Letter from IWA President

Dear Friends, We are guided by our mission to reflect Jesus the teacher and the fruits of this labor of love are as varied as the many supporters who make it possible. Our mission partners are listed in the pages of this annual report and we are immensely grateful for their support. Please help us thank these people, businesses and foundations for their generosity and dedication to continuing the legacy created by the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament more than 145 years ago. You will also see photographs of some of the philanthropy-funded projects we celebrated during the July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016 fiscal year, including the Sister Catherine Café, a stage set for the drama department, new media equipment for the Angel Avenue Student Center, and much more. These projects, together with more than $900,000 provided in critical need-based tuition assistance to 37% of the student body, represent just a few of the ways that donors continue to impact student life at IWA every day. While upgrades to programs and facilities are important, the true test of our work can be seen in the success of our students. The 47 students in the 2016 graduating class were all accepted to colleges and universities, including 21% accepted to Texas A&M University and 21% to University of Texas. This small class also earned an amazing $3.7 million in scholarship offers. They boasted 22 AP Scholars, two National Merit Commended Scholars and two National Hispanic Scholars. We are so proud of them and all of our extraordinary Angels. Praised be the Incarnate Word! Sincerely,

Sammie Grunwald

Letter from School Board Chair

Dear Friends, I am reminded, time and again, how our students receive an education that is truly unique today. They experience prayer and worship, surrounded by caring and loving teachers and administrators who provide them with the tools necessary to achieve and live our core values of: Faith; Dignity; Integrity; Dedication; Gratitude; and Service. Our academic program is exceptional. Students consistently outpace state and national averages for standardized tests and earn numerous academic distinctions and honors. Our teachers and administrators are “Angels among us” who are vested in the success of each student. We are all grateful to them for helping our students learn, mature, and grow in their Catholic faith. The Incarnate Word Academy experience extends far beyond the walls of the classroom. Our students provide thousands of Christian/Community service hours each year “to become an image of Christ within our community” as proclaimed in our vision statement. The charism of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament is illustrated through the actions of our students. As a School Board we recognize the sacrifice parents make to invest in an IWA education and we thank them for entrusting their children to us. We remain dedicated to maintaining affordable tuition while providing the best education possible. On a personal note, I would like to recognize and thank two teachers who retired last year. Sister Catherine Brehony and Coach Casper Wenzel were very instrumental in forming me as a person while in high school and continue to do so even now. Their impact and dedication to Incarnate Word Academy cannot be adequately thanked. Praised be the Incarnate Word, now and forevermore! Amen. Sincerely,

Timothy Ehrman

President’s Circle Incarnate Word Academy’s annual giving society, The President Circle, was established to strengthen the Annual Giving Campaign. Through exceptional levels of generosity, our supporters contribute gifts of $1,000 or more to the Annual Fund. Many who have directed their philanthropy to scholarships, capital improvements or faculty support/ recognition also maintain their annual membership in this important leadership group. In fact, the 2015-2016 President’s Circle consisted of 89 members who contributed 73% of the total unrestricted dollars raised. Since its inception in 2011, The President’s Circle has helped fund some of Incarnate Word Academy’s most important priorities such as tuition assistance, faculty development and educational initiatives. A huge thank you to those who joined the 2015-2016 President’s Circle and contributed to the success of our efforts.

OUR VISION

OUR CORE VALUES

To Become an Image of Christ Within Our Community. To extend the legacy of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament, as leaders, partners, and advocates for our students and the adults who serve them; and to provide a community where all may grow in Christian wholeness and bear witness to the presence and love of Christ among us.

Faith: Belief in Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Word, and His message of love for the world

OUR MISSION To Reflect Jesus the Teacher. We form students in a loving and challenging environment where the individual gifts of every student are recognized, celebrated, and developed as a reflection of Christ.

Dignity: Respect for the worth of every person and for life in all its forms, with special concern for the poor Compassion: Love, concern, and understanding in service of life-long learning Integrity: Honesty, justice, and consistency in all relationships Dedication: The pursuit of high standards of performance among teachers, students, and the school community Gratitude: Acceptance, nurturing, and celebration of individual gifts and talents Service: Recognition of God’s blessings and commitment to sharing them with others in school, family, Church, and community
