave it to Cristina.

GETTING SHOT

When he was at Mercy West fighting for a heart for Denny, he rushed to the hospital to help Denny right away. Then he got shot in the shoulder before entering the hospital. The wound caused damage to the nerves in his arm. He took a long time recovering, but he eventually regained use of his arm and hand and he was able to operate again.

THE WEDDING

Preston was in the mood for a traditional, spirited wedding, which rose conflict with Cristina. In the end, they agreed to have a spirited wedding, but only a small one. After the wedding, Burke was nowhere to be found. When Cristina asked Derek about him, he told her Burke had handed in a letter of resignation two weeks ago.

Thatcher Grey (Ex-Husband) † Meredith Grey Maggie Pierce

Ellis Grey was the mother of Meredith Grey and the ex-wife of Thatcher Grey. She was also the birth mother of Maggie Pierce. During her time, she was a world-famous surgeon who was twice honored with the Harper Avery Award. She was later diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

AFFAIR WITH RICHARD

She was often looked down on because she was one of the few and first female surgeons. Due to her large professional drive and her wanting to prove herself, she worked long hours and didn’t spend much time with her family. She bonded with her fellow resident Richard, who was also being looked down on because of his skin color. They soon started off an affair and began planning a life together. In June 1983, the two of them made a deal to tell their spouses about their affair and leave them. But after Ellis was shortlisted for a Harper Avery, Richard chose to stay with his wife, Adele, because he was hopelessly jealous.

SUICIDE ATTEMPT

Devastated over the fact that Richard left her, Ellis slit her wrists in front of Meredith. Ellis told Meredith not to be scared of the blood and forbade her to call 911. Eventually, Ellis passed out, and Meredith called 911. She was transported to the ER and her life was saved, thanks to Meredith. Eventually, Meredith learned that Ellis, being the fantastic surgeon that she was, would have known that the way she slit her wrists would not have killed her, making clear to her that it was not a suicide attempt, but rather a cry for Richard’s attention.

A couple of hundred years ago, Benjamin Franklin shared with the world the secret of his success. “Never leave that till tomorrow,” he said, “Which you can do today.” This is the man who discovered electricity. You’d think more of us would listen to what he had to say. I don’t know why we put things off, but if I had to guess, I’d say it has a lot to do with fear. Fear of failure. Fear of pain. Fear of rejection. Sometimes the fear is just of making a decision, because what if you’re wrong? What if you make a mistake you can’t undo? Whatever it is we’re afraid of, one thing holds true: that by the time the pain of not doing the thing gets worse than the fear of doing it, it can feel like we’re carrying around a giant tumor. And you thought I was speaking metaphorically. The early bird catches the worm; a stitch in time saves nine. He who hesitates is lost. We can’t pretend we haven’t been told. We’ve all heard the proverbs, heard the philosophers, heard our grandparents warning us about wasted time, heard the damn poets urging us to ‘seize the day’. Still sometimes we have to see for ourselves. We have to make our own mistakes. We have to learn our own lessons. We have to sweep today’s possibility under tomorrow’s rug until we can’t anymore, until we finally understand for ourselves what Benjamin Franklin meant. That knowing is better than wondering, that waking is better than sleeping. And that even the biggest failure, even the worst most intractable mistake beats the hell out of never trying

CHARACTERS

OLIVIA JANKOVIC NURSE Olivia was a nurse at Seattle Grace until she was fired prior to the merger with Mercy West. Olivia had a casual relationship with Alex Karev where she contracted syphilis, henceforth, passing it onto George O’Malley. Additionally, Olivia was one of the nurses who went on strike. When George was reluctant to cross the picket line, Olivia came and said that he could cross and they wouldn’t throw donuts. Because of his parents’ union ties, he refused and ultimately ended up joining the picket line. Olivia, Tyler, and Debbie then asked George to cross the line and go in to check on their patients. Olivia also returned in season 14, when her son, Milo, swallowed a chew toy, which became stuck in his bronchus.

TYLER CHRISTIAN NURSE Tyler Christian is a nurse at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital and has worked there for more than six years, even while it was still Seattle Grace Hospital. Tyler has made friends with many of the hospital’s surgeons while they were still interns, particularly Meredith Grey, Cristina Yang, and Lexie Grey. Cristina paid him to guard the door while she stripped for Burke in a hospital room but he had to leave because a patient was coding and Burke’s parents entered the room. Tyler later blackmailed Cristina into giving him an electrical appliance by lying to Burke’s mother, Jane Burke, and telling her that Cristina was in surgery.

WHO’S ZOOMIN WHO? “Secrets can’t hide in science. Medicine has a way of exposing the lies. Within the walls of the hospital, the truth is stripped bare. How we keep our secrets outside the hospital – well, that’s a little different. One thing is certain, whatever it is we’re trying to hide; we’re never ready for that moment when the truth gets naked. That’s the problem with secrets – like misery, they love company. They pile up and up until they take over everything, until you don’t have room for anything else, until you’re so full of secrets you feel like you’re going to burst. The thing people forget is how good it can feel when you finally set secrets free. Whether good or bad, at least they’re out in the open, like it or not. And once your secrets are out in the open, you don’t have to hide behind them anymore. The problem with secrets is even when you think you’re in control, you’re not.”

She is married to Jake Reilly and mother to Henry Montgomery.

MARRIAGE TO DEREK

Addison cheated on her husband of over 10 years, Derek with his best friend Mark Sloan. Before this, Addison and Derek’s marriage had been an unhappy one, as Derek had been putting in little effort. Derek even mentioned that the demise

RELOCATING TO LA

of their marriage was not her fault alone. They each owned their respective practices, putting a strain on their marriage. When he found Mark and Addison in bed together, he simply walked away. Derek then picked up his life in New York, sold his private practice, and relocated to Seattle. This is where he began his legendary relationship with Meredith Grey. Upon Richard’s request to help out with a patient, Addison visited Seattle. When she arrived at the hospital, she noticed her husband, Derek talking to Meredith. She walked over and while he saw her doing so, Derek apologized to Meredith for what was to come. Addison then introduced herself as Derek’s wife, about whom Meredith knew nothing. Later, Addison moved into Derek’s trailer, and the two tried to reconcile. Addison asked Derek if they were even after she got poison oak from walking Meredith’s dog in the woods. The two laughed over the incident. They divorced after Addison found a pair of women’s underwear in Derek’s pocket.

Addison had very little in Seattle after she and Derek divorced. Her marriage with Derek was over, her relationship with Mark had completely vanished, and her attempt at a relationship with Alex Karev failed. She visited Los Angeles to see her friends Naomi and Sam Bennett, also because Naomi was a fertility specialist. Naomi offered her a position at Oceanside

“I’m starting to think that love might mean wanting the other person to be happy even if that means they can’t stay with you” Wellness Group. Addison returned to Los Angeles not long after that, taking Oceanside Wellness up on their job offer at their practice. One day, Addison searched through Naomi’s files at the practice to read her file and found that her chances of becoming pregnant were worse than she’d previously imagined. She learned that her egg count was a mere two, and was heartbroken.

ADOPTING HENRY

Mere hours after delivering a baby at St. Ambrose Hospital, Addison got a call from her social worker saying that a birth mom had chosen her. She returned to the hospital, shocked to find that it was Judi, the same woman whose baby she had delivered. Judi had decided she couldn’t find a better mom for the baby, and that it must have been fate since Addison was the one who delivered the baby boy. Addison named him Henry Montgomery.
