Recommended Destination: GUATEMALA The Republic of Guatemala borders with Mexico to the West and to the North, to the East with Belize, the Gulf of Honduras (Caribbean Sea) and the Republic of Honduras, to the Southeast with El Salvador, and to the South by the Pacific Ocean. The country has an area of 108,889 km². Its capital is Guatemala City, officially called "New Guatemala of the Assumption". The official language is Spanish, although there are twenty-three Mayan languages, the languages Xinca and Garífuna - the latter spoken by the Afro-descendant population in the Caribbean department of Izabal. Guatemala has a rich indigenous culture resulting from the Mayan heritage and Castilian influence during the colonial era. After its independence from Spain in 1821, what today is Guatemala became part of the First Mexican Empire as well as the Federal Republic of Central America; it was until the year 1847 when the present republic was established; in 1944 the Guatemalan Revolution happened, and lasted until 1954, a year in which a national liberation movement resumed the country's power and precipitated it to a civil war that began in 1960 and ended in 1996 with the signing of the Peace Agreements.
