The Arts & Music Scene

Art That Moves You Surrealist painter Salvador Dali said, “A true artist is not one who is inspired, but one who inspires others.” Whatever medium may inspire or provoke you, galleries and artwork abound here in Charlottesville. Each first Friday of the month, local galleries and other venues on the Downtown Mall open their doors to display works of art in the popular First Friday Artwalk.

A perfect place to start your walk is the McGuffey Art Center. This gallery space is full of artists at work in their studios accented by a gift shop that carries a variety of members’ art throughout the year. You can pick up a gallery guide to First Friday offerings as well as browse the 45 light-filled studios and three galleries at McGuffey itself. The University of Virginia’s Fralin Museum of Art provides a sophisticated, high-tech home for the art contained within its historic walls. Alongside the permanent exhibits this spring, explore special exhibits, such as “Kevin Everson: Rough and Unequal,” a film created by UVA professor of Art Kevin Everson that can be seen through April 18. Another exhibition that will be at the Fralin Museum of Art this spring is “Collect, Care, Conserve, Curate: The Life of the Art Object,” a multi-cultural exhibition showcasing some of the rare pieces in the museum’s permanent collection.
