‘LISTENING’ TO THE NATURE

F

ilming documentaries for a living, Roberts gets to go to ver y special places and stays longer than a normal tourist would. He

kept on going back to rain forests, and he compared his experience at the rain forests to looking at paintings. “You go to an art galler y and you walk along and move on to the next one. But when you’re actually embedded into the rainforest, you sit there and let it all wash over you. Over time, you start to see things, you start to hear things, and you think, ‘Wow!’ There is a lot more to hear than what first meets the eye.”

“If you’re making a movie, you tell the actor ‘Okay, stand there. Say your line. Walk from there to there.’ You can’t do that with a wild animal,” says Roberts. There had been times when the crew had to wait for days to get the perfect shot. In those long hours of waiting, the only thing to do would be to stay awake, tell each other stories and keep an eye on the weather. If the weather changes or the animal to be filmed comes back, the crew jumps into action.
