Youth Program at Educational Forum Proposal

The aim of this document is to propose a youth component at the Educational Forum that will take place in Chicago, IL on the weekend of March 21, 2007. Description of the Program The youth program at the Educational Forum will be run by ISNA Youth Programming and Services Department and in full collaboration with the Educational Forum Program Committee. Proposed Program Components: 1. Youth Leadership Development Educators attending the Educational Forum will be asked to nominate 2-4 students from their schools to bring them to the Educational Forum. While teachers and principals are attending their training , these youth will attend a parallel leadership training . Training topics will include the following: How to develop vision and action plan for a community service project, time management, volunteers recruitment, how to setup our priorities and other topics that a youth activist will need to lead youth activities in their schools and communities. Youth-Educators Panel Discussion Our Schools in Their Eyes: An open discussion between educators and youth on how the youth perceive their Islamic schools and their role in these institutions. The discussion can also be about what the youth can bring to schools. 3. Educators Sessions Topics can include: a. Their Culture: A discussion about youth culture and the different factors that affect youth development b. Beyond Islamic Schools: In this session we will discuss ways to help the youth who attend Islamic schools have a smooth transition to the public school system or universities. c. Tarbiyah vs. Education, are they the same? If not, then which one are we doing?

4. Youth Professionals Sessions Topics can include: a. How to start a consistent after-school program b. Camp counselors training

The Educational Forum Youth Program Committee The committee that will develop the content of this proposal, and it will include experts in the areas of education and youth development.

Process and Timeline 1. Committee established and members confirmed- By January 15, 2007 2. Conference call to review the proposal, including the process and make final changes- By January 18 3. Subcommittees are formalized. Each will focus on one of the following areas: Youth Leadership, Youth Educators Panel Discussion, Educators Sessions - By January 18 4. Subcommittees will develop programs outline and present it to the rest of the committee, including trainers/presenters names- By February 7 5. Marketing campaign will be launched- By February 7 6. Presenters will submit detailed description of the content of their training to the committee- by February 28 7. Final program is printed and copied- by March 7
