Welcoming Places to Stay Plan a Daytrip! While Charlottesville itself offers plenty to see and do, its central location makes it the perfect place to stay while exploring other areas in the region. Love history? Take a trip north to James Madison’s Montpelier in nearby Orange, Virginia, or make the longer trek to George Washington’s Mount Vernon. Outdoor lovers will enjoy Charlottesville’s proximity to the Shenandoah National Park, where visitors can explore miles of trails and scenic hikes. Experience more of nature’s majestic wonders at Natural Bridge or Luray Caverns, each only a 1-2 hour drive from Charlottesville. If it’s art you love, consider spending an afternoon at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, only about an hour away in nearby Richmond. While you are in RVA, plan to visit the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, where you can explore over 50 acres of delightful gardens, or Maymont’s beautiful Victorian mansion and grounds. To the west of Charlottesville sits Staunton and the Shenandoah Valley, both of which offer an array of attractions, from unique antique stores and the American Shakespeare Center, which celebrated its 30th year in 2018, to numerous dining options, breweries and wineries. Looking for active fun? Plan a trip kayaking down the James River in Scottsville, or hit the slopes (when in season) at Massanutten or Wintergreen Resorts. While a slightly longer drive, ACE Adventure Resort also offers a plethora of fun with its zip line tours, rock climbing, white water rafting and more.
