Wine & Dine Jefferson Style Jefferson’s Love of Food & Wine A man with many passions, Thomas Jefferson is sometimes called “America’s first wine expert” due to his extensive experimentation in viticulture and oenology. At his home at Monticello, you’ll find Jefferson’s original, restored dumbwaiter and restored wine cellar. Virginia is considered the birthplace of American wine. Jefferson’s dream to produce great local wine continues to this day with the Thomas Jefferson Foundation partnering with Piedmont Virginia Community College to create a training vineyard on Montalto, Jefferson’s “high mountain” that overlooks Monticello.
