How to Become a Pediatric Nurse

Pediatric nurses are member of the health care team who manages and implements care to a variety of pediatric patients from ages 0 to 18 years old. However, critical or serious conditions that involve the neonates, infants and children are being handled by nurses in the Neonatal ICU (NICU) and the Pediatric ICU (PICU), respectively. Basically, every hospital has its own pediatric ward where all the pediatric patients are being catered. There are also pediatric nurses in the emergency room, though most of them are really found in the ward. Moving on, a pediatric nurse is also responsible in giving primary care which includes doing developmental screening tests, assisting the doctor in routine examinations, giving of childhood immunizations, and health teachings on how to avoid the common childhood illnesses such as chickenpox, coughs and colds, mumps, dengue fever (for tropical countries), and so on; as well as in giving basic knowledge in food, hygiene and nutrition. Once you have your license as a nurse, your next step if you want to specialize in pediatric nursing is for you to pass the exam administered by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB) so that you will become a Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN). Furthermore, it doesn’t mean that when you are already a certified pediatric nurse, you will also lie in the comfort of your desired job.
