ARCHEOLOGICAL SITES: Chichen Itza. One of the 7 wonders of the modern world, Chichen Itza is about 2 hours West of Cancun. It is by and large the most important Maya city on the Yucatan Peninsula; the site is so huge that it takes at least a full day exploring it. Chichen Itza was founded in 445 BC. In 1204 BC it was mysteriously abandoned. The city is divided into two areas: The old Chichen Itza, built between the years 60 and 900 C.E. and the new Chichen Itza, built in the 10th century. Coba. The city of Coba developed near five lakes that were a fundamental factor to its development and subsistence. When you reach the top of the pyramid Nohoch Mul, you can observe from its 42 meters height, the ancient Mayan city of Coba, surrounded by 5 lakes, which in its heyday reached 50,000 inhabitants. Tulum. The great walled city is located in the Riviera Maya, almost 1 hour from Playa del Carmen. In ancient times, the city received the Mayan name of Zamá (meaning “dawn”). It is known today as Tulum (meaning “wall”). Placed on top of the limestone cliffs and with a spectacular view of the turquoise sea, it is the only built Mayan citadel. Tulum is the most famous archaeological zone of Quintana Roo state. PARKS. Xcaret, Xplor, and Xel-Ha include some smaller archeological vestiges as part of their attractions. Xel-Ha Natural Park. The ancestral Mayan name of this wonderful place means "where water is born". Xel-Ha is one of the most perfect creations of nature, and a paradise for those who visit it. This extraordinary place consists of a combination of lagoons, coves, cenotes and caves that are fed by the sea and by underground rivers and springs, making Xel-Ha the largest natural aquarium in the world. Xcaret Eco Park. Probably the biggest and most diverse attraction is the ecological park of Xcaret, full of attractions, from swimming with dolphins, underground rivers and an amazing night show, coupled with its great variety of gastronomic offerings make this park so unique Garrafón Natural Park. The Natural Park of Garrafón is located on the island closest to Cancun, Isla Mujeres, only 25 minutes by sea. Located in Punta Sur, it is known for its beautiful reefs and spectacular cliffs. It is home to an ancient Mayan temple. These cliffs offer dazzling views of the island, the Caribbean and beyond. Rio Secreto.
