Looking for more indoor and outdoor grandeur? On April 27 and 28, enjoy tours of three of Albemarle County’s most stunning Jefferson-era properties, all of which are listed in the National Register of Historic Places: Redlands, Bellair Farm and Esmont. Under one family’s continuous ownership since an initial 1730 land grant, Redlands reflects the architecture of the late 1700s — including locally made brick and fine Adamesque woodwork — and stands on a dramatic site just a few miles from Monticello. Bellair Farm, which includes a main house (ca. 1800) in the Federal style, has been in continuous operation since the 17th century and continues to balance the mission of preserving a historic property and producing food sustainably for hundreds of families who buy shares of each year’s yield. Esmont, built around 1816 for an Albemarle doctor, is a richly appointed country house with a parquet hall floor and mantels made of Philadelphia marble.
