We strive to make your stay here the best it can possibly be. Melbourne is constantly voted one of the best cities in the world, and we think it’s our duty to show you why. Through this welcome pack you’ll find information on Urban Central, the things we offer, the diverse suburbs of Melbourne, great ideas on things to do and lots of help to make your stay as easy as possible. When staying at Urban Central, you receive free breakfast every morning, a free dinner once a week, free rice, pasta, tea, coffee and milk, a fully stocked bar, internet access and an excellent travel service. It’s no wonder we’re voted one of the best hostels in Australia.



What time is Check Out? Check out is 10am. You will need to bring your towel, pillowcase and room card to reception. There will be a $10-$20 fee for late check outs. When is the bar open? Urban bar is open from 4pm every day. Where Can I do laundry? Level 1 and level 3 have washing machines and dryers, available 24 hours. Both take $1 coins only. $4 for a wash, $2 for the dryer. Change and washing powder is available from reception. When is breakfast? Breakfast is served daily between 7.30am-9.30am in the dining area, free for all guests. Where can I access the internet? Internet is available throughout the building. For use of Urban’s computers, you simply pay reception, and we will provide you with a username. For wifi, log on to ‘MyPort’ and use a credit card. All of Urban Central’s Computers have Skype installed. Where can I buy alcohol? Urban Central’s bar is open from 4pm each day, and serve a variety of cheap drinks. Alcohol is only allowed to be consumed in the bar. Any outside alcohol found in rooms and around the venue will be discarded. Is there a curfew? There is no curfew, we have 24 hour access with your room card. What time is reception open? We have 24 hour reception; however please note that reservations and extensions can only be made between 8am-10pm. Can I smoke in the building? Australia has a strict smoking ban for all indoor venues, and some outdoor venues also. We ask that you use the smoking area attached to the dining area through the day, or the front of the building at night. When is the kitchen open? 5am-12am. Can I user hair straighteners/hairdryers in the rooms? Due to our fire safety equipment, we ask all guests to refrain from using hair straightness and hair dryers in the rooms. Please use these items in the bathrooms to avoid the fire brigade being called out. A false alarm may cost you thousands of dollars.

The city is a great place to start your Melbourne adventure. Packed full of superb shopping opportunities, amazing art galleries, kitsch café’s and much more, the main section of the CBD starts at Swanston Street where you can find Federation Square, Australian Centre of Moving Image (ACMI) the National Gallery, China Town, Melbourne Central, and the State Library. The Paris End of Collins Street (near Parliament) holds the boutique stores for those with money to burn, but for those trying to save a buck, go for the DFO behind the Exhibition Centre. The city is a short walk from Urban Central. Turn left on Clarendon Street and go straight. At the Yarra River, you can keep going to get to Southern Cross Station, turn right to walk to Swanston Street, or turn left to go to DFO department stores and Docklands. Melbourne is most famous for its Laneway Culture. A great way to spend your day is to simply get lost in the alleys and side streets, as they are full of bars, cafés, independent stores and some of the world’s best Graffiti. Speak to reception for information on walking tours and to pick up some specialist maps.

Transport - Urban Central is based right next to 2 of the major tram lines in Melbourne (see pages 10-11 for more details on where these can take you). We are also close to the 55 Tram line (To the Zoo and St Kilda Road) 250 bus line, and a 10 minute walk from Southern Cross Station. A Myki ticket is valid for all trains, buses and trams, remember to buy a ticket before you travel (available from 7-11, Petrol Stations, and many other outlets) Supermarket - the closest Supermarkets are just around the corner. Turn right as you exit Urban Central, walk to the first set of traffic lights, turn left, and one block away are Woolworths and Aldi. South Melbourne Market (open Wednesday-Sunday 8am-4pm) is also one block further than Woolworths for some great fresh fruit and veg, plus world famous Dim Sims. Post Office - 100 Market Street. 137678. Turn right as you exit Urban Central, turn left at the traffic lights, and left onto Market Street. The Post office is located next to the Aldi. Clarendon Street - This is a major shopping street of South Melbourne. On this street you can find all major banks, phone companies and many great cafes, restaurants and take away’s. Doctor/Dentist - Numbers for these services can be found on the back page of this welcome pack.

96 Tram As you exit Urban Central, turn right onto City Road, and only a minute away you will find yourself on the 96 Tram line. Take this North to travel into the City, through Bourke Street, via Southern Cross Station. Bourke Street mall holds almost everything you could want for a shopping experience. Continue onwards to Melbourne Museum, IMAX theatre, and up Nicholson Street. The 86 Tram line also travels through Bourke Street. So change from the 96 to the 86 anywhere along Bourke Street and go west to Waterfront City in Docklands, or East to Gertrude Street and Smith Street in Collingwood, home to outlet stores galore and many interesting nights out. Or take the 96 Tram South on City Road through South Melbourne, along Albert Park, Middle Park, and all the way down to Acland Street, the heart of St Kilda. Enjoy a sun soaked day on the beach, a laugh filled lunch at Luna Park, or indulge yourself with one of the many cakes from an Acland Street bakery. 10


112 Tram Turn left onto City Road as you exit Urban Central, and you will find yourself next to the 112 Tram on Clarendon Street. Travel north (from outside BP garage) on the 112 Tram, and you can visit the Casino, Exhibition Centre and DFO. Continue on to Collins Street, from Southern Cross Station (from here you can catch trains to all different suburbs of Melbourne, and buses to the airport), and all the way down to the glamorous Paris End shopping district. Out of the city you’ll go to the vibrant and entertaining Brunswick Street, home to bars, restaurants, cafes, art galleries and more. From here you can keep on to St George’s Road, and the calm and beautiful suburb of Northcote. Take the 112 tram South (next to McDonalds) down Clarendon Street, where you’ll find shops, restaurants, cafes and much more. You’ll travel past Past Albert Park and the MSAC, and at the end of the line is Fitzroy Street, the start of St Kilda’s beach precinct.


ALWAYS wear sunscreen, even on a cloudy day. Cars drive on the left in Australia Melbourne is known for 4 Seasons in one day. So take your umbrella or rain coat with you every day. Even if it looks like a Sunny Day, it could rain at any time. You cannot drink alcohol on the street in Melbourne. If you are found drinking on the street, you may be fined. The trams, trains and buses of Melbourne are a great way to get around. You will need to buy a Myki Card to access all public transport. The Myki card can be purchased from any 7-11, or major train station. Most tourist attractions are located in Zone 1. Melbourne prides itself on amazing coffee, make sure you check out the independent cafes. Explore the City lane ways, Fitzroy, and St Kilda.



Trams run until midnight on weekdays, and until 2am on weekends. Trains run from 5am-Midnight each day. In Australia, you MUST be wearing a helmet if riding a bike. No exceptions. (There are Bike Helmets available to rent from reception, or to purchase from 7-11) You can rent Bikes by the hour or day all around Melbourne. Look out for Rental Stations in all major locations. The closest to Urban Central is just past the McDonalds on Clarendon Street. The Night Bus runs through the Night on Fridays and Saturdays. Banks are closed at the weekend, and on all public holidays, so make sure you sort out your finances in time. Local Markets are the best place to buy your groceries, gifts and mementos. Look out for Artists markets and collectives such as Rose Street Artists Markets, Docklands Waterfront Market, Arts Centre Market, Lost and Found Vintage Market, Hello Sailor Vintage Fair, and many more.
