Already explored Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and James Monroe Highland? Take a virtual trip just north to James Madison’s Montpelier in Orange, Virginia. Montpelier is currently offering a variety of online programs and events in addition to a virtual tour of the house. Even further north, George Natural Bridge Washington’s Mount Vernon can also be experienced via virtual tours, live streams and online learning opportunities. Just west of Charlottesville is the quaint town of Staunton, which happens to be home to the American Shakespeare Center, the world’s only replica of Shakespeare’s original indoor theater. This renowned theater is currently streaming performances online for all to enjoy. Art lovers can virtually tour many of Charlottesville’s museums and galleries, and can also consider exploring the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) in nearby Richmond. Until it can welcome visitors again, the VMFA is offering virtual tours of its impressive collections, online activities and much more. Don’t end your virtual visit of Richmond without also seeing what Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens or Maymont has to offer in all their spring and summer glory. For other art and theater venues offering virtual activities and events, see pages 48-50. There will come a time when trips around the Charlottesville area can be planned once again, including an array of in-person tours catering to history buffs, foodie lovers and craft beverage fans as well as tours on horseback through the beautiful Virginia countryside. Until then, though, check out what options are online. Watch the Charlottesville Welcome Book for more ideas and planning inspiration, as well as if you are looking for more familyfriendly daytrip ideas.
