The King Lud pub is set to re-open after former leaseholders called time in October.

The pub posted on Facebook: “The King Lud is re-opening very soon watch this space Luddites see you there.”

The new tenants are being kept secret for now but former members of staff are working with them to return the pub to the community hub it once was.

One former member of the management team said they were “very happy” to be back at the Ryde Esplanade institution and couldn’t wait to open the doors once again and greet members of the community with a warm smile and a quality beverage.

Ten teen attack Police are investigating a report of a 39-year-old man being assaulted in Cowes, leaving the victim with a broken nose.

Were you in Cowes early on Sunday (October 28)?

The man and his wife were walking in the Birmingham Road area at some point between 01.15am and 01.40am on Sunday (British Summer Time before the clocks went back).

They were involved in a verbal dispute with a group of up to 10 teenage boys and the man was subsequently

assaulted.

He was treated for a broken nose, cuts, and bruises. He is now recovering at home.

Police are keen to hear from anyone who saw what happened or who saw the group of teenagers in the area.

Wayne’s tribute to hero Trevor

Trevor Moyce, Wayne Child and firefighters pose for a photo in 2010 after his recovery.

A father has paid tribute to firefighter Trevor Moyce who saved his life after he blacked out at the wheel and his car flew off a bridge.

Trevor spent 30 years in the fire service, working his way up to Newport Fire Station manager.

He sadly passed away after a long battle with Motor Neurone Disease on Tuesday (November 13).

Tributes have been pouring in from across the Island,

including from Wayne Child, whose life was saved

by Trevor after a serious accident in January, 2010.

He’d been to Florida, hadn’t slept on the flight home, and was extremely tired when his Toyota MR2 left the bridge on Smallbrook Lane. The next thing he remembers is waking up in Southampton General Hospital.

A tree had smashed through his windscreen causing serious injuries to his face

and head, with paramedics believing he would lose his right arm at the shoulder.

“He literally saved my life,” said Wayne, business manager at Barclays in Newport.

“Trevor was the first person on the scene, I believe he was driving back to the fire station after his lunch hour. He was first to find and stabilise me until the ambulance got there.

“As much as all the

surgeons and doctors did a fantastic job of rebuilding my head, my arm and putting me back together, if it hadn’t been for him, I wouldn’t be here.”

The 37-year-old was gutted to here the news of Trevor’s passing and admits he couldn’t believe it at first.

“I knew he was ill and had Motor Neurone Disease which is incredibly sad and incredibly debilitating.

“But I didn’t fully

understand how serious it is and how quickly it can take you away. I was incredibly saddened by it,” said Wayne who now has metal plates in his head.

Wayne reminisced visiting the fire crew at Ryde Fire Station after his recovery, spending the afternoon with Trevor and the crew to say thank you and show his appreciation.

He added: “I think they appreciated the fact I made

the effort to go over there and thank them all personally.

“But it was especially for Trevor, he was first there and did the right thing and it was because of him that I am still here.

“Words are not enough to convey how I feel. If it hadn’t been for him there would have been nothing [left of me] to rebuild and I owe him my life.”

Wayne sends his love and sympathy to Trevor’s family.

News in brief ‘People power’ forces council re-think Ryde Town Councillor Karen Lucioni has expressed her delight that “people power” has forced Isle of Wight Council to have a re-think over introducing car parking charges to the town’s Union Street and Cross Street.

Karen organised the petition, which has now reached the 2,500 signatures required to force the Council to discuss the issue further at their next full council meeting.

She said: “I am extremely pleased that the ‘people’s petition’ against parking charges for our town has had so much support. I visited every shop in Cross Street and Union Street myself to inform all that the fight to protect our high street continues. I have submitted the petition to the Isle of Wight council for debate at November’s full council.

“I am glad to see that our petition has promoted the need for the council administration to open dialogue with our business association.

Our side streets are overloaded as it is, I feel a more sensible approach needs to be looked at, not just more charges put in place. I believe in people power, their voice counts Ryde!”

Cameron’s cash goals

A 6-year-old boy has launched a bid to become a platinum badge fundraiser for Mountbatten Hospice.

Cameron needs to raise £3,630 to reach his noble goal.

Poppy collection plundered in Ryde “I cannot believe that someone would stoop so low,” is one reaction to the callous theft of money from a poppy appeal collection pot.

All Saints Church in Ryde had its poppy appeal money stolen just hours after the centenary of the exact moment the guns fell silent at the end of the First World War. The stolen Royal British Legion donations are intended for those who fought for our country and their families who receive support from the charity.

Charlotte Atkinson, a RBL volunteer took to Facebook to vent her frustration and disgust at this low act.

She said: “I just want to say to the person who felt that their needs were greater than the needs of the countries armed forces veterans and their families who receive from the Royal British Legion support through the money raised by the Poppy appeal.

“I hope that with whatever money was in the Poppy collecting pot that you stole from All Saints Church at Ryde your needs have been dealt with.

“That money would have

gone towards supporting men and women who put their life on the line without question and are going through issues you couldn’t even dream of in your worst nightmares...so that parasites like you can walk around our communities thieving whatever they like.

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said: “We are appealing for anyone who saw what happened when a charity collection was stolen from All Saints Church on Queen’s Road in Ryde, to contact us.

“We received a report yesterday that between 2pm on Wednesday 7 November and 5pm on Sunday 11 November a collection tin for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal was taken from a table at the rear of the church near the main door.”

Cross-Solent cancer travel could be cut A council funded scheme that gives free cross-Solent travel to NHS patients with specific illnesses is being reviewed and Islanders can give their views on its future.

The Cross Solent Travel Scheme is a discretionary, non-means tested measure providing financial support to NHS patients travelling to the mainland to receive specific treatments for chemotherapy, radiotherapy or renal dialysis.

The scheme is owned and administered by the Isle of Wight NHS Trust but since 2006, when the NHS ceased its funding, the council has supported residents by picking up the annual cost.

“No other council in the country provides nonmeans tested funding to transport NHS patients and

so in the light of the savings this council needs to make we must look at whether we can continue to fund it,” said Councillor Clare Mosdell, cabinet member for adult social care and public health.

“The scheme is currently allocated £60,000 per year.

“We have no legal duty to fund it and in challenging times, we feel we should look at protecting the frontline services we are legally obliged to fund such as adult social care or mental health services.

“However, it’s really important to us that we listen to the views of Islanders to inform any decisions about the future funding of this scheme.”

Where people have low income or are in receipt of specific qualifying benefits, the NHS has a statutory duty

The council could save £60,000 a year if the service is cut. to reimburse their travel costs under the Healthcare Travel Cost Scheme (HTCS).

This NHS funded scheme remains in place.

In 2005, the NHS made a decision to withdraw the

discretionary scheme that reimbursed people who were not eligible to claim for their travel costs under the HTCS. The restricted nature of the scheme means that many people with other conditions

do not receive assistance.

Vandal sets the benchmark Graffiti has appeared on benches in Newport calling out the Isle of Wight Council to clean them using business rate payer money.

The graffiti addresses the council directly, stating: “To I.O.W. Council - seats are disgusting. Scrape, sand and clean. Use rates money!!!

Now.” Whoever is behind the daubings appears to have sanded panels on the benches down to be able to write the message.

One bench simply states: “Clean me now.”

The benches are located in St Thomas Square between Oggies chip shop and the Newport Minster.

Will Ogiliev, manager of Oggies said the benches are “absolutely filthy” and should be cleaned by the council.

“I'm surprised anyone sits on them to be honest, they look like they've been there for 100 years. And it's hardly any graffiti really,” he added.

A spokesman for Island Roads said: “Next year Island Roads will be carrying out a major programme to improve amenity benches across the Island and those in St Thomas Square will be part of this.

“In the meantime, we will also shortly be cleaning all eight benches in the square.

“The graffiti on these benches has already been removed by Island Roads.

Not only does graffiti look unsightly, it is an offence to deface IW Council property.

One of the UK’s biggest stationery retailers could soon be leaving the Isle of Wight if the signs in the windows are to be believed.

“Closing down” and “everything must go” signs have been put up in the windows of the store in Newport.

Staff have not been told if the store is closing or if it’s just an advertising stunt.

Formerly known as Staples, Office Outlet asked landlords in August for a three year rent holiday in a bid to restructure and keep the business going due to soaring running costs and weak sales performance.

Office Outlet have been asked for confirmation on the future of the Newport store.

Danial drubs airport petition as it would cost ‘billions’

Danial Subhani flew to London to visit his favourite curry house after speaking with the IW Observer.

A petition has been launched calling for the development of an airport for commercial use on the Isle of Wight that could provide a real alternative to ferry travel.

The idea has already been dismissed by one airport owner as unviable as it would cost “billions”.

But petitioner Thomas Munro, 39, hasn’t been put off as he has dreamed of being the man who brought commercial air travel to the Island for years.

He grew up in Cowes, lives in London and wonders why people can fly between Jersey and major cities like London, Liverpool and Dublin for around £60 return but cannot do the same from the Isle of Wight.

He believes Bembridge’s existing airport would be the ideal place to develop his dream hub, serviced by low-

cost carriers FlyBe, Logan Air and possibly larger airlines such as Ryanair and Easy Jet. He said: “An airport would bring jobs in construction first, then I’d imagine hotels would want to be near it, restaurants, car hire places, shops, and investment.

“This would give Islanders another option to get off the Island as well, when the ferries aren’t running. “The visitor figures for Jersey Airport last year were 1.6 million, and they don’t even have many events.

“Imagine what we could pull in for things like the Isle of Wight Festival or Cowes Week where people come from all over the country and the world.

“People say ‘it’s pie in the sky, it won’t happen, it’s been tried before and it failed’. Well the only reason it failed before is because

our airports haven’t been developed!”

The owner of Sandown Airport, Danial Subhani, rubbished the petition and the idea of developing a “proper” airport.

He said: “There’s around 130,000 people on the Isle of Wight, if all of them went on holiday once a year it wouldn’t pay for the airport to be built.

“We are talkings billions.

To take in the likes of Easy Jet and Ryan Air, we are talking big money. [For FlyBe] it would be the same, the regulations are massive.

“They’d never get it passed planning. They did a viability study of extending Sandown’s runway in 2012, and that was scrapped as joke.

“There used to be a guy before me who did commercial flights in light

aircraft between Sandown and London City, that failed miserably as well due to costs.”

Mr Subhani is considering an air taxi service whereby people can charter a light aircraft to destinations like Manchester for around £200 each.

“A proper commercial airport on the Isle of Wight will never be viable,” continued Mr Subhani. “It just doesn’t cost in, do the simple maths. The runway alone to take something like that could be £10 million or £20 million. And where would it go? Bembridge and Sandown aren’t long enough.”

Time is running out to save the PS Ryde vessel.

Last ditch attempt for D-Day steamer An Isle of Wight paddle steamer that was used in the D-Day landings could be saved if a last ditch fundraising effort is successful.

Restoration enthusiast Lisa Turner has launched the fundraising appeal to rebuild the PS Ryde but is worried time is running out.

National Historic Ships UK appraised and confirmed the vessel could be salvaged, but

Lisa needs to raise £5,000 to move forward with the project.

She posted on the Friends of PS Ryde Facebook page on Tuesday: “Sadly, time is nearly up. Funding has stalled at £2,300 so we are short by a long way.

“We are short, sadly due to promises from people which sadly have not come true. We appreciate everyone who has donated, we couldn’t have

asked any more of you.

“This is the final call for funds.

“It would only take a small amount from every follower on this group to achieve the goal.

“If everyone here can donate £5 to £10 we can get this done.”

If she raises the initial £5,000, it could cost between £7 million and £10 million to restore the vessel.

The vessel has a fascinating history as it has been used as a passenger ferry, a wartime anti-aircraft ship used in the D-Day landings, and was finally the Ryde Queen floating nightclub.

Cuthbert Hingert was married to Patricia for 63 years.

Clinical decisions ‘may not have been sound’ as husband dies in hospital St Mary’s hospital must take action to prevent future deaths after a coroner ruled a man died in their care after several fatal errors.

A report published on October 30 written by senior coroner Caroline Sumeray of the Isle of Wight revealed that Cuthbert Hingert, an Island man, died after a series of failings at the Newport hospital.

The 86-year-old man passed away on March 5 last year when he sustained a head injury after he was given incorrect medicines.

The coroner found at inquest that an on duty medical registrar did not check the medicines database to see that he had already been administered a stat (immediate) dose

of antiplatelets and anticoagulant medication before prescribing a second dose of these medications.

Then the registrar prescribed a dose of aspirin that was four times the amount of a standard dose.

Mr Hingert had already been prescribed continuing doses of Fondaparinux and Ticagrelor, which, in the coroner’s view were fortuitously not administered.

The inquest also revealed that one clinician treating Mr Hingert had not been trained to use the medicines database.

There was also a two hour delay in communicating a medication decision for the patient.

Mr Hingert then became

confused but was prescribed a hypnotic drug, zopiclone which the coroner said “may not have been a sound clinical decision”.

The coroner’s final concern was that a nurse did not follow hospital protocol and make a DATIX incident report - which are there to help prevent future incidents of the same kind from happening again.

Suzanne Rostron, director of quality governance at Isle of Wight NHS Trust said: “I want to extend our sympathies to the relatives and friends of Mr Cuthbert Hingert.

“Cuthbert died on March 5, 2017 and we have fully reviewed his care leading up to that point.

Parking plans brought to businesses Councillors will meet with local business representatives to discuss the proposed new parking charges in Newport and Ryde.

Council leader Councillor Dave Stewart and other cabinet members want the views of the business associations in both towns about the budget plans.

Cllr Wayne Whittle, cabinet member for regeneration and business development, was among those to raise issues about the parking proposals at last Thursday’s

Cabinet meeting.

Councillor Stewart said: “We understand that changes to parking charges are a big issue and that’s why we’re meeting with our business community to discuss the potential impact and alternative ideas.

“We’ve been very clear about having to save £5.5 million next year and we published our proposals very early to give people every chance to comment.”

Introducing additional parking charges in Newport and Ryde, as well as charging

for parking on Island seafronts all year round would raise a yearly income of around £149,000 for the council.

Any adjustments to the parking proposals would require making up the funding shortfall elsewhere in the budget.

The council is exploring all potential opportunities, including alternative sources of income, to help balance the books.

The meetings with the business associations will take place later this month.

‘Fight not over’ as cabinet axe LACs

The LAC service was axed after a heated scrutiny committee debate at County H The Isle of Wight Council cabinet voted unanimously to axe the Local Area Coordinators service on Thursday night (November 8).

The decision comes in the wake of heated debates and controversy over the fate of the service that is there to ensure those in need do not need further help from stretched adult social care services.

Around 50 members of the public attended the cabinet

meeting at the Westridge Centre in Ryde with 15 people asking questions of council leader Councillor Dave Stewart.

Members of the public walked out when the decision was made to cut the service out after pleading with councillors not to.

The £400,000 a year that the service costs will now be put into drug, alcohol and sexual health services according to Cllr Clare Mosdell, cabinet member for

She said after the cabinet meeting: “The fight is not completely over.

“I believe that the effects of the withdrawal of this service will have a devastating effect on our communities.

island residents have all of the support and care that they need to lead happy and fulfilled lives by challenging the administration.

“Finances are clearly the driving force behind decision making at the expense of addressing residents’ needs.” Community builders will now be put into Ryde and Freshwater where the LAC service was most used.

An expansion of the council’s Living Well scheme will replace the LAC service.

IW WASPI stride on with Seely

Bob Seely met with women campaigning againsts changes to State Pensions in Newport.

Isle of Wight Women campaigning against the loss of their state pensions met with Island MP Bob Seely at their rally in Newport on Saturday (November 10).

The IW Women Against State Pension Injustice (IW WASPI) say large numbers of women around the country are struggling following the government’s acceleration of the State Pension Age by the 1995 and 2011 Acts for women born in the 1950s.

Around 11,000 women are likely affected on the Island and 3.6 million nationally.

The State Pension changes affect all women born in the 1950s and campaigners are seeking “fair transitional arrangements” for all, meaning changes made in

smaller steps.

Many women received little or no notification of the changes and some women could be forced to wait up to six years to draw a pension.

IW WASPI campaigner Di Hollander has been affected by the changes and explained what they mean for women’s lives, like her own.

She said: “I’m fortunate to have a good and loyal group of older friends - but they’re away all the time. I hardly see them anymore...I’ve been completely isolated, through no fault of my own or anyone else’s.“The wider impact means I cannot help my children as much as I would like to, they’re struggling.

I’d like to look after my grandchildren to help get them on the property ladder,

I can’t do that. I have to go on working until 2022. My mother has had to go into a care home.

“I have been told I’ll get another job and ageism doesn’t exist - we all know that is utter rubbish.

“All we are asking for is fairness and recognition that this shouldn’t have been implemented. There are already women who have had to sell their homes and who are living on foodbanks.

It’s not right.”

MP Bob Seely joined the IW WASPI rally, buying coffee for the campaigners.

He said he would be supporting their cause and would be getting in touch with MP Tim Loughton who spearheads the WASPI campaign in parliament.

“East Cowes Councillor Karl Love also stopped by at the rally, he said: “A significant number of Island women are affected by the introduction of new State Pension rules. They will lose significant amounts of money because of the lack of transitional arrangements implemented by this government. Some women born in the 1950s will lose as much as £46,000.”

Speaking to IW Observer at the rally, Mr Seely said: “To be honest, it was probably when I was new and I wasn’t aware of the issue. I don’t change my mind overnight and I don’t find out about things overnight so it takes time.

“When I was actually engaged positively [by the WASPI women], rather than just criticised, I sat down and talked to them, understood what the position was, and I actually realised there was a bit of an injustice here.

“It clearly effects a lot of women, and a lot of women on the Island. It effects a lot of people nationally. I think it’s unfair. If there is a meaningful vote in the House of Commons I will support the WASPIs.”

Child sex offence notices issued on the Island

By Joe Burn Controversial notices issued to potential child sex offenders have been issued on the Isle of Wight.

Hampshire Constabulary have handed out four “disruption notices” or C5 notices since 2016 on the Island.

It is a new tactic used when police do not believe they have sufficient evidence to prosecute, but it has prompted a national and local backlash.

A Freedom of Information request was used to obtain confirmation that the

Councillor Dave Stewart studies a C5 notice. notices had been handed out on the Island, the force previously said it could not provide information that was location specific.

Hampshire Constabulary said this is not a cost cutting measure and is backed up by a leading criminologist and a child sex abuse prevention charity.

Former head of the Island’s CID and council leader Dave Stewart said he believed the notices would have been handed out on the Island before this information was revealed.

Lynn Hammond, spokesperson for IW Parents Action Group, which seeks to end child abuse, said: “What if these men are innocent?

You could be targeting innocent men. They should be going to court, the evidence should be found.

“I think where child sex offences are concerned police have to make time.”

And Police and Crime Commissioner Vera Baird, the national lead for child sexual abuse cases – and a former barrister – said she was worried the scheme

“won’t protect a soul”.

She added: “I don’t know of anything like this [C5 leaflet] at all. There is nothing like the prospect of a conviction with this.

“Cuts in the budget and a vastly increased demand on policing are likely to have played a part in its use.”

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said: “On October 6, 2016, Hampshire Constabulary introduced a new process for changing potential perpetrator behaviour in CSE [Child Sexual Exploitation]

cases which do not result a person being charged.

“Working with a leading criminologist Dr Graham Hill and the Lucy Faithfull Foundation, a disruption notice known as C5 Notice has been developed.

“The appropriately named C5 Notice focuses on five areas of concerning behaviour: communication, conduct, control, consent and consequences.

“The notice makes clear the law around sexual offending and what types of behaviour and acts are unacceptable.”

Chair of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police and Crime Panel, Cllr Stewart, said: “It always used to be said that there is abuse on the Island and I think there probably is.

“While I am not aware personally of it, we have had serious child sex abuse cases on the Island in years gone by and if the Hampshire Constabulary have a policy where they issue these notices where evidence has fallen short, then anything that keeps people safe must be good.”

Barbaras bowled over at awards There was a standing ovation November 8 for the overall winner of Isle of Wight Radio’s 2018 Local Heroes Awards.

For more than 40 years, Brading’s Barbara Creed has been improving the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of young Islanders.

The youth worker was named Overall Local Hero, at the Cowes Yacht Haven event, supported by Wightfibre.

Barbara said: “I’m in a bit of shock. I didn’t expect it at all. This is my first night off in nearly 42 years. But I absolutely love my job!

“It will go to the youth centre with all the other trophies. It will have...pride of place there. That’s not just for me, it’s for everybody.”

Isle of Wight Radio’s Lifetime Achievement award, sponsored by Beacon Magazine, was won by the inspirational Ron Bowler, who has spent

decades helping to run Mountbatten’s annual Walk The Wight. Ron Bowler said: “I’m gobsmacked. I’m used to being on the other side and doing presentations. I’m just overwhelmed.”

Other award winners include The Freshwater Coffee House. Owners Becky and Stefan were “...a bit overwhelmed, actually”, when they were handed the Customer Service accolade, sponsored by WRS Systems.

The Charmes Care Best Carer award was handed to Sarah Lacey. Jan Cave won the Best Neighbour award, sponsored by Hose Rhodes Dickson.

The Fundraiser award, sponsored by PC Consultants, went to the Isle of Wight Stormtrooper who walked to Paris for Island children’s charity Layla’s Trust. Cowes’ Ben Allen said: “[We are] five guys having a bit of fun, but at the same time bringing awareness to a

fantastic cause on the Isle of Wight. [It] is just massively humbling” The Inspirational Leader award, sponsored by Inflight Peripherals, went to Sandi Gibbs. Sue Clerkin, who spends her week helping at a number of charities, was named Best Volunteer, sponsored by Central Garage.

The Emergency Service Award, sponsored by Medina Food Service, was lifted by the team from Sandown and Shanklin Independent Lifeboat. Mark Birch said: “We don’t get a lot of thanks.

To have this achievement and to be here for this award...is beautiful.”

Campaigners say floaty is costing a fortune and should be scrapped.

Campaigners have launched a petition in the hopes of forcing the Isle of Wight Council to stop spending “millions” on the floating bridge and make them buy a new one.

The petition is entitled, “stop spending millions on failing floaty & get a new one”. It had almost 1,000 signatures on Thursday (November 15).

The petition asks IW Council chief executive John Metcalfe, leader of the council Councillor Dave Stewart, cabinet member for transport Cllr Ian Ward, floating bridge 6 project manager Sean Newton and the IW Council as a whole to “cut its losses” and sell the bridge “before it depreciates any more”.

The Floaty Stakeholder campaigners, a group of concerned engineers, started the petition and would like the council to procure a new service similar in size and specification to the previous model - floating bridge 5.

The campaigners added: “Enough is enough! We are requesting that the council

stops throwing money at this money pit.”

They claim the bridge is bad for business, traffic, and is “not nearly as good as the old floating bridge 5”.

The stakeholders continued: “Stop giving our taxpayer money away to the private sector and depreciating public assets!”

Cllr Ward said: “To suggest this council can go out and buy a new floating bridge

Nothing taken in mysterious triple break-in at St Thomas of Canterbury Church, Newport.

Church triple trespassed against A Catholic church in Newport has been broken into three times in the past week and a half - but nothing has been taken.

Both the Pyle Street and High Street entrance to St Thomas of Canterbury Church have seen break-ins in recent days leaving clergy and parishioners questioning what the motives of the crimes were.

Parish secretary Margi Timney said: “We don’t know if this is hate crime, or street sleepers trying to come in for the warmth or just young hoodlums. They’ve come in all three times and they’ve taken nothing.

“The first one was in the

Holyrood Hall, a community hall, they broke the lock to get in, it’s a massive big red door on the High Street. So they got in, and this lady who does the country market, her cupboard was double padlocked and they smashed that, broke the door in two, and took nothing.

“It didn’t even look like they had gone through her cupboards. Everything was left exactly as we left it, it’s very, very strange.”

The second break-in happened at the property’s courtyard, the confessional door, which is a large green door that can be seen from Pyle Street, was kicked in and then smashed the window

to the area where the priest gets ready in his robes before mass. Again nothing was taken.

Then again on Sunday night (November 11) the same heavy green doors were smashed into again, with further windows inside the church broken, but again, nothing was taken.

“It’s more perplexing that they haven’t taken anything,” added the parish secretary.

Someone also tried to break into the priest’s living quarters but was unsuccessful.

The Diocese have agreed to secure the building at “whatever the cost” and are

supplying iron to lock down the doors and fit CCTV. “They’ve forced us to do this. It’s quite alarming and makes you feel vulnerable,” said Mrs Timney.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said: “We received a report of a burglary at St Thomas’ Church in Newport.

“Between 4.30pm on November 8 and 8am on November 9, entry was forced into the church and damage was caused to a door inside the building, but nothing was reported stolen.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting 44180421033.”

Both entrances to the church have been damaged.

David’s call for Eco Island documents An Island filmmaker is calling for the release of a council review into the death of David Green who killed himself after being accused of fraud by the IW Council.

An inquest was held into the death of Mr Green, chief executive Officer of the Eco Island Community Interest Company in 2014.

He had taken his own life the previous October five days after being falsely accused of fraud by the Isle of Wight Council. Concerned about how information had been released to the press by the Isle of Wight Council, the coroner, Caroline Summary, addressed them directly.

She said: “I trust that there

will be a full investigation and appropriate action taken against whoever has issued this information, either by way of a leak, in particular if it’s by way of a leak, or if the information was issued prematurely.”

That investigation never took place, according to the filmmaker.

He says the council conducted an internal review instead which has never been published.

David George, director of Utility Films said: “A review is not an investigation. Our 70 minute documentary Wightwash looks at both sustainability on the Island, and the troubled Eco Island

project from its inception in 2007 to its collapse in 2013.

“It calls for the release of the Isle of Wight Council’s review into Eco Island. We have suggested a private showing of the documentary to all 40 Isle of Wight Councillors. 24 have replied, only 10 have expressed an interest in seeing the film.”

An Isle of Wight Council spokesman said: “In 2014, a review was conducted by the council’s then monitoring officer and Mr Green’s family were informed of the findings.

“The council will not comment any further out of respect for the family of Mr Green.”

David George is calling for the public release of information relating to Mr Green’s death.

White-tailed eagle no threat to red squirrels

Roy Dennis, of the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation, which plans to reintroduce sea eagles to the Isle of Wight, has told the IW Observer that he feels “certain” these magnificent birds represent no threat to the Isle of Wight’s iconic red squirrel.

The Isle of Wight is one of the last places in the south of England where the red squirrel is still flourishing.

White-tailed eagles have been extinct on the Isle of Wight for over two hundred years, the last pair to successfully breed did so on Culver cliff in 1780.

At a number of public meetings to inform the public

of the plans to reintroduce the eagle, the possible threat to the red squirrel was the number one concern of those attending.

According to Mr Dennis: “the white-tailed eagle is a big lumbering bird that does not hunt in woods. We simply don’t think their taking red squirrels is a possibility. We have a camera filming their nests in Scotland, and in seven thousand images, we do not have a single example of a red squirrel kill. The real risks to squirrels are cats and cars.”

In reply, Helen Butler MBE of the Isle of Wight Red Squirrels Trust told the IW Observer: “I’ve looked at

everything I’ve been told and asked the opinion of other red squirrel experts in other parts of the country, but I’d like to keep an open mind as things can go wrong and nature doesn’t always do what we think it will. I would hope that if they caused a problem to the squirrels that they would be removed.”

According to Ms Butler, the reintroduction of the whitetailed eagle might even be beneficial to red squirrels on the Isle of Wight. “I’ve been told they scatter the buzzards, or may even take a buzzard, which would help the squirrels as the high number of buzzards are causing them a problem.”

Lizards live on A soot covered lizard has been found alive and well a week after a fire tore through the Isle of Wight Pet Centre.

Staff at the centre took to Facebook to share the good news on Tuesday night (November 13), they wrote: “This little guy was found in the cafe whilst they were repainting it. Covered in soot but alert and active. He will need some TLC and a bit of extra grub, but we’re hopeful he’ll do just fine.”

This isn’t the first critter found alive since the November 5 blaze at

Watergate Road, Newport.

On Friday (November 9), another lizard was found alive and well after escaping days before.

Again, staff took to Facebook to share the good news, writing: “This little guy escaped his vivarium in the days before the fire and we couldn’t find him anywhere, despite searching everywhere. “Once the fire happened we sadly presumed him dead, but still found no sign of him. Today he was spotted casually chilling out on a shelf!

“We’re so thrilled to welcome him up to the animal room with all the others, brave little dude.”

The Island community has come together in support of the business after a number of animals, including famous and loved cockatoo Brolly, who sadly died in the fire.

A fundraising appeal raised £3,200 in just seven days, smashing its £1,500 target.

Architecture under threat across the Island 18

Historic England says a number of historic island structures are “at risk”.

Northwood House, Norris Castle, Newport Minster, Cowes Hammerhead Crane, Quarr Abbey remains and 12 churches across the Island are all on the Heritage at

windows and interiors”. It was rated “very bad” on the register.

The Hammerhead Crane’s condition was rated “poor” although Historic England have offered a grant towards a feasibility study and says it will work with stakeholders

Quarr Abbey’s ancient ruins are “in an advanced state of decline” according to the report with further repairs needed to get the site off the at risk register.

Holy Trinity Church in Ventnor is described as “poor”, with soft Victorian stone work being this place of worship’s main problem.

Northwood House has been provided with a repairs package by the National Lottery Fund as there are unresolved maintenance issues that are keeping parts of the building closed. They now have a conservation architect’s help.

Newport’s Remembrance service was very well attended.

The sacrifices given by the war heroes who served in the First World War have been marked with poignancy in Newport, reports Stephanie Hankin.

At 5am on November 11, 1918 the Armistice was signed ending the war between Germany and the Allies. The Armistice came

into force at 11am.

As the clock struck the awaited hour, as many as 1,000 people gathered in the square around the cenotaph and took a two minute silence to remember those fallen heroes.

Parade Marshall Simon Tutton explained there were 250 scouts, brownies and

cubs attending the service.

“A true reminder 100 years on and still our fallen heroes’ memory lives on through the younger generation,” added Mr Tutton.

The silence was broken by the bugler playing the Last Post and a member of the clergy asked the crowd to join in the Lord’s Prayer. The

wreaths were carefully laid and the flags were raised in unison.

Steve King a town crier for Ryde and Southampton said: “I am at the service in memory of the fallen bell ringers of WW1.”

Mr King said he lost three great uncles from 1915-1917.

He was wearing his general

service cross which he received for his eight year service in catering and a medal for his involvement in the Queens’ regiment during her Silver Jubilee.

Nick Cherryman a fireman for 26 years also received a medal for the Queens’ service and said he was representing his father

who was a Royal Pioneer Corps at the service. They were responsible for jobs under the Royal Engineer’s supervision which included the PLUTO operation, a famous pipeline under the sea at Shanklimnwhich was used to pump fuel to the Allies.

A parade of more than 70 vintage vehicles has officially declared the Military Road re-open following a major upgrade project by Island Roads.

A 7.5-mile section of the iconic Military Road has been upgraded in what is the largest carriageway improvement project delivered in a single scheme

by Island Roads under the Highways Improvement Programme.

The whole section between Brook and Chale has been resurfaced and, where necessary, rebuilt in a scheme lasting just over four weeks. The whole 12-miles of the Military Road has now been upgraded by Island Roads.

Island Roads scheduled the project for outside the main holiday season but before the onset of winter when severe conditions - and resulting delays - could be expected.

Work was also undertaken around the clock to reduce disruption and continual liaison was undertaken with

local business and residents to accommodate their access needs wherever possible.

Keith Gourlay, Island Roads construction manager, said: “We would really like to thank the local community for the support and cooperation they gave us during the work.

“We were pleased to be able to deliver this major improvement project with only a small number of lost shifts - through issues such as the weather and ground conditions - and we hope residents and tourists will now enjoy a smoother ride on this scenic and historic stretch of road.”

Ian Ward, IW Council cabinet member for infrastructure and transport said: “This project was a huge undertaking and I am delighted it has been delivered to schedule and with considerable effort given to working with the local community to minimise disruption.

“This follows on from the recent strengthening

of the Brighstone Viaduct and is indicative of the massive investment the Island is able to make in its road network thanks to the huge Government grant unlocked by the Highways Improvement Project.”

The parade of vintage vehicles was intended to drive home the message that the Military Road - one of the UK’s most photographed highways - is a route to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace.

The ride-out featured vehicles from the Vectis Historic Vehicle Club, the Island MG Owners Club as well as several smaller groups and individuals.

Southern Vectis also brought their 1939 Bristol K5G open top bus, affectionately known as Old Girl, to carry other dignitaries and guests along the ride-out route to the Wight Mouse in Chale.

David Batchelor, events coordinator for the Vectis Historic Vehicle Club, said: “It was an absolute pleasure to drive along the newly resurfaced road today and we

were delighted to be invited to be part of the official opening. Island Roads has done a superb job and I am really pleased that so many vintage vehicle owners came out today to enjoy the smooth ride along this beautiful stretch of road.”

Local ward member Councillor Steve Hastings cut a ceremonial ribbon to allow the vintage convoy to pass along the improved section.

Lizzie Wade venue manager at IW Pearl said: “The Military Road certainly needed upgrading and is now looking fantastic. This is a very popular road used by locals and tourists and its vastly improved condition will reflect well on the Island.”

The Military Road project was part of the Island’s Highway Improvement Programme which is financed in the main through a grant of £477 million awarded by the Department for Transport.

Can everyone stop using the C word?

Just before Remembrance Sunday, everyone starts talking about Christmas.

In my family, this chatter begins in a predictable way, “It’s your turn to have so-and-so”,they cry, “but we had her last year” the usual response.

This Yule, to avoid his familial obligations, one selfish sibling plans on flying all the way to Australia, I’m quietly impressed.

Autumn used to be a time for conkers not Christmas.

As November 5 drew nearer, our thoughts turned to making a terrible guy, with which we would hang around Gunnersbury underground station, collecting donations from bustling commuters.

Once the fireworks were safely over, we had the decency to wait until mid December before going out carol singing.

In those days, street urchins like me, working melodically together, could pick up a couple of pounds a night from the grand houses around Ealing common, this was serious cash to a 10-yearold.

I was a choir boy, I could easily hold a tune for the fifteen or twenty seconds it took, either for someone to pay us to clear off, or for us to realise the miserable gits wouldn’t be opening the door.

When it dawned on us that we’d failed, we quit warbling sharpish, saving our angelic little voices for the next music loving householder.

In my youth, parents didn’t have much money, so everyone had rubbish presents, except Trevor Harding, the only child of

One memorably snowy Christmas, I did get a Lego set, complete with electric motor, I was able to build and power something with wheels, so patiently, put together a bulldozer.

Once assembled, I opened the front door, planning to clear the doorstep of snow, using my little-brick model.

Unfortunately, I hadn’t understood that the stupid motor couldn’t get wet, so two minutes later, my best-ever present stopped working, the motor flooded and

forever useless. By the time I had children of my own, Christmas should have been a time of great joy and happiness, but it wasn’t. I was able to buy more expensive gifts, although in the interest of historical accuracy, I have to point out I didn’t do the actual buying.

Women are so much better at it than men eh?

Presents still ruined my Christmas, because gifts claiming to be ready out-of–thebox, actually require a degree in mechanical engineering, as well as a comprehensive tool kit to assemble, making Christmas Eves a time of stress and anxiety.

As the magical night slipped away, my frustration with useless instructions and the purchaser of said gifts grew, until there was an almighty row. “Why was I not warned in advance that I needed to assemble the Space Shuttle, why do toy manufacturers flog part-built products with loathsome photocopied Chinese instruction leaflets?”

I knew I was pushing my luck by losing my temper, what with the big dinner still to be cooked, mostly for my relatives not hers, but that’s Christmas for you. I know it’s still very early, but let me be the first to wish you a peaceful yuletide.

The council is responsible for the collection, treatment and disposal of household recyclables and waste on the Island - which is delivered

through a contract with Amey.

Once the closing date for the survey has passed, the information will be reviewed and used to identify possible improvements to the existing services.

Hard copies are available at council buildings and libraries.

Unfortunately, no responses received after the closing date can be considered by the council.

Completed hard copies should be returned by Monday 7 January 2019 to: Waste Management, County Hall, High Street, Newport.

Ferries get back to Bob

Ferry companies respond to the MP’s letter following a string of disruption.

MP Bob Seely has received responses from the Island’s three ferry companies in the light of disruption and incidents since August.

The MP wrote to Red Funnel, Wightlink and Hovertravel asking them to explain disruption to cross-Solent services, due to “technical and mechanical faults, legal issues and accidents”.

He also said there had been cancellations due to weather

conditions.

In reply, both Wightlink and Hovertravel apologised to passengers for disruption, although both pointed out that their services were ‘reliable’.

Red Funnel told Bob several accidents involving its vessels were being “comprehensively investigated” and added that it had experienced far less disruption than other operators. It said it was

committed to operating a safe and reliable service.

Mr Seely said: “I am pleased that all the operators are taking their responsibility for these incidents seriously and that they understand passengers’ frustrations and anger over what has happened over the last few months.

“I have noted what all three companies have said but I will continue to monitor their performance.”

Remembering Warrior - the true War Horse As thousands of Isle of Wight people joined millions more across Europe to commemorate the Centenary of the end of the First World War, the name of one of the true heroes may hardly have got a mention, apart from perhaps in just a few pockets on the Island, including from our MP Bob Seely.

One of our most memorable WW1 stories is that of General Jack Seely, Bob Seely’s greatgreat uncle, and particularly Jack’s horse Warrior, who has had books written about him, and was the inspiration behind the film and the stage production of ‘War Horse’.

Warrior was the central figure in one of the most incredible tales of bravery and unity throughout the whole of the 1914-18 conflict. The horse was born in Yafford in 1908, and it was in August, 1914 that Jack and Warrior arrived in France, and for the next four years cheated death time and again in battle after battle.

They ultimately led one of the last ever cavalry charges, against the Germans near Amiens, in March, 1918.

By then everyone was exclaiming that ‘the bullet has not been made that could finish Warrior’.

Warrior and Jack were together in many battles, including the Somme and Ypres. The first time Jack rode Warrior through shell fire, at the battle of Mons, he recounted: “To my amazement, Warrior made no attempt to run away.

I could feel him tremble a little between my legs, but he pretended to be quite unperturbed. He was pretending to be brave and succeeding in his task.”

Incredibly, Warrior went lame on one occasion, and Jack rode another horse, which was hit by a shell and killed. He wrote: “I had three ribs broken myself...but my first thought was ‘what luck it was not Warrior’.”

Warrior again survived when a sniper’s bullet

The cottage he was stabled in was bombed, but he miraculously emerged from the rubble unscathed.

At Moreuil Wood in 1918, Jack maintained that riding Warrior at the enemy made them retreat, believing there were ‘thousands’ of soldiers following, although half the group had fallen by the wayside. Thousands of horses perished during the War, but miraculously Warrior survived.

After the War ended Warrior returned to the Island, and even took part in a point-to-point race here before passing away at the grand old age of 33.

Upon his death he had an unprecedented obituary in one national newspaper which exclaimed: ‘The Horse

the Germans Could Not Kill’.

Before the war Jack Seely was an MP and sat in the Cabinet from 1911-1914, alongside his life-long friend Winston Churchill, who also

shared his understanding of equine support. It was Winston Churchill who intervened to secure the safe return of tens of thousands of war horses stranded in

MP Seely plants a tree at Osborne House in remembrance.

Europe after the First World War. In September 2014, 100 years after Warrior first went to war on the Western Front, he was posthumously awarded the PDSA Dickin medal, recognised as the animal’s Victoria Cross and honouring all the animals that served in the Great War. The Centenary of the end of WW1 was commemorated across the Island - and across Europe last Sunday, November 11, with MP Bob Seely planting a tree at Osborne House to commemorate two Royal gardeners, Charles Mew and Ernest Johnson, who lost their lives in WW1, and to remember Warrior. At such a time it is fitting that ‘The Warrior Trail’ has been created on the Isle of Wight, a six- mile circular trail, which

can be tackled on foot, by bike and even on horseback.

The trail follows much of the route on which Warrior was once exercised, which ran all the way from Carisbrooke Castle to the beach at Brook Bay, where he was trained to confront the dangers of battle in the surf.

The trail also winds around the pretty villages of Mottistone and Brook, where Jack Seely once lived, up onto Mottistone Down past the Neolithic Long Stone, and along a section of the Isle of Wight’s coastal path.

The alternate sections for cyclists explore the nearby villages of Brighstone and Yafford, where Warrior was born. For further details of the trail see website: visitisleofwight.co.uk

Polly Matthews - In Memorandum

Polly Emma Matthews, née Brown, born 11th February 1965, sadly passed away on 22nd October 2018, with many family and friends close by.

Much loved mother of Joshua, Tilly and Willoughby, and a strong woman close to many within a tight-knit family; Polly was a unique character with a passion for life and music.

Island festivals small and large will never be the same again, so please join us in a final celebration of Polly’s life this Friday, 16th November.

Funeral Service The funeral will take place at the Springwood Burial Ground in Newchurch.

All are welcome.

Please arrive for around 10.30am for an 11.00am start to the service.

Remembrance gets underway in Ryde outside the town council building.

Ryde remembers Ryde marked the centenary of the Armistice 1918 with a special peal of the bells at All Saints Church both before and after the act of Remembrance.

The parade formed up in Station Street led by the Wight Diamonds Marching Band, the Ryde branch of the Royal British Legion whose standard was carried by Mr David Greenwood.

The town’s book of Remembrance was carried by a Sea cadet from TS Royal George as they marched to All Saints Church for the service officiated by the Reverend Howard Barker.

The packed church heard a reading by Mr Brian Harris, Branch President of the RBL, and a special anthem was sung by the church choir. During the service Mr

Harris presented the book of Remembrance to Revd Barker and it was placed on the altar of the warrior chapel.

The act of Remembrance at 11am was observed with the parade marshal giving the exhortation and Kohima and Miss Denise Tizard from the Wight Diamonds played the Last Post and Reveille, the standards dipped in salute.

The wreath laying was led by Cllr Charles Chapman former IW Council Chairman, Cllr Malcolm Ross Mayor of Ryde and Mr Brian Harris RBL. After the parade Terry Clarkson, who was marking his last parade at Ryde said he was overwhelmed with the sheer number of people both young and old who had turned out to mark this most special of centenaries.

The hundredth anniversary of the end of World War I was commemorated in Sophie Watson’s Garden by 47 giant poppies, made by pupils of Nettlestone Primary School, representing all those in Seaview and Nettlestone who never returned home from the Great War. The remembrance service was conducted by Rev Alison Morley, and attended by the deputy lieutenant of the Isle of Wight, Kate Collins. During the ceremony, Nettlestone school choir sang, “keep the home fires burning”.

Sophie Watson’s Garden was an apt location for the

remembrance service, since both of Sophie Watson’s sons, aged 19 and 21, were lost in action during the 1914–18 war. On her death, the garden was bequeathed to the village by her husband as a lasting memorial.

Present at the service was Fletcher Hughes, proudly wearing the medals of his great-grandfather, Norman Bartholomew, the former mayor of Medina Borough Council. Also present was Bernard Wood of the Great War Society, wearing the uniform of the Isle of Wight Rifles, the 8th battalion of the Hampshire Regiment.

Bembridge falls silent 100 years since Armistice was signed.

Bembridge remembers its fallen Up to a thousand people gathered around the Bembridge War Memorial to mark the hundredth anniversary of the end of the First World War. In a moving ceremony, conducted by the Reverend Dr Amanda Bloor, Mike Samuelson read a list of Bembridge residents killed in military campaigns from the start of the Great War to the present day.

Thousands of crocheted and knitted poppies had been put up around the village to mark this solemn occasion.

service was 95-year-old World War II veteran, Donald Sutherland, who served in Egypt between 1944 and 1947 with the Manchester Regiment.

In a spirit of reconciliation, Mr Sutherland told the IW Observer that he had been treated by a German POW doctor when he had fallen ill.

He also reminisced that his experience with a female sergeant-major was his most frightening experience of military service, since she, “made me stand to attention even when lying ill in a hospital bed�.

Around 10,000 people are diagnosed with the disease every year in the UK and tragically one in four people won’t survive for a month.

Three in four won’t survive for a year making pancreatic cancer the quickest killing cancer.

Despite being the cancer with the worst outcomes, many people are unaware of the disease and the devastating impact it can have. As World Pancreatic Cancer Day arrived on November 15 I urge your readers to find out more about the disease and spread the world about its symptoms. An increased awareness of the symptoms, which include tummy and back pain, indigestion, itchy

Marine Engineering is an exact science. Those within the industry tend to be at the absolute height of their game, from the architects and designers who visualise and plan projects, through to the mechanics and technicians who go on to build them.

Cruise ships, yachts, and even ferries – none of it is winged, bodged or done ‘by the eye’ – the hours involved in even the most basic of tasks can run into the hundreds.

It can feel painfully slow and never-ending, but there is very good reason why.

They have to get it right.

There are hundreds of rules and endless regulations at every stage of creating a ship. These geniuses have to conform to health and safety, The Maritime & Coastguard Agency, The International Maritime Organisation, The Department for Transport as well as a number of UN agencies to be sure that the end product is efficient, seaworthy and safe for those

who’ll use it. My knowledge is not far reaching, but I have learnt a lot from being around those whose is, and the vast majority of workers from shipyards and shipbuilding take pride in their work and love to see one of their projects succeeding and being used for its intended purpose.

Every one of them, who I have talked to about our new Floating Bridge, tends to offer the same explanation.

The problem lays at the very start of the process, before a rivet had been used or a soldering iron heated up – it was designed to incorrect specifications.

And their answer to this is either the then council whilst receiving pressure as to why it was taking so long, rushed and didn’t do all of the relevant and expected checks at each stage. Or whoever commenced the original work and kick started the whole project, didn’t actually know what they were doing.

The manufacturers cannot

be blamed for any of the problems whatsoever. They would have only gone by what they were given to work with. Shipyards aren’t like painters and decorators, if they foresee a problem or can’t do something, they won’t simply override it, find a bodge or work around it. This would put them at substantial risk – best case scenario, they’d simply get sued for millions of pounds.

Worst case, someone gets hurt or is injured by the vessel and they’ll end up facing a prosecution for gross negligence.

These businesses are built on and survive only through the reputation they gain from their work. They simply do not take risks.

This leads me to believe that all this talk from our esteemed council on ‘legal action’ and ‘ramifications’ for the shipyard is just hyperbole and if enacted will lead nowhere.

It’s a classic distraction technique to avoid pinning the blame on anyone within

County Hall.

Someone, perhaps a whole department, maybe even an external contractor or just an out of their depth councillor screwed it up.

Rather than risk losing their pension, taking responsibility and apologising for the huge mistake. They play the ‘Blame Game’.

They’ve missed a golden opportunity to gain some respect, credibility and perhaps have people for once think they aren’t all out for themselves and just come forward and admit their mistake.

Well whoever the culprit is, you’ve been protected and the Isle of Wight Council has once again further installed the belief, not just to Islanders – but this time to the whole country that you don’t know what you’re doing.

They haven’t been able to sort out the floating bridge, do you really trust them to build an actual bridge slightly further up the river?

Towards the end of September I came across an unusually forthright piece about assisted dying, at the very least a controversial topic.

Indeed, one that terrifies our elected representatives, offends half of the medical profession and is anathema to all of faith. Dignity in Dying is one organisation which campaigns cautiously for assisted suicide and its sister, Compassion in Dying, makes provision for those who wish to instruct others to allow their death by ceasing therapeutic or even lifesupporting interventions.

He cited the comforting competence with which vets deal with the for some equally distressing circumstance in animals and, perhaps because I was a vet, I support readily his proposing the same option for humans.

It is high time that death was demystified.

For many of us it is seen simply as the end of living.

Imbuing life with sanctity and in so doing justifying a hands-off approach for all except God, is fine for those of faith. But, please, allow the rest of us to make our own choices.

Stand back and allow the law to be so changed that those of us who are materialistic realists may exercise our preference for a dignified, painless end at a time of our own choosing.

I read with dismay the Plans nodded through (November 9).

Should the Council pass the STP plans it would indicate either that the council had not understood the implications of the plans or that the council do not consider what is good for Island community. Which of these is correct?

It is worth asking, is our MP going to fight for us or would he rather remain silent.

This article reminds us how important it is for the Island community to ask serious questions of those responsible for the delivery of health care on the Island.

I hope the Observer will take on the role of ensuring that the public is kept informed.

‘Don’t even start me on education’ Colin Greene

Almost every week offers up yet more examples of failed projects, ideas and cuts to that are not really fully warranted.

Penny pinching parking charges that will surely drive away high street customers leading to more shop closures and lower business rates income. Oh yes, this will raise income. £17,000 gain in parking fees could be one business rates.

Nor do I understand the logic of spending £6.4m, half of which is overspend to correct design issues. In any other business this would be judged a total failure with absolute consequences.

I don’t know who is to blame, but someone or body

is and they should face up to the criticism with their job.

When you think what £3.2m could be spent on it beggars belief. If only there was a different way, more professional, compassionate, and accountable process to run our failed Local Authority.

Don’t even start me on education - failed again; spending £256,000 (IWO 2/11) to collect fines from parents who take their kids away is not the right solution, it wastes precious money and doesn’t resolve the issue.

In fairness part of the problem is historic - a conservative idea to save cost that went badly wrong.

In the early Thatcherite years

LA Technical Services had to bid for work to open up the market. The end result was almost all were closed and LA now rely entirely on outsourcing everything including technical advice.

When you don’t have an engineering degree you can’t write a decent specification, let alone judge what is good or how to assess the performance values of others. You’re blind and can’t see the pitfalls ahead.

Cut and paste is the nor to create meaningless wordy documents As a retired consultant I attended many council meetings throughout the UK to appraise tenders only to find gaping holes, which my client rarely wanted to

address. Finance Officers would often say ‘does it fit the brief, yes or no’. They never wanted to hear not exactly, or but. Another common issue is LAs falter on assessing lifetime costs.

Taking the lowest cost but assuming the service life is the same as others. These are complex issues if you don’t know what you are doing you rely on others.

Remember Island Roads contract? The council leader spent 10s of thousands on consultant fees to ‘define’ the scope of a contract they had already issued.

Again in fairness not every officer or councillor is incompetent, but some are and they must be shown the door now.

Rewarding failure Ira O’Nick

The Care and Quality Commissions report into Vecta House in Newport, published on the October 31, 2018, found the Care Home run by Barchester Healthcare Homes Ltd, to be inadequate for safety and well led, with all other areas requiring improvement.

A medical emergency in May apparently discovered patients to be anxious and scared. Communal areas were found to smell of urine.

The list of failings in the CQC’s report goes on and on.

Interestingly, last Saturday’s Times newspaper, November 10, reported Barchester Homes chief executive, Pete Calveley, (that’s Calveley not Cavalierly), was awarded a £200k pay rise last year

and apparently earned a staggering £914,000, this is despite the Care and Quality Commission reporting that residences at some of Barchester homes were put at risk of harm through a lack of staff, medication errors and failures to keep premises clean.

The temerity of the companies statement in relation to the CQC’s Vecta House report, “the wellbeing of our residents is of the utmost importance to us and our absolute focus is to continue to deliver a high quality of care.” is frankly staggering, since it would appear to Illustrate complete denial of the CQC’s findings, they clearly have NOT been delivering a high quality of care. The Department of

Health said: “Services that deliver inadequate care will have to improve or risk being closed down.” However, more worryingly, the CQC’s findings would appear to illustrate a worrying pattern of failure in many services when left to the private sector. A hallmark, dare I suggest, of this governments rush to privatise everything in a bid to abrogate direct responsibility, whilst allowing their friends in business to make a quick buck, often at the taxpayers expense.

One wonders if residence in such failing care homes are simply seen as a cash cow to make a fast buck, whilst being provided with minimal standards, and in some cases inhumane standards of care?

We are writing to thank all those that have contributed to the Commemorative Events, in Shanklin and across the Bay (and Island), to mark the Centenary of the end of World War 1 and honour the sacrifices made 100 years ago.

Children in all Bay Primary Schools have written poems and designed (and received) commemorative mugs; they have created living crosses (thanks to Rotary); they have made and laid poppy pebbles; and they have paid other tributes in memory of those service personnel, 100 or more years ago, who would have been pupils in those same schools.

Other young residents of the Bay contributed to the commemoration of War Graves in Christ Church, bell ringing in St Saviours, knitting poppies (105 for each resident of Shanklin that did not return in WW1), an exhibition in the library, a remembrance day theatre concert, and a range of church services and activities, such as Age Concern’s, that should make their parents and their community proud.

This culminated in Shanklin’s Armistice Day service, in the Old Village, and we can only thank Mark Watson (who also produced a commemorative card - a copy of the first Commemoration in Shanklin 100 years ago); Shanklin

Town Brass Band, for a really moving programme of music; Traci Stockman’s Abide With Me was a very poignant and fitting tribute to the fallen; Island Roads for ensuring the Road Safety of all involved; for local emergency services for their part in the service; for Bugler Mitch Jones for an emotional last post and reveille; to Sally and Strawberry Thatch for supplying electricity and space for the band; to all of the uniformed groups and individuals that laid wreaths and participated in the service; Curator Terry Carpenter for ensuring the grounds were immaculate; to all those that read the

names of the fallen overseas and in Shanklin, in the Great War and other conflicts; and to Rev Tony Richards and the congregation of what must have been 1,000 people, Parade Marshall Steve Rogers, Standard Bearer Gary Ashley, RBL Members and Guards of Honour, for ensuring that ‘at the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them’. We are sure that across the Island, and beyond, the sacrifices made 100 years ago have been fittingly honoured and that future generations will continue to commemorate the 11th hour, of the 11th day of the 11th month.

We’ve had enough Cameron Palin, East Cowes

It seems to me some council staff could be putting their own careers before the Island they are supposed to serve and we’ve had enough!

From poor project management on a farce of a floating bridge, to ballooned car parking charges, our paid officers appear to be in control like a bad episode of ‘Yes Minister’. They aren’t elected by us, and we cannot vote them out!

Islanders are fed up with all of the short-term thinking that damages the economy.

The floating bridge fiasco is the perfect example, the aim

to help local businesses is in effect causing businesses to close as unreliability means people don’t want to use it.

It seems to me that the council has no clear plan to save local businesses, as their actions to save money end up backfiring on them in real terms.

If the council stopped cutting back services and actually invested in once profit making ones like the floating bridge, then they would have more money to reinvest in very important public services. The officers have been warned by local

engineers and users that there were major operational and design problems - not ‘snagging issues’ - and yet they were ignored by County Hall. Hurting local businesses and local people ultimately costs the council - and therefore us - more money.

A poorly performing floating bridge costs us all money - not only on failed fixes but also because the council won’t make a lot of money if any from the fares.

Higher parking charges are penny wise and pound foolish.

Overcharging

for parking means fewer people shopping locally, which in turn can affect the council badly - everything from former shopkeepers on housing benefit to less business rate money. It’s time that the council staff focus on job growth and generating more money, and not on how we can cut a smaller and smaller government pie.

Do these staff members actually have the economic skills we need to save the Island?

Fixed link is way forward Sarah Bishop

There are so many arguments in favour of a fixed link that most outsiders cannot understand why we don’t already have one. Tunnels and bridges spanning miles are being built everywhere else to improve connections.

The Isle of Wight is only 4 miles from the prosperous South East but a world apart in terms of demographics and prosperity.

All the Solent operators have let us down recently with regular technical difficulties, breakdowns, accidents, failure of computer systems, lack of safety certification and skeleton staff even during the summer months where sickness causes cancellations.

During this time, we have seen their profits rise exponentially while we have witnessed a decline in our tourist industry and closure of businesses. The high fares and constant cancellations are causing an isolation which is impacting on our ability to recruit into health and education. St Mary’s spends £1m a month on agency staff because of recruitment problems. As GPs and dentists retire, new young professionals are unwilling to relocate here where the isolation and decline means no jobs for partners and schools are sub optimal.

Island schools score well below their mainland counterparts for Ofsted and attainment. With a link we could attract the best people

to work in our schools, hospital and medical centres.

St Mary’s could even become a specialist hospital serving people across the

water as well as islanders.

Over the next 10 years the number of over 85s will increase by 40%.

Evidence shows that criminality is linked to poor education, poverty and unemployment as well as alcohol and drug abuse.

Lack of opportunities create deprivation and make an increase in crime inevitable.

20.3% of Island children live in poverty compared with 16.6% in the South East. It is anticipated that

with a link crime levels will go down as the economy uplifts providing more jobs giving hope and aspirations to young people.

Vehicle ferry sailings have reduced between 2000 and 2015 on all routes as crossings have been removed and frequent technical failures cause delays and cancellations.

As larger vessels are being introduced this will only get worse with fewer sailings.

A tunnel will provide access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week allowing people to work, keep in touch with family/ friends. Leaving for a holiday the night before or having to

catch the last ferry back will be a thing of the past.

What can you do?

Our MP and Government cannot make the ferry companies reduce fares or improve their service.

The recent online petition “Empower the UK Government or Parliament to regulate ferry prices” signed by over 17,500 signatories received the response from the Government “There are no plans to regulate ferry prices in England. Ferry companies provide diverse services at a range of prices.

There is no evidence of market failure to require regulatory intervention.”

The only way forward is to support the campaign for a fixed link and the first step which is a Viability Study to be undertaken by ARUP at a cost of £130,000. Despite the fact that the IOW council has spent well in excess of this figure trying to keep the Floating Bridge going, they cannot find the money for this study so it needs to be crowdfunded by donations.

If the study results are positive, ARUP and the IOW Council will take this forward to the DfT to request a further Government funded feasibility study.

More on Mill Street Joy Miller, resident of Medina Court

WWThere is patch of land of considerable size alongside Sainsbury’s end of Mill Street which has been cleared of weeds a couple of times last year then left only for them to grow again. This year they have come along and mowed the weeds a few times.

By they I mean the council’s contractor.

Last Friday the contractor came back to mow the weeds, followed by Monday to repeat the exercise, on Tuesday - lo and behold the same council contractor turned up and they laid turf on top of the mowed weeds a pointless

exercise as the weeds will only come through as anyone knows.

My point is, was this done in preparation for seating, so that the residents of Medina Court and others on the opposite side of Mill Street have somewhere to sit while recovering from the trauma of crossing Mill Street and if so can I ask Julie Jones Evans how much did it cost as a council tax payer or did it come out of the 106 monies that was originally and supposedly put up for our crossing!

Noke Common cracks An Island councillor is demanding to know why deep cracks are already appearing in a road that was resurfaced only 12 months ago.

Ward councillor for Parkhurst, Cllr Andrew Garratt, took photographs at Noke Common Road showing cracks that are 20cm deep.

Asking Island Roads for an explanation, Cllr Garratt also questioned the delays in making repairs, and warned: “Cracks like this, in places 20cm or more deep, and two

centimetres or more wide, are a real hazard particularly for those on two wheels”.

In response, Island Roads has said the cracking was an expected consequence of ground movement.

“Such movement is not uncommon in prolonged periods of dry hot weather - such as that experienced this summer - and ground heavy in clay is particularly prone. This is what appears to have caused the cracking in a section of Noke Common which has a history of

similar movement. Many areas on the mainland are also experiencing similar cracking due to this type of movement.

“We will shortly be undertaking a programme of works to seal cracking at Noke Common and a small number of other sites on the Island where similar ground movement has occurred.

“The cost of this work will, of course, be met by Island Roads.”

Island Roads volunteers back at Needles Old Battery Volunteers from Island Roads returned to the Needles Old Battery for the third year running to help the National Trust with their annual winter maintenance programme.

As part of its volunteering scheme, Island Roads encourages employees to take two days off each year to give their time to support local good causes.

Five members of staff picked up their brushes to help paint the Winch Chamber, Shell Storeroom,

Royal Engineers Office, which now houses displays about the Fort’s fascinating past. They also painted inside the Old Battery’s tunnel which leads to the Search Light room overlooking the Needles Lighthouse.

Geoff Pidgeon, Samantha O’Rourke, Alex Brown, Joanna Westwood, Darren Vaughan, David Metcalfe, Fort Manager for the National Trust, said: “It was great to be joined by volunteers from Island Roads. Their help was invaluable because, to keep

the historic site in perfect condition for the thousands of people who visit each year, the list of maintenance jobs is very long!

“We’ve built up a great relationship with Island Roads over the years, not only through the volunteering they undertake but also through our close liaison during highways schemes near National Trust properties – such as Bembridge Windmill and roads around Newtown.”

Brighstone Christmas Tree Festival The ever-popular annual Brighstone Christmas Tree Festival will be held at seven different locations around the area from December 6 to 9, and will then continue at three of the venues until December 31.

This year marks the 22nd festival, which normally attracts over 7,000 people from all across the Island and the mainland, and over the years it has raised £120,000 for local and national charities.

The special ‘Lights of Love’ carol service at 7pm on Wednesday, December 5 at Brighstone Church, in aid of Mountbatten, will herald the start of the Festival. The tree

lighting will be performed by by Nigel Hartley, CEO of The Mountbatten Hospice, and also attending will be the Isle of Wight’s High Sheriff Mrs Gioia MinghellaGiddens, Councillor Lora Peacey-Wilcox, Chair of the IW Council, and other Council members.

The Festival provides pre-christmas fun and entertainment for all the family, with more than 200 beautiful ‘theme decorated’ Christmas trees on display at Brighstone Church, the Methodist Church, The Wilberforce Hall, The Three Bishops Pub, The Reading Rooms, Mottistone Church and the Isle of Wight Pearl.

The festival returns for its 22nd year.

In addition there will be the children’s trees in the library and on the Saturday and Sunday Santa will be in the Winter Wonderland at

the Exchange in New Road, halfway between the Parish Church and the Methodist Church For children there is a

competition for the best decorated mini Christmas tree. The trees can be purchased for just £2.50 from the Brighstone Community Library in North Street, which is open Tuesday 9.30am-12.30pm; Thursday 1.30pm-4pm and Saturday 10am–4pm Tel: (01983) 740446). Return the tree to the library by Tuesday, December 4. The competition will be judged during the Festival.

There is free admission to all concerts both during the Festival and into the following week, all in the Parish Church set against the backdrop of the trees. Other attractions include carol

singing, handbell ringing, Craft Fairs, Mini Market and lace making demonstrations.

Refreshments will include soup lunches on the Saturday and Crepes available on the Sunday in the Scout Centre between 11am and 4pm,with a free glass of mulled wine (while stocks last) in the Reading Rooms and Social Club on Friday, Saturday and Sunday between 12noon and 4pm, courtesy of the Isle of Wight Pearl.

A free Park and Ride will operate from the Isle of Wight Pearl and Brighstone Holiday Centre on the Military Road into Brighstone village with a further free shuttle service to and from Mottistone.

Come dancing

A crowd of enthusiastic dancers, many in splendid 17th and 18th century costumes, turned out for the annual Playford Ball in East Cowes earlier this month.

In 1651, influential music publisher John Playford released a collection of country dances and tunes entitled: The English Dancing Master. Also known as, Plaine and Easie Rules for the Dancing of Country

Dances. The dances proved to be extremely popular as they were easy and fun, by 1728 over a thousand dances in 27 editions had been published. The style of dance even influenced architecture, every large house needed a long ballroom to accommodate long dance sets.

Country dancing remains popular on the Isle of Wight. The folkonwight dance page lists several

groups meeting weekly and a number of ceilidhs and barn dances take place every year.

Local ceilidh band The Caulkheads, has been getting people dancing for 22 years.

They hold their annual barn dance on Friday, November 23 at Wootton Bridge Community Centre, Brannon Way, starting at 8pm.

Walks on the Island

Be adventurous - and enjoy a good stomp!

Whether you are adventurous, have plenty of stamina, or just want to take in the magnificent sights and sounds of the Isle of Wight, walking is a great way to meet your wishes.

In association with Visit Isle of Wight, the IW Observer brings you two more Island walks that might take your fancy. So there is still time to sort out your walking boots or shoes, and take in some healthy exercise before over-indulging in the Christmas season.

This week we spotlight a walk around Combley Great Wood, Ryde, and one that allows you to take in the picturesque village of Shorwell.

Combley Great Wood This is a walk for adventurous families, with the start and finish at Combley Road, Ryde, PO33 4DT. The distance of the walk covers about two miles, and depending on the speed you wish to walk, and how

long you want to take in the sights, it is likely to take between an hour and two hours.

Directions: Walking from the entrance of Combley Great Wood, locally known as Longround Rew, go along the permissive path until you reach a T junction at Deadman’s Brook. Take a right and meander through the woodland.

You will reach Combley Lane and Bridleway 19. Turn left on Bridleway 19 and go past the quarry towards Combley Farm. Once at Combley Farm turn left on to Bridleway 18.

As you reach Combley Great Wood look for a left turn back into the woodland. This will take you back to Deadman’s Brook. When you reach the now familiar T junction take a right and this will take you back to the start point.

Stomping about in Shorwell Well, it sounds fun, but be prepared! This stomp

covers a distance of some six miles, and will probably take between three and four hours to complete.

The start and finish point is at Russell Road, Shorwell PO30 3JT. Directions: As many of us know, Shorwell is a picturesque Island village with thatched cottages mostly built of stone. This walk takes you on a journey around the surrounding area which is some of the most fertile farm land found on the Island.

Start from Russell Road, Shorwell and walk west until you reach the corner where Russell Road and Fine Lane meet.

Take Bridleway 4 South to Wolverton Manor, a Jacobean manor house shaped like the letter E when viewed from above. As you walk past the house, you will also have gorgeous views of the surrounding farmland leading up to the Downs.

The footpath will take you onto Wolverton Lane, and from here you are looking

for a left hand turn along Doctors Lane heading to Samber Hill (Bridleway 22).

Continue to Atherfield Road and look for a left turn on to a path leading to Dungewood and Kingston (Byway 56).

As you pass Kingston Manor, join Sandy Lane for a short while then turn right on to Footpath 42. Head north passing Billingham Manor and join Bridleway 44 which will join Bridleway 15.

Wolverton Manor, home of the annual Jazz Festival.

Continue north until you meet Berry Shute. Look for Bridleway 13 on the left hand side of the road. Take Bridleway 13 leading to Bridleway 1, all the way to Farriers Way, Shorwell.

In the Garden

Grab winter with both hands When we lose the summer sun, what can we do to make our gardens a pleasant place to spend some time?

A sunny autumn border is much more uplifting than a garden full of prematurely “tidy” brown soil.

Think of this season as a planting opportunity to be grabbed with both hands; not only is there a fine choice of grasses and perennials to consider, but the often silver-sunlight of autumn adds sparkle to herbaceous borders.

As the sun lowers in the sky, it slants through airy stems picking up texture, silhouette and movement in fading light.

With the arrival of frost, too, the seed heads will sparkle and, if you’re lucky, hungry flocks of finches frisk through.

So this is the ideal time to plant, so pick a site that will be spotlit by the low sun.

Plant in threes at least, and balance those dominant golden yellows with strong foxy reds, purples, pinks, mulberries and deep blues.

Autumn is also daisy time, and the aster family is invaluable. Long before flowers appear, the tiny buds, the black stems, the whorls of leaf that unfold from sheathed cigarillo-like stems hold the eye.

Modern planting is airy by nature, so cloudlike heads, light umbels or bobbles should be part of the mix. In fertile ground the damson-red Eupatorium ‘Riesenschirm’ will reach six feet, and its dark stems and whorled foliage are a bonus earlier in the year. Vernonia fasciculata, an aster relative known as smooth ironweed, provides an irregular puff of violet, and both set off Helianthus ‘Lemon Queen’.

Every gardener should grow the three-feet-high bushy aster ‘Little Carlow’, with lavender-blue flowers that appear from red buds like a gas torch. Aster laevis ‘Calliope’ has paler, slightly ragged daisies, but it’s really grown for its substantial black presence. The floppier ‘Vasterival’ tends toward pink but the sooty foliage and buds flatter the confetti-coloured flowers.

Use yellow as your spinning thread but do opt for tight clump-formers such as the green-coned Rudbeckia laciniata ‘Herbstsonne’ and the lemon-yellow sunflower Helianthus ‘Lemon Queen’, rather than the rabid spreaders.

Like all sunflowers, the latter will chase the sun, so place it carefully and find dusky partners for both.

The following grasses are well-behaved and don’t run, or self-seed to nuisance levels in Britain.

Stipa gigantea, a tall golden oat grass, is early season but keeps a skeletal presence as it forms its Roman fountain of golden sparks. A tendency to untidiness can be fixed by removing ungainly stems.

If you’ve room enough, the July-flowering toetoe grass from New Zealand, Cortaderia richardii, will

produce one-sided feathery awns in shades of natural wool, above grey-green, sword-sharp foliage. Both shine in low light.

Cast an airy veil with Molinia caerulea subsp. arundinacea ‘Transparent’, which provides a mist of darkish beads.

Miscanthus sinensis is the most essential of all grasses, although some varieties are grown for foliage, not their plumed flower. The fine-tined, variegated green and cream ‘Morning Light’, for instance, and the thicker leaved brash white and green ‘Cosmopolitan’ are for foliage. A favourite, with light green leaves subtly banded in gold, is ‘Pünktchen’, but even in good summers the flower heads are hardly noticeable here. ‘Ferner Osten’ does produce lots of wine-red plums, although these will turn mink-brown within three to four weeks, whatever the weather.

By threading grasses through your late-season borders you’ll find that the dying of the light has never looked more beautiful.

The ongoing struggle to secure skilled staff has resulted in a boom for UK recruitment as employers turn to specialists for staffing support. The KPMG and REC UK Report on Jobs, released last week, highlights a national increase in permanent and temporary posts being filled via recruitment firms.

Neil Carberry, Chief Executive at the REC points out that failure to upskill workforces internally has impacted this need for external support: “Skills shortages are a long-standing feature of our economy. They affect the ability of employers to grow and create jobs. That we have shortages in key skilled roles like IT, engineering and health is a sign that the right

training and support is not in place for people to progress into these jobs from lower skilled work.

He continues ... “As we head towards winter we are once again seeing potential shortages of nursing, medical and social care staff.

Working with recruiters to address this should be a Government policy priority - without access to agency workers key front-line services could be put under threat.”

I launched in June 2017 using my experience within executive change management to support local businesses. During periods of change, there usually isn’t a need or a budget for a full-time member of staff so having a flexible consultant to guide and shape is ideal to get things done.

How have you progressed the business?

I started with lots of projects across lots of companies, now I work with a smaller portfolio which is more effective. I thought I’d need to rely on mainland contracts, but when GDPR legislation came to the fore, local businesses needed support. GDPR opened the door to clients who now trust me with projects from product manufacturing to operational system rollout.

My business keeps evolving.

Have you changed since launching Purple Patch?

I’m much happier. The work is rewarding as I am utilising my skills and experience to help others succeed. I gain a lot of satisfaction from being an integral

part of the wider business community, I feel connected which is something I didn’t experience in previous roles.

What are the challenges of working in your role?

My role is all about people and change, and people don’t like change. Managing resistance to new ideas is complex and needs to be handled sensitively to get results. I adapt my approach to suit each individual, always asking the question “What do YOU need to succeed?”

What are the best things about your job?

It doesn’t feel like a job, just me doing my thing. I have freedom and flexibility so I can indulge my training skills too, mentoring and coaching to help individuals identify positive mental attitudes. I love being a role model for my daughter, showing her that by working hard and staying focused you can use your skills and you don’t have to sacrifice your career to achieve family goals.

What does your working day look like?

Every day is different but they all start with the school run, which is less

polished than I’d like! Then I switch to work mode, often starting with meetings to set up the day and allow me time to troubleshoot immediate issues.

Then there are networking events, consultations, 1-21 coaching, and mentoring sessions, then back to the school run (and walk the dog) before settling into the office in the afternoon.

What skills do you need to succeed in your role?

My coaching skills have been invaluable and if you work in change management empathy is essential. You have to be able to turn someone’s vision into a plan, to see the bigger picture on behalf of your clients, then communicate to the team in an accessible way.

What advice do you have for anyone looking for work right now?

Freelance work is great if your skills don’t match available jobs. Ask yourself “What problem can I solve?”

Three teams remain undefeated at the top of Division One of the Leslies Motors Indoor League following the second week of matches at Cowes Enterprise College last week.

Ryde, Brading and EPP have won their opening two games, and Brading showed they are serious contenders by hitting the highest score of the evening as they beat Prison Officers by 100 runs. Brading’s score of 171-2 was dominated by not out scores from Alan Johns (26), Mark Hartnell (45) and Chris Higgins (26) and two wickets for Simon Moxlow made sure the Officers fell well short in their reply of 71-5.

Ryde maintained their great start by beating Shanklin & Godshill 1 by 65 runs. Despite Mackenzie Wright taking 2-27, 25 not out from Ryde’s Dave Pratt, 26 not out from Liam Ringer and 36 from Mark Oatley took their side to 132-4.

Only Seb Egerton-Read (24) was able to put up some resistance as Shanklin & Godshill 1 finished on 67 all out. The tightest game saw EPP overcome Northwood by

just nine runs. Tommy Barton scored 45 not out as EPP made 132-3.

Jordan Langdon hit 36 but Northwood fell just short on 123-5.

In Divivision Two Ryde School are the early pacesetters following their narrow win against Cowes, who scored 108-3.

The batting experience of Stuart Gurney (26no) saw Ryde School home by two wickets. The IW Disability Cricket side played their first league match of the season but fell to a 67-run defeat at the hands of Shanklin & Godshill 2.

Horse Trials to return to Osborne The Isle of Wight has suddenly become an integral part of the eventing calendar, following a decision by the BEDE Events team to stage the London Capital & Finance Osborne Horse Trials at

Osborne House for a second successive year.

The event will form part of a series of similar attractions across the country, and plans for the spectacle are already underway.

Horses and riders from all parts of the UK are expected to compete, and a host of mainland spectators are set to give the Island’s tourism industry a boost.

However, it will prove a welcome respite for one local rider, Sarah Louise Holmes who invariably has to take herself and her three horses across the Solent by ferry to take part in such big competitions. Now she can display her skills on virtually her own doorstep.

Stuart Buntine, Director of BEDE Events, said: “Successfully running an

event on the Isle of Wight was a huge highlight and we look forward to doing it all again. It was years in the planning but the amazing feedback suggests it was worth the wait.”

Events Chair, Diana Bown added: “This showcase event is something really special and we can’t wait to be back on site!”.

This summer’s equestrian triathlon proved a thrilling competition, culminating in the cross country, set in the spectacular valley of Osborne House. With many of the country’s top riders making the trip across the Solent, a day at Osborne Horse Trials proved one to remember for whole families, who now know they can enjoy a similar experience in 2019.

Dressage event in memory of Sue Lake Farm Equitation Centre played host to the Isle of Wight Riding Club’s annual dressage competition in memory of Sue Lightbown, who passed away seven years ago.

The event is held as a tribute to Sue who, as the Club’s chairperson, was an active supporter of its members and devoted a large part of her life to the club. Each competitor wore a buttonhole in her honour and Sue’s son, Wayne Lightbown, provided the rosettes, as he does each year.

The event also honoured

the centenary of Armistice Day at 11am. As usual, entries were very good and the standard of riding high, commented by both the mainland judge, Ciss Brown and Island-based judge, Martine Harbour.

Wayne also provided two gorgeous sashes - a champion and reserve champion. These were awarded to the riders who gained the highest and second highest scores over the day, calculated by taking an average score in each test. The winner was Mollie Brown on Briars Anniversary and reserve was Luke Wilson on his own Southborne Celtic

Charm.

Hampshire’s Ageas Bowl, which will be used next summer for the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

IW Cricket Board urges: join World Cup Club!

Isle of Wight Cricket Board has announced a call to action for all local clubs and cricket organisations to apply to become a Cricket World Cup Club and ‘be part of something bigger’.

The initiative has been designed to help grassroots clubs further connect with their local community through family fun-based activity and help bring the excitement of the 2019 Cricket World Cup (CWC 2019) into their clubhouse.

As the CWC 2019 returns to England and Wales for the first time in 20 years, the

ICC and ECB aim to engage one million kids throughout the tournament, with clubs given the opportunity to apply to become a Cricket World Cup Club.

And be able to put on a family day and celebrate and engage a new audience through the excitement of the CWC 2019.

As part of the initiative, clubs are being asked to run a weekend of child and familybased activities, It is hoped this will help to better connect with the local community and engage a younger generation with

sport.

This could be anything, from kids’ coaching sessions, parent/child matches, or even a ‘Bring a Friend’ day.

The aim of these family days is to get more kids involved in the game and to help clubs showcase themselves to a wider audience.

Clubs who apply will have access to official marketing material to assist with the promotion of their event – which they will be able to use in schools, on social media and in the local area.

Cricket World Cup Champions, the lead

volunteer at the club, will receive official World Cup merchandise to reward them for their efforts.

Friday, June 7 to Sunday, June 9, 2019 will be the focus weekend for celebrations, although club family days can run over any weekend during the World Cup which runs from May 30 to July 14.

Furthermore, a Cricket World Cup Club Fund has also been launched with at least the first 2,000 affiliated clubs who register, having the opportunity to receive £1,000 to help digitise or upgrade catering facilities.

The Fund has been set up to help Clubs install new broadband, boost their clubhouse’s audio-visual capabilities, or transform their catering facilities to assist with their CWC 2019 family day.

ECB Regional Head of Participation and Growth for South Central region, Andy Lees said: “Within the South Central region, we’re well aware of the fantastic opportunity that the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup presents.

“The importance of seizing upon this once in a

generation event to continue to get more young people passionate about our game.

“The Cricket World Cup Club initiative created by the ICC and ECB is a golden opportunity and one that I encourage as many local clubs in the Isle of Wight to sign up for.

The Fund and CWC 2019 tournament represents a platform which we can utilise to grow a whole new generation of fans and players, boys and girls who will be playing at diverse, family-friendly clubs.”

Newclose Cricket Ground near Newport, which could be the temporary home for Hampshire CCC next season, and be involved in the Cricket World Cup Club scheme.

Newclose to the rescue?

Newclose County Cricket Ground, on the outskirts of Newport, is on standby to host several Hampshire first team matches next season.

The IW Observer exclusively revealed last week that discussions are already taking place between officials of Newclose and Hampshire CCC to try to secure a four-day County Championship match on the Isle of Wight in May.

Although Hampshire Second XI have used Newclose in the past, it would be the first time since 1962 that a first class fixture has taken place on the Island.

But now it is understood Hampshire CCC are also considering Newclose as a temporary home while their own Ageas Bowl is being used for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. The Island venue and Basingstoke are the two

venues under consideration.

Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove, commenting on the unavailability of the Ageas Bowl for part of next summer, said: “We are looking very favourably at Newclose on the Isle of Wight and at Basingstoke.

“Our staff have been in touch with both Newclose and Basingstoke management but no deals are done yet.”

Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, which is the English Cricket Board’s HQ and will play an integral part in next year’s Cricket World Cup.

Whitecroft and Barton Sports 3 Binstead COB 0 Whitecroft and Barton Sports maintained their unbeaten record to stay hot on the heels of Northwood St Johns in the battle for Harwoods Renault IW League, Division One honours.

Skipper Harry Ovnik led by example, heading W&B into the lead after only two minutes of their clash with Binstead & COB at Sandy Lane.

The home side pushed to add to their advantage, but were held at bay by Binstead until the half hour mark. Ironically, that was

when the visitors won their first corner, and in a quick counter-attack Josh Appell raced clear to double W&B’s advantage.

In a fairly scrappy second half, Binstead had more of the play and put W&B under a bit of pressure.

But they were unable to find the net, and conceded a third on 70 minutes when Appell scored his second with a superb strike.

The victory kept W&B just a point behind Northwood St Johns at the top of the table, but with a game in hand.

Northwood also picked up maximum points, edging home 3-2 against East Cowes

Sports at the GKN Sports Ground.

The most amazing scoreline of the day came in the match between Ventnor and Brading Town, who shared the points and 16 goals!

Aaron Burford scored four goals for Brading, with Robert Gee (2) Matt Oatley and Jake Keetch also on target.

Pan Sports and Sandown shared the points in a sixgoal thriller in Division One, with the Sandown goals coming from Ben Field, Jake Lester and Dean Johnson.

In the only other Division One game, West Wight proved too strong for bottom

club Osborn Coburg, running out 5-2 winners.

Seaview and East Cowes Vics A featured in the most exciting clash in Division Two, with Vics just edging home 6-5.

Division Two leaders Bembridge were in Isle of Wight Memorial Cup action, hitting six past AFC Wootton without reply.

Northwood Reserves and Shanklin Reserves shared eight goals in their Combination One clash, with Dan Field scoring a hat-trick for the visitors, with James Turner scoring their other goal.

Vics hit for seven

Laverstock and Ford 7 East Cowes Vics 0 Boss Steve Brougham reckons the past couple of games in charge of Vics have produced the weirdest scorelines he has experienced in his entire managerial career.

Vics went down 5-0 to Folland Sports in their previous encounter before conceding seven without reply at Laverstock and Ford. Brougham insisted: “Obviously when you concede that amount of goals you don’t really expect to win a match. But the irony of it is that in both games we created enough chances to have scored just as many goals as the opposition.

“In this latest game it was end to end stuff, and not as if we were outplayed. If we had not had a shot at goal and lost 7-0 then I would have been really worried, but if we had taken out chances we could have scored seven ourselves!”

At least Brougham managed to ease his keeper crisis before the game by signing Karl Steinborn-Busse from

Fareham, with the manager saying: “I felt quite sorry for him because he conceded seven goals in his first game, but he actually did all right for us. I’m sure he will do well for us in future games.”

He added: “When you lose 7-0 obviously the first port of call is the manager, but the players have also got to look at themselves, because things are not right in certain areas. We have just got to regroup, knuckle down and get on with it. We are still in mid-table, but there is no doubt we have to improve as a team when it comes to defending, because the lads seem to get up for certain gams but not others.

“I take the rap for the results, but it’s frustrating that when the players put their minds to it, they can compete well against any team in the division.”

Vics face another tough test tomorrow when they host Romsey Town, who are third in the table. The Island side will be without skipper Joe Butcher and ji Nash through injury.

Wet and wild for Yarmouth sailing With 18 knots gusting to above 25 it was always going to be a wild and occasionally wet racing for members of Yarmouth Sailing Club in their Winter Allcomers’ series.

The Feva with Patrick Tate on the helm and Andre Usborne as his crew made a sharp start closely followed

by Graeme Bowen in a Scow, Tom Ainsworth in a Pico and Bryan Locke in a Laser. The four swapped tacks until the faster boats started to get away before gusty conditions caused spectacular capsizes.

Tom in his Pico finished first but once the handicaps were applied Graeme, Alan and Rob took the top three slots. As race two started, the fleet was hit but a bomb-blast of a gust that flattened the Feva and the Laser, but the Scows

and the Pico managed to stay upright. Tom in the Pico sailed superbly, easing away to finish with a big lead. Graeme led the Scows home with Alan and Liz close behind. Once the handicapper had crunched the numbers Graeme took first with Tom second and Alan third.

The wind was slightly lighter on Sunday. In the first race Graeme finished with a comfortable lead with Alan and Liz some distance behind. In race two, Liz got off to a superb start and led the fleet round the first couple of marks but got into a pickle at ‘C’ buoy, for both Graeme and Alan to speed past. Graeme made the most of the conditions and built up a comfortable lead with Alan safely tucked in second to finish in that order.

Triggs strike secures win for impressive Newport Whitchurch Utd 0 Newport 1 New signing Jared Cousins made an immediate impact as Newport continued their good run in the Wessex League, Division One with a victory at Whitchurch that was more convincing than the one-goal margin suggested.

The Port were ahead as early as the seventh minute when Cousins outpaced his marker and pulled the ball back for Liam Triggs to fire home.

Although that proved to be the only goal, the Island side

were dominant throughout, with manager Andy Sampson enthusing: “Our effort and team performance was one of the best we have put in this season, even though we had a few players missing.

“We thoroughly deserved the win. In the first half we played some really good stuff, and could have gone in at half-time three or four up.

“We were ripping them to bits, but their keeper made some good saves, and our finishing could have been a bit better. But we were all over them.”

Sampson was delighted with Cousins’ contribution, saying: “I think Joe is a good signing. He’s got pace and is quite direct - he fitted in really well.”

Port suffered a setback when keeper Gary Streeter went down to smother a shot on 35 minutes, and suffered a chest muscle injury.

He could not continue after the break, so Lewis Wright volunteered to take over in goal, with 16-year-old Reece Wren going on as the midfield substitute.

admirably between the posts and was only called into serious action once to tip a goalbound shot on to the bar. Louie Fleming had a great chance to put the game beyond reach when he raced away, rounded the keeper but the ball bobbled and his shot went over.

Cousins picked up an injury midway through the second period, but should be fit for tomorrow’s home game against Stoneham, the only unbeaten team in the division, who are fourth in the table, but with games in hand.

Ton-up Cox bags top award The 2018 Isle of Wight Cricket Board Junior Cricket presentations took place at Ryde School, to celebrate the achievements of the club competition winners, the county players and sides’ successes over the 2018 season. Cricket Board chair Phil Mew welcomed over 90 parents and players to the evening and Andy Woodward, IW Head Coach, was the MC. The winner of the Senior Player of the Year, who was awarded the Bill and Val Palmer Cup went to Dan Cox who not only scored his first century (102no) for the County against Dorset but showed great dedication and commitment to playing and training.

by Oscar Vandercasteele who developed greatly throughout the season and played a vital role in the successful U13 team and also played up an age group for the U15s.

The Graham Sprack Cup was present by Graham’s son Will Sprack to Becky Jude from the disability side for completing her first full county season with the Island’s soft ball team, and making great strides in her cricket development over the season. Special mention went to Zeph Wells who joined a small select group of Island players who have represented the South West at the Bunbury Festival.

He was also selected to play against the West Indies U15 for the region. There

were individual awards presented for each county team and medals for each playing member of the team.

Individual County Team Winners were: Under 11 – Sam Mills and Daniel Attrill. Under13 – Rory Taylor.

Under15 – Ollie Morgan and Will Mew. Under17 - Ben Attrill, Dan Cox and Liam Shore. Disability - Kayton Evans, Matt Rice and Martin Turvey. The Board thanked its kit supplier Gray-Nicolls for supplying prizes for the presentations.

Camp Hill Bowls Club awards night Golfers raise funds for Royal British Legion In teams of four, 92 members of Shanklin and Sandown Golf Club set off in pursuit of the Royal British Legion’s Commemorative Golf Medal on Armistice Sunday, November 11.

At 11am club members gathered in the car park to observe the two minutes silence to honour the fallen of the Great War and the loss of those in the conflicts that have so tragically followed, and at 11.15am the klaxon sounded and the Am-Am competition began.

The winners in the Ladies’ Section were Chris Gould, Angela Lassey, Linda Piche and Viv Williams with 108 points. In the Mixed, the winners were Debbie Berry, Shawn Ford, Neil Hallett and Hazel Smith with 122 points

and, the winners of the RBL Commemorative Golf Medal, with a score of 123 points, was the Men’s team comprising Chris Beard, Paul Hawkins, Peter Rush and Mark Trueman.

The event, under the auspices of the Royal British Legion, and organised by Club Captain Neil Hallett and Ladies’ Captain Debbie Berry, raised over £900 for the RBL. The club’s Tetlow Salvers Mixed Greensomes event was held recently with a small but exclusive field.

The winners were Terry Harris and Penny Last with a brilliant score of 43 points.

Second were Stef Brochocki and Chris Gould on 42 points (on countback).

Ryde A keep up pressure for Table Tennis top spot Ryde A lead Division One of the IW Table Tennis Association after a convincing 9-1 victory against Rookley Rhinos, with only Tom Johnson of Rhinos managing to score a win against Roger Nevell.

Junior champion Hugh Idle from Ryde Royals continues his good form in his first season in Division One with a win against seasoned campaigner Paul Freeborn of Newport Vics A, with Vics A winning 8-2.

Cadet Champion Sean Joyce and dad Barry Joyce of Vics B were both unlucky in their matches against Timothy Giles of Ryde Raiders, having long five-set battles with Giles who eventually came through to win.

Ryde Raiders took the match 8-2.

In Division Two only two matches were played; Havenstreet Hooters demolished St Lawrence YoYo Lizards 9-1 to extend their lead at the top of the table. In the other match, recently promoted Newport Vics C gained a credible draw against Ryde Rascals; Sam Pascoe of Vics won an exciting five-setter against John Featherstone and there was another fine performance from Trevor Percival who won all three of his games, and teamed up with John Linington to take the deciding doubles for Vics.

Division Three continues to be the most hotly contested division in the league this

year, with Ryde Rockers leading on 35 points and four teams on 29 points.

However, Newport Vics D have a game in hand and look possible contenders to push for first place.

Players on 100 per cent include Spike Hughes of Ryde Rockers and Martin Dove of Ryde Rebels, with Neil Blake of Rockers on over 90 per cent.

There were a number of close matches, including the one between the ladies of Ryde Rapscallions and newcomers Wootton Wolves, whose Trevor Jones won all of his matches to claim a draw.

Wootton’s other team, the Wombats, drew with Ryde Rebels, who consist of seasoned

campaigner Martin Dove and his young grandsons Ethan and Joseph Millward, who both won their first league games in a close fought match.

Island bowlers win through in Over 60s The Isle of Wight Indoor Bowls Club secured a fine first round victory in the men’s National Over 60s Double Rink competition against Palmerston of Fareham.

The match was played on the basis of one home rink and one away, and the Islanders’ success means they will now face Victory B of Portsmouth in the next round on November 27.

But it proved a stern test for the IW club who were behind in the first half of the game and trailed by eight shots.

At this stage the away four of John Wilkins, Phil Brooks, Peter Furmidge and Ron Leleux were five shots adrift against Martin Ellis’s four, while the home rink of Alan

Cawdell, Richard Jeffery, Ian Morey and Bob Mortlock were three shots down to Cyril Friend’s quartet.

But they staged a fine comeback as Leleux’s rink took command of their game and conceded only two more shots while scoring 13 themselves to secure a good win by 18 shots to 12.

The home game was close throughout but the Islanders edged home by 16 shots to 14 to ensure overall victory.

In the third round of the Ladies’ Champion of Champions, Gay Allen travelled to the Palmerston Club to take on Tracy Farrington.

In a close match throughout, the home player succeeded by 21 shots to 18.

The IW Club took on Bembridge in the third annual match for the Friendly Trophy in memory of Geoff Laker a former ‘true club’ member of both clubs.

The Indoor Club had triumphed in the two previous meetings but this time it was Bembridge who secured a 120 shots to 106 win.

Dee Laker presented the trophy to them.

The scores of the rinks were (Island skips names first): Carol Jones 13, Alan Cox 25; Colin Hoath 28, Val Newton 14; Roy Jemson 22, Gay Allen 17; Bob Powell 15, Anne Bernard 28; Janet Ince 10, Norman Cooper 19; John Ince 18, John Pearce 17.

Hurricanes short on men but still see off Purley Purley John Fisher 15 points, Sandown & Shanklin 31 Sandown & Shanklin travelled to old foes Purley John Fisher with just 14 men, but still progressed to the round three of the RFU Junior Vase.

The mood was not ruined by being a man down for the entire 80 minutes, nor was it dampened after an electric start by the Surrey based side, who took a 5-0 lead.

The visitors could have easily let their heads drop but were soon threatening the Purley defence, and Martin Richomme scored for 5-5. The hosts struck back almost immediately, again using the Hurricanes’ narrow defence to their advantage and getting around the outside for 10 - 5.

rallied and Man of the Match Matt Miselbach fed Jack Wedderkop who was causing the Purley defence issues with some great lines against the grain. The ball was spun wide to Luke Wedderkop and after a high tackle stopped him short of the line, the referee awarded a penalty try for 10-12 to the Hurricanes.

Purley regained the lead before Henry Bagnall found space to score. with Sam Flux missing the conversion.

As the game approached the final quarter, the relentless defensive work from the Hurricanes kept the home side at bay, then Chiverton fed Jack Wedderkop with a smart offload, and Jack sped away to dot down under the posts. Flux converted and pushed the Hurricanes into a nine-point lead with less than 15 minutes remaining.

Remaining clam and cool, the 14 men from Sandown & Shanklin worked their way back up the field, and Flux attempted to kick a penalty to end the game. But the ball struck the post,and bounced down to Charles Little who smartly followed the kick in and stepped past the last defender to score. With Zak Chiverton slotting the conversion, the Hurricanes were victorious.

The attention for the 1st XV tomorrow (Sat) turns back to the Hampshire Premier, as they welcome third placed Fordingbridge RFC to the Fairway, kick off 2.30pm.

The 2nd XV look to continue their good form, with an away trip to Alton RFC 2nd XV, who sit below the Hurricanes in the table.

Farnham 4thXV 29 points, Ventnor 2ndXV 5 In torrential conditions, only 11 Mighty Lions of Ventnor Second XV travelled up to Farnham for a rearranged fixture. Bolstered by former Islander, now Andover player, Jason Corney and given two players by the opposition, Ventnor looked to get into the game very quickly as they only arrived off the coach five minutes before kick off.

From the kick off, it was obvious the conditions were going to have a large effect on the game with scrums following handling errors taking a lot of time.

Ventnor’s seven-man pack held back the full eightman pack of Farnham with strong performances from Ventnor’s front three of

Adam Pratt, captain Jac Stemmet and returning Joe Pettifer. It took a while before Farnham’s mauling saw them over in the corner for an unconverted try. This was followed shortly after by another score by the home team.

Ventnor were very much in the fight though. AJ Wells Man of the Match Chris Hill, in his last appearance for the club this season, broke free from scrum half with the move finished off with Ed Blake dragging his opposite number over the line for Ventnor’s only score.

Strong tackling from Cory Turner, Justinas Urbonas and Harry Colson held Ventnor’s line well. They, twinned with carries from father and son, Scott and Gareth Gough, and Dan Noyes kept the game

Late goal denies Yachtsmen Cowes Sports 1 Tadley Calleva 1 Cowes Sports looked to be on course for victory over Tadley in atrocious conditions when they took the lead with just 10 minutes of their Wessex League Premier game remaining.
