SOLUTIONS START HERE

Bankruptcy

WILL I LOSE EVERYTHING I HAVE IF I FILE BANKRUPTCY?

KELLY KARSTAEDT

Karstaedt and Stanko, P.A. 301 W. Bay St., #14132, Jacksonville, FL 32202 (904) 217-5159 JaxCorporateCounsel.com

I am often approached by individuals who are interested in giving back to the community by starting a nonprofit, but are not sure where to start. If you have been thinking about starting a not-for-profit organization, below are several things you should consider: • What is your mission? Every nonprofit must have a mission statement that clearly defines its purpose. You need to know who you are serving and what you want to offer them. • How are you obtaining funding and materials? It is important to figure out where you will get your funding, such as individual donations, corporate sponsorship or both. Knowing this will assist in determining your IRS designation, as well as figuring out if you must register with your state government to solicit funds. • What will your management structure look like? You need to consider if you will have a full board providing

all oversight, a CEO and/or staff. This is important during the formation process. • What is your overall goal? Before you start putting your business plan into action, stop and think about what you really want this nonprofit to do. Often, after careful consideration, people realize they either do not need a new organization to accomplish their goal or find out what they want to do cannot be done through a nonprofit. If you would like to learn more about how to get started, or are operating and in need of legal advice, contact our office for a consultation.

Nothing could be further from the truth. In Florida, there are exemptions to protect your house, your automobile, your personal belongings, retirement plans, wages, life insurance policies, pre-paid college plans and more. You are entitled to keep $1,000 in personal property and another $1,000 for a motor vehicle. If you do not own a home or there is no equity in your homestead property, you are entitled to keep an extra $4,000. These amounts are in addition to the exemptions for your homestead, insurance policies and retirement plans which are normally 100 percent exempt.

YOUR LEGAL CORNER

Michelle T. Fanger, PLLC.

P.O. Box 8902, Jacksonville, FL 32239 • 904-458-8275 • MFangerLaw.com

BUZZ: When did you start you career in law school? Michelle Fanger: It started with me attending Florida Coastal School of Law in Jacksonville in 2008, but it was actually when I was a young girl when I realized I wanted to be a lawyer. This has led me to start my very own law firm in October of 2015. BUZZ: Why did you choose to go into law? Did anyone have an influence on your decision? MF: I always had a desire to become a lawyer because I have a passion to help others. As an immigrant myself, I feel drawn to helping others that were in my situation. That is why one of my main focuses is on immigration law and family law. The person that influenced me would probably be my childhood teacher. They said I talked a lot, and having that quality would help me to become a great lawyer. BUZZ: What do you think sets you apart from other law firms in Jacksonville? MF: I think my need for just wanting to help people is what sets me apart. I’m more about making my clients feel safe and being an open ear for them. I want my clients to feel a part of the family. My goal is to just meet their needs the best way I can. BUZZ: Where do you see your firm in 5 years? What would be the main goal? MF: My hope is for all individuals to have access to a lawyer in their time of need. In 5 years, I see me becoming a well-known name in the community as a helpful, interactive lawyer. the information presented herein reflects only the opinion of the author and not iwantabuzz entertainment magazine, it’s owner, or publisher. all information in iwantabuzz entertainment magazine is for educational purposes only. it is not a substitute for any advice given to you by your lawyer.

Did You Know The Bulger Firm TheBulgerFirm.com

Who gets the dog in the divorce? Unfortunately, pets are sometimes used as bargaining chips in contentious divorces, and spouses sometimes fight for ownership of the pets out of spite or to demonstrate control. In this event, mediation, arbitration or negotiation can be used to solve this problem, and the services of an attorney can help in this situation. Under Florida’s equitable distribution laws, a judge has the authority to make a determination as to the division of property in the event of a divorce. Therefore, after the divorce, a pet will be owned by either one party or the other. Visitation rights or support payments will not be granted for the benefit of a pet. LINDSEY BROCK

SHANNON DAY

Rumrell, McLeod & Brock

Law Offices of John Phillips

Our flexibility and adaptability as a small, some would say “niche,” firm. We can better adapt to the clients’ needs. We don’t have any bureaucratic inertia.

We handle personal injury, family law and criminal law. We focus on giving back to the community and believe everyone has a right to a defense.

HOLLY HOWANITZ

BRIAN F. MOORE

Wicker, Smith, O’Hara, McCoy & Ford, P.A.

Law Offices of Sheftall & Associates

We’re known as a trial firm. There are a lot less civil trials than there used to be overall in Florida, but we make sure all of our people are trained to try cases, especially more complex cases.

We’re small, but nimble and can go against the bigger firms and win. We get results. We’re also a collegial firm that is able to live and breathe our cases. We develop close relationships with our clients where we can represent them in the best way possible.

LEGAL PERSPECTIVE Aaron Irving IntegrityLawJax.com

What brought you to Jacksonville? AI: Law school at Florida Coastal. I had the choice between University of Miami Law School and here, and I chose here. What advice would you give someone considering going to law school? AI: Make sure it’s something you’re truly going to be passionate about. You have to understand that you’re going to work extremely hard and won’t always be appreciated for it. You get into the field to help people and you have to remind yourself of that all the time. 12

What areas of practice does your firm focus on?

We are a title & escrow closing firm in both the commercial and residential areas. We can support the real estate process from precontracting to closing.

How did you get started as a title & escrow firm?

I was a licensed broker for 10 years before I went to law school. After law school, I went to work for a commercial broker who focused on hotel/ motel closings and was consistently asked by friends and associates to help them with other commercial and residential transactions and closings. After about a year, I went ahead and became a preferred attorney with Old Republic and have been doing commercial and residential transactions and closings ever since.

It is not expensive and usually very reasonable to have the contract reviewed or have a professional draw up the purchasing agreement, putting all parties at ease. ARTS UNLEASHED

Aaron Shelton

Sinisa Saratlic

AaronSheltonArtwork.com

SinisaGallery.com

Aaron Shelton has been drawn to the arts from a young age. While at UNF, he travelled to Croatia on scholarship for art workshops while also accepting the role of lead assistant on the Sky mural for the UNF Wellness Center. After graduation and some traveling, he continued exploring his work. This led him to being accepted into the Azule Art Studio for residency. There he spent time fine tuning his technique and style— coined by Austrian artist Voka called spontaneous realism.

Sinisa Saratlic was born in 1954 in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He graduated from the University of Sarajevo, Department of Architectural studies, with a B.S. in Architecture.

The style is defined as abstract art created from a realistic image using various color schemes and brush strokes. Shelton has begun manipulating this spontarealism style with his own natural style, making it more vibrant and bold.

He has exhibited his paintings, graphics and drawings at numerous exhibits throughout former Yugoslavia and the US. His paintings are represented in galleries in Sarajevo, Belgrade, Dubrovnik, Korcula and other cities. Many of his artworks are included in private collections in Europe and the US. “I love art, and I love architecture and I have always just followed my heart in that way,” said Sinisa Saratlic. “My art is celebration of concept of inspiration. Everything we see is a manifestation of divine energy and I believe in divine power that controls all life. When I look at beauty, I am inspired!”

ARTS IN THE KNOW West Side Story WHEN: July 21-30 WHEN: July 21-30 WHERE: Nathan H. Wilson Center for the Arts WEBSITE: FSCJArtistSeries.org

The Summer Musical Theatre Experience (SMTE) provides the opportunity for local area high school students to work hands-on with some of the highest recognized local theatre professionals at the FSCJ Nathan H. Wilson Center for the Arts. The Florida State College at Jacksonville High School Summer Musical Theatre Experience is celebrating its 12th year providing theatre opportunities to 7th-12th graders in the First Coast area. This summer, more than 70 student performers and technicians will train with professional theatre artists in preparation for the production of West Side Story. From the first notes to the final breath, West Side Story is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. Arthur Laurents’ book remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever. The score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim is widely regarded as one of the best ever written. The world’s greatest love story takes to the streets in this landmark Broadway musical that is one of the theatre’s finest accomplishments. Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” is transported to modern-day New York City as two young, idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the American Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time. He previously starred in, and executive produced, the TBS sitcom “The Bill Engvall Show.” Bill was part of the enormously successful “Blue Collar Comedy” concert films, which sold over nine million units and received a Grammy nomination. He also starred on the WB’s hit sketch comedy show Blue Collar TV and in several solo specials for Comedy Central. In 2012, he reunited with Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy on the “Them Idiots Whirled Tour,” which aired as a special on CMT. Click, Clack, Moo Oct. 20 • 10:30 a.m. Cows that type? Hens on strike! Whoever heard of such a thing! When his granddaughter Jenny comes for a visit, Farmer Brown declares the farm a “tech-free zone.” He puts her laptop in the cold barn along with the shivering cows who use her computer to type messages requesting blankets. “No way,” replies Farmer Brown. “No blankets!” So the cows go on strike and the chickens join the cows in solidarity. No blankets: no milk, no eggs! Will Farmer Brown give in to the animals’ demands? Will Jenny get her computer back? Find out in a hilariously “mooooo-ving” new musical about negotiation and compromise, based on the Caldecott Honor Book by Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin. 16

Jumping Around Jax Sunscreen Tips for Hot Summer Months There always seem to be sunscreen studies showing us products that are good, bad, have too many chemicals, or not enough protection. The best ways to avoid a burn are somewhat obvious but certainly still effective, such as finding shade or covering up with clothing. Sunglasses and hats are great to protect the face and eyes, and planning around the sun by going outside early or later in the day will help prevent sunburn. One helpful tip is to use sunscreen of at least 30 SPF. Although a higher SPF is good for a better chance of coverage, sunscreen must always be reapplied every two hours. A sunscreen with SPF 50 does not guarantee longer protection. Some recommended brands are Alba Botanica Very Emollient and Mustela Sunscreen Lotion. You can feel good applying these natural sunscreens to yourself and little ones for the summer. They contain quality ingredients such as zinc, titanium dioxide and aloe vera. If more research and sunscreen education, visit EWG.org. Enjoy your summer weather without the burn! Upload your event to iwantaBUZZ.com’s Online calendar.

HEALTH

Be Well: Soak up the Sun

HEALTHY TAKE:

Making Healthy Choices at Summer BBQs

HEAT STROKE AND EXHAUSTION: KNOW THE SIGNS

When the grills fire up, it can become easy to lose focus and stray from even the best-laid nutrition and menu plans. The River City is already experiencing all the sun, high temperatures and humidity the season has to offer. The sunny skies make for beautiful beach weather and of course, many of us still perform our fitness routines outside. That makes it extra important to be mindful of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. With heat exhaustion comes elevated heart rate, heavy perspiration, dizziness, nausea and cramps. Headaches and cold skin can also be symptoms. Combat heat exhaustion by getting out of the sun and heat, rehydrating and bringing down the overall body temperature. If not treated, heat exhaustion can turn to heat stroke.

Head for the fresh stuff: Raw and roasted veggies, salads (limit the mayo-based dressings) and fruit salads are where it’s at. Fill up your plate!

Four Things Everyone Needs for Sun Safety Spend your summer in the sun! Here at the BUZZ, we want you to stay safe, too! No matter how you slice it, the Jacksonville sun is strong. Doses of Vitamin D from the source are great for mood and energy boosting, but it’s also important to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. Go to the beach, pool or outdoor shopping area with the family for some fun. Put on broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 15 before you go outside, even on slightly cloudy or cool days. Don’t forget to put a thick layer on all parts of exposed skin. Get help for hard-to-reach places like your back. Remember, sunscreen works best when combined with other options to prevent UV damage. Mineral-based sunscreen – Choose a sunscreen with an SPF in the 30s that can stand up to water and perspiration. Be sure to reapply hourly for best results.

Watch the cocktails: Sugary drinks like margaritas and daiquiris can add lots of unwanted calories to your day. Look for simpler drinks with less mixers and sugar, or hydrate with some fruitinfused water. Stick to the lean proteins: Skip the buns and bread and go straight for the meat. But most of all, enjoy and have fun!

ON BUZZTHE STREETS What is your favorite local, “around town” business?

Polarized sunglasses – Our eyes are delicate and very susceptible to the bright glare of the sun. Polarized lenses will provide some relief.

Carissa Decos Run to Wellness 5K

Beaches Laser Spine and Pain Medicine

A hat with a brim – Whether a simple or dramatic sun hat, shading your face from direct sunlight is a great complement to a dedicated sunscreen regimen. UV protective clothing – Available in a variety of tops and bottoms for men and women of all ages, UV protective clothing keeps your skin covered and safer, without having to worry about extra sunscreen.

HEALTH REVIEW

Craving sushi? Follow these 10 simple steps to make your sushi order fit your healthy lifestyle!

ASK THE DOC

By Sammy Pappas Sammy Pappas is our featured local dietitian of Dietitians of Palm Valley.

HEALTH SPOTLIGHT

Dr. Kristen Stewart

Total Dermatology Care Center

BUZZ: What motivated you to enter the field of dermatology? DOC: I was 21 when skin cancer developed on my back and was removed. It just changed everything for me.

1. Ask for brown rice (if it’s available): It’s the same calories as white rice, but more fiber, which is heart protective, helps with digestion and helps with satiety! 2. Avoid anything tempura: This is code for battered and deep-friend, a.k.a. extra calories and fat. If your favorite roll is listed with tempura, ask them to leave it off.

BUZZ: What should we, especially living in Florida, do to prevent sun damage that leads to skin cancer? DOC: We should start young. They should have sunscreen available in schools and have shade at playgrounds.

3. Stick to just one spicy tuna roll: This roll typically has mayonnaise added to it. One roll isn’t a big deal, but more than that is waste of calories. 4. Pass on the Philadelphia roll & bagel roll: the cream cheese used in these rolls amounts to 4-8 servings depending on the restaurant! 5.Limit yourself to one eel roll: Pros: Eel is especially high in omega-3 fatty acids. Cons: it is served in a sugary brown sauce that provides nothing nutritious – just calories.

BUZZ: What do you teach

6. For the lowest calorie options: Choose tuna, yellow tail, shrimp (not tempura), or salmon rolls. For the highest calorie options: try the “fancier” rolls, such as rainbow, dynamite or spider. These rolls are larger and have more ingredients and therefore are higher in calories. 7. Add scallions or cucumbers to any roll: These add extra flavor and minimal calories, or ask for your roll to be wrapped in cucumber or rice paper instead of rice. 8. Try some veggie rolls: Spinach, avocado, shiitake mushrooms, or peanuts are good options! 9. Watch the dip: Shrimp sauce is glorified mayo, soy sauce is loaded in salt, and eel sauce is loaded in sugar. If using these sauces, drizzle over the roll, don’t dunk! 10. Order edamame: Most sushi places will have edamame as a starter plate– packed with protein and fiber, this appetizer will help fill you up and prevent over eating at meal time! Have questions related to other types of restaurants and cuisine? Contact Dietitians of Palm Valley at 904-250-0075 or info@dietitiansofpalmvalley.com!

your patients about skin protection? DOC: Slip on clothing, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shade and slide on sunglasses. This should be taught in schools every year.

BUZZ: Those are great tips. What else can be done? DOC: The practice of sun avoidance is what we need to teach more. It’s more of shade, shirt and doing stuff early and doing stuff late. Avoid sun 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Two Thumbs Up How Good Food Should Taste

HobNob Food + Social Exchange Article by Anna Heise

the facts

Mussels, prepared with shallots, garlic, beer broth, homemade fennel sausage, and bacon aioli, with a side of toasted grilled country bread.

Where: 220 Riverside Avenue, Suite 110 Price: $-$$ Contact: HobnobJax.com

HOBNOB Happy Hour Social Bites HOBNOB is the place you want to take friends to hang out, relax and have drinks. With the modern interior, patio seating and comfy sectionals available in the bar area, they did an excellent job of offering space for those who may just want a drink and hang out.

A new happy hour menu is now available from 5 to 7 p. m. Thursday through Sunday, so we had to stop in to give it a try. The first thing we noticed were the drink prices, possibly the most competitive in town. HOBNOB offers $3 champagne flutes all day, $4 local beer, $6 drafts, $5 wine and $6 classic cocktails. We started with a classic Old Fashioned and The French 75, a combination of gin, lemon sugar and bubbles. The Social Bites bar menu offers up eight tasty options, from the very Southern FGT (fried green tomatoes with a pimento fondue) to the exotic Seared Tuna with kimchi cake. Priced starting at $6 for the FGT to $11 for the Seared Tuna, all of these dishes are large enough to share. We began with the Mussels; one of my favorites. This dish dares you not to dip into the soup. Impossible! An order of hummus is also a must-have – a simple dish, but tasty, with the hummus at a proper consistency and warm naan (the perfect vessel for delivery). Our last selection was the tuna, perfectly seared and set atop a rich cake of chopped kimchi. The tuna – sweet and warm – paired well with the spice of the kimchi to create an incredible taste experience. Stop in during the week for your experience, I do believe you will enjoy it! 24

Food Truck Foodies

The day I visited their happy little truck (seriously, take a look at it and not smile, I dare you), I was feeling a bit stuffed from a whole week of chowing down, so I wanted to mix it up a bit. After spending several minutes scanning the menu, much to the annoyance of my coworkers who accompanied me, I finally settled on something: The Fancy Schmancy. This ain’t your mama’s grilled cheese. It’s lovingly packed with a mixture of goat cheese, mozzarella, bacon, sundried tomatoes, red onion, arugula, and a balsamic glaze all between 2 slices of perfectly toasted bread. Incredible doesn’t even begin to describe it. This pile of melty goodness turned a mediocre day into an amazing one, and The Happy Grilled Cheese guys weren’t done yet.

Everyone loves grilled cheese, right? If you don’t, you’re either lactose intolerant, a vegan or just plain evil. Ok, that might be a bit harsh. Some of my best childhood memories are days when my mom would make me a grilled cheese. They were nothing fancy, just white bread and Kraft singles, but they were warm and gooey inside and made me feel the same way. Fast forward more years than I’m ready to admit, and I still love a good grilled cheese on days when nothing else will hit the spot. For those that are culinarily-challenged or just kind of lazy (I’m the latter), The Happy Grilled Cheese has something for just about every kind of tastebud. From the classic Happy Melt with 3 cheeses to the insane Uncle Vinny’s Melt with more ingredients than I can list here, The Happy Grilled Cheese will have something to please you.

Not wanting to rest on the laurels of their grilled cheeses alone, the team at The Happy Grilled Cheese also toss in some top-notch seasoned fries and some homemade chips that will blow your mind with just how good they are. If you’re feeling adventurous, which I’ll admit I wasn’t that day, you can get the chips with cheese & jalapeños, bacon, pulled pork, or “fully loaded”. I was a little afraid to ask what that entailed as I knew I’d have to try it. Another time, perhaps. I did, however, decide to give their dessert, a “s’more melt”, a try. This bad boy is loaded down with marshmallow fluff, Ghirardelli chocolate sauce, chocolate chips, & graham crackers sandwiched between brown sugar toast. For a dollar more you can even add bacon to it, so you know I had to go with that option. Mere words are not enough to describe the feeling this gave me, so I’ll just tell you to go ahead and try it for yourself. So when you’re in the mood for something cheesy, and it’s not a pickup line from yours truly, head on over to The Happy Grilled Cheese truck and bite into a little bit of heaven. Trust me, your inner child will thank you.

Do not underestimate the man behind the counter at Jax Diner, Chef Roderick “Sweet Pete” Smith. He is the forefather of the Food Truck movement here in the River City is one of the little-known facts about this delightful, funny and kind person.

LOCAL PLACES GILBERT’S SOCIAL

Southside GilbertsScoial.co Chef Gilbert is a force to behold as he easily works between the kitchen creating modern southern fare and visiting each table to welcome and thank each diner.

After an impressive stint in some of Jacksonville’s best dining spots, he spent time in the Bahamas and Sea Island. Now back home at Jax Diner, that talent is being used to provide the best of the best at a price affordable to all. This owner and chef took the time to chat with me about his new undertaking.

Tell us about Jax Diner and what makes it so unique? Jax Diner is a hidden gem in Jacksonville. What makes it great? Previously it was a sandwich shop, like a fast food casual restaurant. In some ways we are similar, but we use top-of-theline ingredients. Farmers stop in three to four times a day, and we purchase what is in season, then formulate our menu around those items. Our meats also come from local butchers. We keep everything as much as possible within the local family, and we take great pride in that. What type of food do you serve? On the menu, we have a lot of quick grab and go items, like burgers and dogs, but the most popular items are on the specials board. 90 percent of the patrons order from the board and never look at the menu. The board showcases our style of cooking and how much talent we have here at Jax Diner and still present it at a fair price.

MARKER 32

San Pablo and Beach Marker32.com

What would you recommend to first-time customers?

Marker 32 is a must try restaurant. They offer locally sourced food when possible and being locally owned makes it a great place to support.

It depends on what they’re in the mood for. If a burger, it would have to be the Cajun Burger, a little hit of spice, spiced sausage from Azar, provolone cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes, or perhaps the Ruben. We are one of the few restaurants in town that cure our corned beef. If they want something heavier, like an entrée, the shrimp and grits would be my recommended choice.

Written by: Anna Heise

Most popular dish on the menu? I don’t know. It’s pretty even across the board—anything from the po’boy, the tacos or the burgers. What is your favorite dish? My favorite dish right now is the loaded Mac and Cheese. The people who come in and order it call it “Crack and Cheese,” and that is how you will see it on the menu. What would you recommend for something a bit more adventurous? Talk to the chef, tell him what you are in the mood for and if we can do it, we will. People often ask us just to make them something.

Game Day:

TRIPLE PLAY:

Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament

Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp

THE DETAILS: What: 37th Annual Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament

Crustacean Nation JaxShrimp.com

When the (former) Jacksonville Suns Minor League Baseball team changed its name, logo and branding to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp last November, you have to admit that one of the first things you probably said to yourself (amid a chuckle or two) was “What?” Over the past few months following that news, the Jumbo Shrimp front office took to the media in the hopes of getting the city pumped up to cheer on the newly-proclaimed “Crustacean Nation.” Affordable Family Fun is the motto of Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp owner Ken Babby. The goal is to create a fun night out at the ballpark for an affordable price that all families can get behind. With the inaugural season coming to an end, all of Jacksonville is on board and sporting blue and red to the Baseball Grounds. Go Jax Shrimp! Mark your calendars for the upcoming home games at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville! The Baseball Grounds features 12 luxury skyboxes, four skydecks, HD videoboards in left field and along the outfield walls, a playground, and a one-of-a-kind Tiki Terrace at the left field corner.

Where: Jim King Park & Boat Ramp at Sister Creek When: July 17-22 The annual event is a long-standing tradition for residents of the Jacksonville area.

HISTORY: In 1980, a group of local businessmen wanted to organize a fishing tournament, like ones they had participated in other coastal areas. They thought Jacksonville was an ideal location and plans were made to launch the First Annual tournament, held in July of 1981.

In their shared commitment to cleanliness and affordable family fun in 2017, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp and Advanced Disposal teamed up to make the grounds the Cleanest Ballpark in Minor League Baseball. There are new recycling bins for ballpark guests to recycle aluminum and plastic in addition to the ‘Clean Team’ to keep the ballpark clean at every Jumbo Shrimp game.

WHAT TO DO:

July 1-2: vs. Mobile

Up to 300 boats fish the weeklong event for thousands of dollars in prizes. Annually, the Tournament attracts thousands of spectators who watch the weigh-in and enjoy the festivities. Favorite attractions include the Food Festival, live entertainment exhibitors and boat displays.

ON THE FIELD: Armada FC ArmadaFC.com

The Armada FC is Jacksonville’s official North American Soccer League club. Vision “The Armada FC is dedicated to building a successful and sustainable football club for the future by providing an outstanding experience for fans and developing a strong affinity with communities in Jacksonville and beyond.” Mission “We want to provide our region with a world-class soccer experience by showcasing a premium level of sports entertainment and fostering engagement within passionate and hard-working community. Our organization fulfills a need for pro soccer in Jacksonville and provides our city and our region with an opportunity to use pro soccer to progress our community.” Armada FC History Since getting its first professional team in 1980, Jacksonville has cultivated a rich soccer tradition. After a restrictive stadium lease greatly affected ticket sales, the Lipton Tea Co. relocated the New England Tea Men franchise to Jacksonville. The Jacksonville Tea Men, Northeast Florida’s first-ever major league-level sports team, played in the original North American Soccer League in front of crowds of 15-20,000 at the Gator Bowl from 1980-82. In 2012 at a USMNT versus Scotland friendly at EverBank Field, native Jacksonville businessman Mark Frisch drew inspiration to bring professional soccer back to Northeast Florida. Overwhelmed by the passionate fans and exciting atmosphere, he saw the potential in continuing to grow a sport he was learning to love. In May 2013, Frisch formed the Sunshine Soccer Group with the goal of bringing a professional soccer team to Jacksonville. On July 25, 2013, the re-formed North American Soccer League awarded Jacksonville, an area that reaches five million people throughout Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia, expansion rights as the league’s then-13th team. The team name was selected by the fans following an extensive four-month competition and survey where over 1,500 names were submitted. Finally, on Feb. 18, 2014, the name Jacksonville Armada FC was selected as a strong reflection of the city and region’s historic links and associations with first the Spanish, and then United States Navy. The First Coast is home to three large US Navy bases, which employ over 100,000. The team’s colors are navy blue, royal blue, gold and white, as selected by the fans, and the team logo features a strong anchor symbolizing the organization’s strong community link and shared brand essence of “Passionate, Progressive and Determined.” More than 30 years after soccer first landed in Northeast Florida, it returned with the Jacksonville Armada FC playing in their inaugural season in February 2015. The Armada FC sailed onto the scene in February 2015, hitting the pitch for the first time and riding three first-half goals to a 3-1 win over its inaugural opponent, the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer in front of a modern-era NASL preseason record 13,934 fans at EverBank Field. In April of 2015, the Armada FC defeated 3-1 in its NASL opener in front of a modern-era record of 16,164 fans, firmly proclaiming the club’s presence and cementing its mark in Jacksonville soccer history. BRENT MARTINEAU

GAME FACE: NEW JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

Sports Director at

Dawuane Smoot

Blair Brown

The Jaguars hope they get a steal in the third round with the defensive end out of Illinois. Smoot is a versatile player who can rush the passer from either side of the line. His role initially will likely be to back up Calais Campbell. Last year’s third round pick Yannick Ngakoue led the Jags in sacks last year.

The Jaguars 5th round pick was a linebacker out of Ohio University. Brown will be a special teams guy to start his NFL career, but also provides depth at the linebacker spot. Brown will be able to grow into the role of an “every down” linebacker because the Jags have good players in front of him.

Dede Westbrook

Marquez Williams

The Jaguars fourth round draft pick was a star wide receiver at Oklahoma. Westbrook can fly and is known for his speed and big play capability. Westbrook joins a receiving corps that is already deep and figures to compete with Rashad Greene and Allen Hurns for playing time.

The Jaguars are bringing back the fullback under Tom Coughlin and Doug Marrone. Williams played for the University of Miami last year. He’s a big man at 260 pounds. Before transferring to Miami, Williams played at Mars Hills University in North Carolina. Upload your event to iwantaBUZZ.com’s Online calendar.

TheChrisThomasBand.com “Heart Break” ranges from the wry call to independence of the title track from which the entire project sprung, to the sweet melancholy of “Somebody Else’s Heart.” The dramatic, surging ballad “Hurt” is a powerful vehicle for Scott’s voice as she soars over a spare rhythm section and classic string arrangement.

LADY ANTEBELLUM STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

Homing in on the melodious foundation that first brought the multi-platinum trio together, Lady Antebellum returns to radio airwaves with “You Look Good,” while concurrently announcing it as the debut single off their sixth studio album “Heart Break” released in June. After taking time to pursue solo projects last year, Charles Kelley, Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood simultaneously share plans to return to the road, with more than 65 shows planned in six countries on their “You Look Good” World Tour, presented by Nabisco.

With the clever extended metaphor of its lyrics and percolating groove, “Army” has a feel that’s a throwback to ‘70s pop, while the bright, breezy lift-off of “Think About You,” with an R&B-style guitar bouncing off of a banjo lick, is entirely of the moment. And as Lady A hits the road, the group is excited to add this new range of sounds and colors into a set already packed with a familiar arsenal of hits. With more than 18 million album sales worldwide, seven-time Grammy award winning group Lady Antebellum has earned six platinum singles, nine chart topping hits, countless other awards including Billboard Music Awards, People’s Choice Awards and Teen Choice Awards, while also taking home ACM and CMA “Vocal Group of the Year” trophies three years in a row.

Michelle announced “Da Don and Diva Tour.” With eight No. 1 and No. 2 Soundscan original studio albums, and four Grammy Award nominations under his belt since 2006, Rick Ross was a core artist on the Def Jam roster. At the start of 2017, Rick Ross celebrated the five-year anniversary of his mixtape, “Rich Forever,” considered by many of his fans to be his magnum opus for the streets. On March 17, he released his ninth studio album, “Rather You Than Me.” National Recording artist, chart-topping and awardwinning R&B singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, television personality, and mogul K. Michelle is currently working on her fourth full-length album. K. Michelle certainly has every reason to be confident. The Memphis, TN native’s second album, “Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart?,” bowed at No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B chart and number six on the Billboard Top 200, eventually becoming the “best-selling female R&B album of 2014.”

LORRIE MORGAN July 28 • Ritz Jacksonville Songstress Lorrie Morgan has sold over eight million records including 14 top ten hits, 12 recorded albums and four Female Vocalist of the Year awards. In 2016, she’s back with soulful, reflective new music on her latest album release, “Letting Go… Slow.” Morgan’s success is defined by her love of a great song and ability to sell it. Over the past two decades, as musical trends came and went, she has remained true to herself. Today, she has become the essence of country music femininity and a renaissance woman of the genre recognized as royalty by her fans and her peers. When she’s not on tour or in the recording studio, you’ll find her performing on stage at the legendary Grand Ole Opry or at home spending time with her husband Randy, her daughter Morgan, son Jesse, her grandchildren and her dogs Weezy, Puddin’ and Abby Ray in her hometown of Nashville, Tennessee.

CATCHIN' A BUZZ

Town Beer Co. Craft Beer Bar Now Open in Murray Hill TownBeerCo.com 904.374.6568

New Jacksonville craft beer bar and shop Town Beer Co. is now open for business in the Murray Hill area. Focusing on local, the taps will pour only beers brewed in Jacksonville, and the retail shelves will offer packaged beers exclusively from Florida breweries. Co-owners Alex and Priya Moldovan wanted to “showcase” beer made in Jacksonville. Through this concept and under the tagline “Drink beer from your Town,” the bar looks to introduce the community to beer styles produced “in town,” and will offer various beers that many people may not even know exist, says Alex. The business seeks to support local breweries and increase sustainability by decreasing reliance on beer transported long distances. The venue is open and airy, featuring clean, bright lines in a coffee shop-type atmosphere which might be described as modern, rustic and industrial all at the same time. The 1200 square foot space is anchored by an eight-seat concrete bar which faces the 10 taps and menu board. Guests will find additional seating options at tables and chairs, a 12-seat table, corner wall bench, and a six-person table that also doubles as a ping pong table. The lighting fixtures, including a Sputnik pendant, have an industrial flair. Shelves along the back wall will be home to retail beer ready to-go. Alex worked on the much of the build-out himself and removed parts of the existing drywall to reveal a brick wall that adds a different character at the corner near the bar. As far as the beers that guests will have waiting for them, there’s a mix of different beer styles, from light to dark, to barrel-aged and a few surprises that haven’t been seen outside of the breweries much, if at all. At the outset, the taps will feature beers from Aardwolf Brewing, Wicked Barley Brewing, Intuition Ale Works, Pinglehead Brewing, Veterans United Craft Brewery, Bold City Brewery, Engine 15 Brewing, Zeta Brewing and Green Room Brewing. Tap beers will be available in different size pours: pint, half-pint, and 4-ounce sizes. For those looking to sample a few, order several short pours. The bar will also fill growlers to-go. Town Beer Co. is located at 1176 Edgewood Ave. South, in the Murray Hill area of Jacksonville. Note that the entrance to Town Beer Co. is at the corner at Edgewood and Mayflower St. Parking is available streetside or in a backlot.

BEER BUZZED By Linda Johnson

Green Room Brewing GreenRoomBrewing.com

Green Room Brewing in Jacksonville Beach celebrated its sixth anniversary last month with the release of its annual Secret Spot Imperial Stout aged in Dominican rum barrels. In addition, the new eight-tap portable brewery bar pours variants of the Secret Spot and additional special tappings. The Secret Spot has been aging in its barrel homes since earlier in the year. And, get ready to see some changes to the brewery. For roughly the past year and a half, Green Room has been planning and working on an expansion project, and major changes are already underway. Around 1000 square feet of space has been added to the rear of the building. Following the anniversary, more construction is taking place, as the brewery removes and replaces the existing restrooms with larger ones, says brewery co-owner and head brewer Eric Luman. “But, that’s not all — the bar area will also be transformed. The current walk-in cooler behind the bar will be removed in

favor of an 18×30 exterior walk-in cooler, allowing for the bar to open up into the current rear space. When it’s all finished, the new addition will allow for an expanded tap room area, new offices and an enlarged brewhouse space. The 7-barrel brewhouse will gain fermenters, which will double production capacity,” says Eric. While this increase may result in more beer going into distribution, Eric points out that “we hope to focus on more bottle releases and having our core beers available in bottles for purchase in the taproom. The renovated bar area will also feature a new Crowler canning machine”. Lastly, Hurricane Matthew barrelled in on Green Room’s exterior parapet last fall, requiring a rebuild and new signage, which are also in the plans. Green Room Brewing is located at 228 Third Street North.

JULY HOROSCOPE

by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire

ARIES (March 21- April 19) You may be in need of some self-help books this month. There are no love prospects in your near future, and reading is something you can do while you are alone this month. Might as well read up on what others do to be successful in meeting people you aren’t. TAURUS (April 20 – May 20) Your passion has been reinvigorated this month. It’s time to not blend in with the background, but stand out for once. Buy a crazy shirt or wild dress that will turn heads. It’s time to shake things up and mingle (instead of being you… boring). GEMINI (May 21 – June 21) This month is more about fixing things than starting new ones. As much as you want to forget about the relationship that just had “Epic Fail” written all over it and move on, believe it or not, bringing closure to it makes you come off as less of a jerk. CANCER (June 22 – July 22) With the current alignment coming up this month, you are about to have a monumental situation. Either a long relationship is coming to a quick end, or you are about to embark on meeting a possible soul mate, if such things exist. Either way, strap on your seat belt and prepare for the craziness. LEO (July 23 – August 22) With Mars visiting Gemini this month, your casual connections will be at an alltime high. Sure, we all want a meaningful relationship, but you have to play the hand your dealt. It’s time to frolic and play the “can’t wait to tell this story” card this month. Enjoy. VIRGO (August 23 – September 22) Neptune is in retrograde and with this you are licking your love wounds. Everyone else is having fun but you are emotionally scarred and not up to meeting new people. It’s a shame because it’s summer-loving time. LIBRA (September 23 – October 22) It’s time you start having the fun. Normally a giver, Libra, but this month Jupiter is in Aries, your partnership house, and it’s time you bravely ask for what you need. Don’t feel guilty about it either. The rest of us have been doing it for years. SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21) When the Gemini new moon eclipse happened, it brought power to your eighth house of intimacy and sex. Yes, apparently there are at least eight of those houses. And with that, you should be giddy to get out there and meet some people. For once you’re the interesting one. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 21) The partnership vibe is in the air all month. The Sun visits Gemini and Cancer this month, rulers of your committed and intimate relationship sectors. So, if you have been a make-out bandit lately, this month you are going to be slowing down and finding more “quality time” with someone. CAPRICORN (December 22 – January 19) You’re in touch with your feelings after an emotional six months, but maybe a little, too in touch. With Jupiter going through Taurus, your fifth house of romance, you may finally be intimate with someone rather than yourself this month. AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18) Cool, calm and casual? Not anymore. Passion, and perhaps some drama, ignites your sign this month. Thanks to a procession of planets in Gemini, your fifth house of romance, you’re feeling very reactive and charged-up this month. So, you may want to think before you just pounce this month. PISCES (February 19 – March 20) Back to your old true and tried ways there Pisces… alone. Don’t be bummed. This is the spot you should feel most comfortable in. Back in the saddle of loneliness. That should be a song. I digress. Alone and single this month Pisces. Hopefully next month love reaches out to you. Upload your event to iwantaBUZZ.com’s Online calendar.
