Berkeley Plantation

To visit Berkeley Plantation is to step back in time to a

bygone era. One of the most historic plantations in Virginia, Berkeley Plantation was the birthplace of America’s ninth president, William Henry Harrison, and the ancestral home of Benjamin Harrison, America’s 23rd president. While important, this is not Berkeley Plantation’s only claim to fame. The Charles City property’s history goes all the way back to 1619 when settlers observed the first official Thanksgiving in America. On top of this, Berkeley Plantation is the birthplace of “Taps,” a tune composed by General Daniel Butterfield during the Civil War.
