THE BROWN AND WHITE

Students and staff are glad to be back on campus and are appreciating school life more than ever. Late last year I informed you that as part of our broader Reconciliation Action Program, we intended to offer a number of First Nations Scholarships. I am pleased to announce that this program has now commenced with five students joining us from Western Australia (two students in Year 10, two in Year 8 and one in Year 7). The Year 7 student and one of the students joining Year 10 are brother and sister. We wish them well and look forward to this program enriching all our lives at Ivanhoe Grammar School. From an academic perspective, our Class of 2021 continued the success of previous years in ATAR scores. Some key highlights included: • 99+ : 5% (top 1% of the State) • 90+ : 36%(top 10% of the State) • 80+ : 59% (top 20% of the State) In particular, we would like to congratulate our School Dux and IB Dux Patrick Suiter, who received a perfect International Baccalaureate score of 45 which translates to the highest possible attainable ATAR of 99.95. There were also 93 perfect subject scores across both VCE and IB. We wish the Class of 2021 well in the next phase of their journey beyond Ivanhoe Grammar School and look forward to catching up with them at numerous OIGA reunions and events into the future. One of the events which the entire School is looking forward to in the

not-too-distant future is the opening of the Sports and Aquatic Centre. The Centre will provide outstanding facilities for our students, and this multi-level facility includes: • A state-of-the-art 50 metre, FINA accredited eight-lane swimming pool with adjustable depth levels • Four basketball/netball courts • Table-tennis facilities • Eight indoor volleyball courts • Dance studio • 16 badminton courts • Two rooftop tennis courts • Physical education and sports offices • Gymnasium, fitness centre and weights room We look forward to officially opening the Centre later in the year and inviting alumni to view the facility at scheduled open days. Other capital projects that are currently in progress include: • The establishment of a new Café at Plenty Campus • The resurfacing of an existing play area outside the library at Buckley House Planning for further capital sports improvements are also well underway including: • Plenty Campus; a new hockey and soccer pitch (the hockey pitch is multi-functional accommodating 9 tennis courts) • A new playground at Buckley House • Chelsworth Park; a totally new building to accommodate both girls and boys, including change rooms, a weights room, viewing areas, umpire rooms and entertaining areas. The last two years has significantly interrupted our alumni reunion program. As we emerge from COVID-19 restrictions, we anticipate re-invigorating these events during the year and I look forward to seeing you there to reminisce and reconnect with old friends. AUSTRALIA DAY HONOURS

Australia Day recognition to Old Boy Very Reverend Peter George Williams AM Ivanhoe Grammar School was delighted to hear that the Very Reverend Peter George Williams (’70), Vicar General & Moderator of the Curia at the Diocese of Parramatta, was recently recognised in the Australia Day 2022 Honours List. Father Peter was made a member of the Order of Australia ‘for significant service to the Catholic Church in Australia, and to tertiary education.’ He was one of 1,040 Australians whose achievements spanned community service, science, research, sport, the arts and other categories. Father Peter attended Ivanhoe Grammar School from 1964-1970. He then undertook extensive tertiary and theological studies across a number of tertiary institutions over the course of his adult life. This included a BA (Medieval Studies and Philosophy, ANU, 1975), a BTheol (Australian College of Theology, 1979), a BEd (La Trobe University, 1990), a Master of Theology (University of Sydney, 1995) and MA (Liturgical Studies, Catholic University

of America 1997). In 2014 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of the University from ACU. Father Peter’s interest in liturgy emerged from having been involved as a liturgical musician from an early age as both a singer and as an organist. The opportunity to study liturgy formally came in 1994 when Bishop Bede Heather invited him to study abroad at the Catholic University of America. Father Peter was ordained a Catholic priest in 1992 and has held appointments in many parishes in the Diocese of Parramatta, serving as Dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral Parish in Parramatta (2004–2006). From 2011–2014 he was Vicar General in the Diocese of Parramatta and Episcopal Vicar for Social Welfare. Peter is currently Moderator of the Curia (appointed 2011), and the Director of Liturgy (appointed 1998) in the Diocese of Parramatta. In November 2014 Peter was elected by the College of Consultors as the Administrator of the Catholic Diocese of Parramatta. In August 2006, Father Peter was appointed Director of Liturgy for World Youth Day Sydney, 2008 and was responsible for the planning of the liturgical celebrations surrounding WYD and the Papal visit. He served

as Executive Secretary of the National Liturgical Commission from 2000–2011 overseeing the implementation of the new translation of the Roman Missal. He was elected Fellow of St John’s College, Sydney in 2009 and a Member of the NSW Chapter of ACU in 2010. He served as Chairman of the National Liturgical Music Board (2005-2016) overseeing the publication of the Catholic Worship Book II. In his response to Gerard Foley acknowledging the congratulations from the School on his award, Father Peter stated that he owed much to Ivanhoe Grammar School in his educational formation, and he still retains many happy memories of his days at the Ridgeway Campus. He also added that he doubts that he would recognise the School in its current physical configuration. Father Peter has also accepted the invitation to join the School’s Gallery of Achievement. In doing so, he will join his brother Ronald Williams (’65) who is also a recipient of the Order of Australia as well as being a member of the Gallery. Ron, a QC, has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in public, administrative and common law fields.

REUNIONS

After two years during which reunions were effectively postponed or cancelled as a result of COVID-19, it was wonderful to resume the program during Term 1. As shown in the images and words below, our Term 1 reunion provided an opportunity for many alumni to reconnect in person and share recollections of the School from days past. Class of 1972 – The Ridgeway Campus 50 Year Reunion - 16 March 2022 Being 50 years older did not deter an attentive group from the Class of 1972 taking a tour of the School and the new Sports and Aquatic Centre, before adjourning to Buckley Hall for lunch with Principal Gerard Foley, and long serving former staff members Nigel Kendall and Frank English. It was great to see some familiar faces as well as several not seen for nearly half a century! In addition, two of the attendees from that year, Tony Radford AO and Nick Aitken (Wilbur Wilde) are in our Gallery of Achievement.

Last post ceremony remembers Old Boy

James Moio (’09) – Spark Relief Teachers

It was a poignant moment for Jemima Adams (’20) when she attended the Last Post Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial in January. Jemima, a student at ANU who works part-time at the War Memorial, stood and listened as the story of Lieutenant Arthur Hugh Tibbitts (’1923) was recalled.

The entrepreneurial ambitions of James Moio (’09) continue to grow. Over the past two years, he has launched several business ventures with best friend and fellow alum Andrew Sheehan (’09).

Commencing at 4.45 pm each day, the ceremony shares the story behind one of the names on the Roll of Honour. The ceremony attended by Jemima recalled the ultimate sacrifice by Lt Tibbitts on what was the 80th anniversary of the Parit Sulong Massacre in Johor, Malaya (now Malaysia). This atrocity resulted in the deaths of Lt Tibbitts and 145 Australian and Indian men; out of 110 Australians, only three survived. The ceremony begins with the Australian National Anthem followed by the piper’s lament. Visitors are invited to lay wreaths and floral tributes beside the Pool of Reflection. An individual’s story is told and the Ode is recited by Australian Defence Force personnel. The ceremony ends with the sounding of the Last Post. Jemima reached out to the Alumni Office and shared the link to the ceremony below. https://m.youtube.com/ watch?v=FezeV18j_yg

THE BROWN AND WHITE

Following school, James completed a Bachelor of Applied Science at RMIT and worked in the education sector. Andrew completed a Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering at the University of Melbourne, and later worked for Multiplex. Since lockdowns commenced in Melbourne, they spent much of their time developing business plans and solutions for a range of industries. In 2021, James and Andrew successfully launched Kepple, which is a start-up tech development company offering support to industries that are late adopters or who lack adequate resources to develop technology solutions themselves. James’ insight in the education sector, specifically with sourcing Casual Relief Teachers (CRTs), led to another venture with Andrew. With a growing number of experienced teachers leaving the education sector, the difficulty in finding CRTs and the discrepancies in pay received by relief teachers,

presented an opportunity to find a solution for both schools and CRTs. Spark Relief Teachers was launched in February 2022 and utilises technology to streamline the booking process for casual relief teachers. In short, an efficient booking service that not only matches casual relief teachers by locality to their closest school but also allows schools to organise relief teaching placements directly without the need for costly agency fees. It also aligns with their mission statement to ensure CRTs are paid the appropriate rate they would typically receive if employed directly by the school. James and Andrew have also employed Joshua Yi (’09) as General Manager and a Marketing Coordinator in recent months to assist them in growing the business. Spark Relief Teachers is available to download via the Apple App Store! Bookings commenced in February so both teachers and schools have been registering accounts to get the service in full swing. James recently took time to visit the school and reconnect with the OIGA.

ALUMNI NEWS - HAVE YOU HEARD? Top Act! Congratulations to VCE Music student Calum Rothnie (’21) who has been selected to perform as part of the Top Acts, VCE Season of Excellence. Calum presented an outstanding solo recital for his VCE Music performance examination demonstrating his skill on the descant, treble and alto recorders. He performed a wide range of pieces from composers such as Telemann, Sammartini and Australia’s own Ross Edwards. The highlight of Calum’s program was his delicate and haunting

interpretation of ‘Music For A Bird’ by contemporary composer Hans-Martin Linde which he performed at the Melbourne Recital Centre on the 21st of March 2022 at Top Acts. Students from the current VCE Music class had the opportunity to attend the Top Acts concert to witness the best of the VCE Music performances from across the state and to support their former classmate. Since completing his VCE, Calum has commenced a BA in Sociology at the University of Melbourne.

Snippets Dr Nathaniel Swain (’05) has been featured several times recently in The Age with his contemporary perspectives in improving literacy in schools. From his post-school career as a speech pathologist, Nate has embraced education with passion and is now a prep teacher and instructional coach at Brandon Park Primary School. He started a community of teachers committed to the science of learning in 2019 and his article ‘Literacy as easy as A,B,C? Not in all Victorian Schools’ in February received considerable coverage in the Fairfax Media.

Brianna Ablett (’21) may have finished her schooling at Plenty Campus last year but she couldn’t completely cut her link with the School. In addition to her Bachelor of Media and Communications/Bachelor of Business studies at Swinburne University, Brianna is now working as the Alumni Intern in the Development Office.

On 31 January 2022, seven alumni Fede Frew (’14), Angela Kang (’14), Alice Chernishoff (’19), Khushi Jadhav (’20), Danny Nguyen (’20), Matthew Tran (’20) and Tom Wang (’19) spoke to our current Year 12 students about their experiences post Ivanhoe Grammar School. The alumni were able to share advice on topics such as study tips, university courses, pathways and studying overseas. It is always wonderful to have our alumni ‘give back’ and impart their knowledge and experiences to our current students. Thank you to Fede, Angela, Alice, Khushi, Danny, Matthew and Tom.

Sophie Day (L) & Sophie Reid

Congratulations to Sophie Reid (‘15) on her debut for the Victorian Women’s Cricket Team against Tasmania in March. Sophie, a lefthand opener and wicketkeeper, joined fellow alum and Victorian left arm spinner Sophie Day (‘16) who took two wickets on the day. It is the first time that two women alumni have played in the same State cricket team together.

The Old Ivanhoe Grammarians First XI Cricket Club has done it again! On Saturday 12 March, the team won the Jack Quick Shield in a sensational grand final against Dennis, winning in the final over, with four balls remaining and three wickets in hand. Founded in 1989, the OIGCC now

fields four teams – three of which won through to the 2021/22 finals - and has built a reputation as one of the most exciting and spirited clubs in the district. Maintaining close links to the School and the OIGA, the team has won flags in both the Heidelberg District and the North Metro Cricket Association. Congratulations again boys on another trophy for the cabinet! Ivanhoe Grammar School has lost one of its great supporters in the passing of Jeannie Corlett last November. Her two sons Tim and Simon attended The Ridgeway Campus while her daughter Vicky McPherson is a past staff member at Buckley House. Jeannie was a long-serving President of the Ivanhoe Parents Association and a highly respected and loved member of the school community. She was also the daughter of F O Watts, who was Chairman of the School Board and a Life Governor of the School.

Coeducation arrives at Ivanhoe Grammar School! One of the most dramatic changes to Ivanhoe Grammar School took place thirty years ago in Term 1, 1992 when five girls in Year 7 and five in Year 5 walked through the gates to join over 200 male students at Plenty Campus. Coeducation at Ivanhoe Grammar School was considered many years before it became a reality. In 1965, Richard Stowell, Headmaster of the Memorial Junior School, proposed the concept of a coeducational junior school as a joint enterprise with Ivanhoe Girls Grammar School. Victor ‘Jock’ Brown also pursued the idea of coeducation during the last years of his leadership at the School. Parents and students had little idea that these options were even being explored or considerations made for the possibility of coeducation in the future. While coeducation may have been born of economic expediency, it has brought cultural changes and significant benefits to the entire School. We wish to mark the enormous contribution that coeducation has brought to the School since then, and have invited two girls Sara McColl (‘97) and Felicity Doherty (nee Mendola ‘97) - from that inaugural intake to recall their memories from those days three decades ago.

THE BROWN AND WHITE

Why was Ivanhoe Grammar School chosen for you? Sarah: My parents had been looking at different private schools and it seemed like I’d be going to Braemar College (an hour’s bus ride each way!) but Ivanhoe confirmed it would be accepting girls into the 1992 intake at Mernda which was a huge relief. Felicity: I attended a few School tours with Mum in 1991 but Plenty Campus just felt right. Before we moved to Yarrambat, my brother Ross had attended The Ridgeway Campus so a connection to the School was already in place. What was it like to be just one of ten girls at the School in 1992, and how did it change through secondary school? Sarah: I’d attended a very small rural primary school with about 20 students in total from Prep to Year 6. I was also happy to be going to a smaller school and wasn’t fazed by the girls to boys ratio. The school made a huge effort to integrate us from day one and Deputy Head Kathy Boburka took us under her wing and made sure we settled in. I also found it amusing that the Mernda Campus (as it was then known) was seen as somewhat of an object of

curiosity by The Ridgeway Campus boys. We were definitely the little country cousin and were greeted with improvised sheep noises of ‘meeerrrrrrnda’ whenever we had trips to Ivanhoe. I think we almost persuaded them that we had no electricity and did all of our lessons in tents. Felicity: It was a lovely environment. I didn’t feel at any time ostracised by the boys and they were very accepting of us. I played basketball with them and in some respects, they were very protective of the girls. It was a special community. The only time it felt different was when the two campuses joined for Assemblies or whole school events, we used to get looks from The Ridgeway boys. I don’t think they really knew there were girls at Mernda! Best aspects of the School? Sarah: The extra-curricular activities from sport to orchestra, and school musicals to cadets. I loved all of them. In Year 7, I joined the cricket team and was the only girl in the ASGV cricket competition which caused a bit of controversy amongst some of the boys’ schools. I remember an away match against Peninsula Grammar and walking out to the wicket to hear astounded boys in the outfield saying ‘It’s a girl!’

I managed to hit a boundary off the first bowler - probably down to his shock rather than my skill. The outdoor activities were a favourite. I remember doing our ‘24-hour solos’ in the bush at Charnwood in Year 9 and settling down for the night, completely alone for the first time, listening to the sounds in the trees and scrub, and hoping the stories of terrifying wild bush pigs were a myth. Cadet camps were also a great adventure, camping in our sections in our hoochies and tramping around national parks counting our paces in rather comical camouflage with compasses and maps Felicity: The teaching staff were all very supportive. We had a close relationship with Mrs Virginia Creed, Ms Kathy Boburka, Mr Ken Whitechurch, Mr Rod Summerton and the Head of the campus Mr Ian Rule. They were all terrific and really took as under their wings. As a current parent, I have noticed Plenty Campus has the same community environment that I remember as a student. It has certainly grown in size over the last 32 years with far more girls, and I am grateful that my children can take advantage of even more opportunities at the school today.

Fond Memories Sarah: I have lots of fond memories of so many of my fellow students and particularly the staff. From my first form teacher Mr Pollard who settled us all in, the steady leadership and care of Mr Rule and Mrs Boburka, the entertaining Mr Whitechurch and his cheesy jokes, along with lots of other fantastic, inspirational and dedicated teachers like Ms McEncroe, Mrs Clarkson, Miss Douglass, Mrs Creed, Mr Le Plastrier, Mr Davies and Mr de Dear. I think a school can only ever be as good as its teachers and we were incredibly lucky to have the best of the bunch. Felicity: One of my best memories was being a part of ‘The A Cappella Group’ which consisted of myself, Kristie Long, Christine Nesnass and Kelly Burton. We performed at soiree nights, assemblies and all over Melbourne including the Rod Laver Arena for the basketball semi finals. We even performed for teachers at their weddings! Cadets and camps were lots of fun. I am so glad we did it but am sure it was a lot of planning for the teachers. The boys had communal showers and cabins, but we (the girls) were driven by the teachers to separate sleeping quarters and even had a small ensuite in our cabin!

Your year as Captain and the first female School Captain Sarah: I was very proud to be appointed as the School’s first female captain and was also the Senior CUO of Plenty Campus cadets that year. Standing at the front of the annual Passing Out Parade is one of my proudest memories from Year 12. Looking back now it seems incredible to me that the shy 12-year-old who started in Year 7 was confident enough to take on those roles. It is testament to the ability of the School and its incredible staff who were so skilled at encouraging, nurturing and stretching all of their students. During my six years at the School, I also formed some fantastic friendships that have lasted to this day. I was lucky to be surrounded by a cohort of incredibly fun, creative and talented fellow students who supported me and were a great bunch of people with whom to have spent that special time. Sarah McColl is a Senior Lawyer at the BBC London. Felicity Doherty is a nurse at the Austin Hospital and a parent of Plenty Campus students.

REMEMBERING TWO GREAT ALUMNI

Stuart Warmington - The School’s Artist There is no doubt that virtually every Ivanhoe Grammar School student since the 1950s, as well as staff and the wider Ivanhoe family, have seen these illustrations at some time or another, but very few would recognise the name behind these images. G. Stuart Warmington (’39) who became known for his body of illustrations of many of the School’s most famous buildings, passed away in January 2022. Stuart attended Ivanhoe Grammar School from 1937 to 1939, attaining first class honours in drawing. Commencing architectural studies at RMIT in 1940, his course was interrupted by WW2 whereupon he and his twin brother Ian enlisted with the Australian Army before being discharged in 1944. At the end of the war, he resumed his studies and became a Fellow of RMIT in Architecture. In 1948, he won the highest award of the Melbourne University Architectural Atelier – The Grice Bronze Medal – for architectural design. Specialising in the preservation of historic buildings, he was also an honorary architect to the National Trust.

10

THE BROWN AND WHITE

Stuart commenced his own architectural practice and was engaged by both private and public clients. This included Sunshine City Council which commissioned an ambitious masterplan for a new civic centre, which was realised in several stages between 1962 and 1967. His illustration of Ivanhoe House (above left) was used as the masthead for various School publications including the long running student news sheet The Spectator (1948-1985). It also featured on the front page of The Hoe, a journal of the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians which ran from 1955-2001. Ivanhoe House was a landmark building of the district and formerly the property of Mr & Mrs H A Wilcox, who sold it in 1920 to Ivanhoe Grammar School. In 1985, he was commissioned to design and illustrate ‘A Vision Splendid’, a portrait of the School in pen and ink drawings commemorating its first 70 years. The book depicts the places where events happened rather than the people involved, and his detailed sketches and text evoke many memories for staff, students and the wider Ivanhoe community who know and recognise the buildings.

Stuart was a kind and gentle man, architect and artist, with a love of books and music, and a memorable sense of humour. Stuart passed away just five weeks before his 100th birthday.

Mr Allan Pizzey with his wife Mrs Ann Pizzey

Allan Pizzey With a surname as synonymous with Ivanhoe Grammar School as ‘The Ridgeway,’ we were saddened to hear of the passing of Allan Pizzey (’57) in late November 2021. His family name is one of the most significant in the School’s history. His father George William Pizzey was Dux of the School and School Captain in 1925, and became the first Alumni Chairman of the School Council (now Board of Governors) in 1964. Many members of the Pizzey family have attended Ivanhoe Grammar School, while Allan’s aunt Athalie Pizzey married Jack Benson, the longest serving teacher in the School’s history. Born in 1939, Allan began at Ivanhoe Grammar School in 1944, completing his schooling in 1957. He was Captain of the Memorial Junior School in 1950 and School Captain in his final year. A towering, athletic figure, Allan was a fine, all-round sportsman and student. He played for the First XI, the First XVIII and was a member of the School Athletics Team. He was also involved in the debating team and theatre productions. After leaving school, Allan joined the national building company E.A. Watts and became a Director of Fletcher Watts Group in 1980. In 1983 he formed his own company, Pizzey Noble Pty

Ltd, a project management company specialising in the construction and building industry. Many of Melbourne’s prestigious buildings were constructed under his supervision including the development of Southbank and the World Congress Centre in Melbourne. His contributions to public and private enterprise were further recognised through his many directorships which included Yarra Valley Water, Victorian Public Works Department Building Group, Ivanhoe Girls Grammar School and St Michaels Grammar School. Allan was made a Life Governor of Ivanhoe Girls Grammar School in 1992 after more than 17 years as a Board Member. Allan maintained a lifetime commitment to Independent Education and in 1987, was appointed to the Board of the Association of Independent Schools of Victoria. During the period of his Chairmanship, he represented Victorian Independent Schools as a Board member on the National Council of Independent Schools’ Associations.

Allan was an inspirational benefactor and a loyal friend and advocate of the international education program ‘Tournament of Minds’ for many years. ToM is an Australian educational program for primary and secondary students to develop problem solving skills across various disciplines. Allan is a member of the Ivanhoe Grammar School’s Gallery of Achievement, joining his brother John (’63) in that elite group. John had a long and distinguished career with Alcoa; was a past Chairman of the International Aluminium Institute in London and past Chairman of The London Metal Exchange. John is also a Life Governor of the School. Allan is survived by wife Ann, children Sarah, Georgina and Katherine and six grandchildren, two of which are Ivanhoe Grammar alumni.

He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours of 2007 for services to education in the independent sector and to the building and construction industry, particularly in the field of Project Management and Consultancy.

AROUND THE SCHOOL

2022 School Leaders Congratulations to our 2022 School Captains Aroha Gupta and Samuel Bevacqua (Plenty Campus) and Ruby Grinter and Luke Malara (Ridgeway) who along with our prefects took part in an official Oath Signing Ceremony at Plenty Campus late last year. We wish them success in their roles for the exciting year ahead.

Fiona Devlin – New Head of Plenty Campus Following an extensive search in 2021, Ivanhoe Grammar School is delighted to announce the appointment of Mrs Fiona Devlin as the new Deputy Principal/Head of Plenty Campus. She will replace Dan Brown who, after five years in the role, has moved to the Gold Coast as Principal at Emmanuel College. Fiona’s experience, leadership and commitment are well suited to the future growth and direction of Plenty Campus. During the interview process, it was most evident that Fiona’s educational philosophy, care for students, capacity to build community and values are strongly aligned with ours. She comes to the School with broad management, wellbeing, curriculum and pedagogical experience from both within Australia and overseas. Fiona is currently the Acting Principal of Hunter Valley Grammar School in NSW. She has held numerous other roles at schools

12

THE BROWN AND WHITE

including Head of House, Director of Sport, Director of College and Community Engagement, and Deputy Principal and Head of the Senior School. In her current role, Fiona has facilitated a range of important changes in key areas of school administration including ICT and compliance. She has also created student voice groups, focused on a series of staff development initiatives, a new wellbeing framework and most significantly led the school through the COVID-19 pandemic. Fiona, her husband Lloyd (‘94) and their children Elise and Cory will join the Ivanhoe community effective from Term 2, 2022. Mrs Renata Rowe was the Acting Deputy Principal/Head of Plenty Campus for Term 1, 2022 and we thank her for her capable leadership during this time.

Kayaking stars In January, our Ivanhoe slalom paddlers, staff and parents travelled to Eildon to compete in the Australian Junior Whitewater Championships. The team was again successful in achieving both individual and team highlights, including winning the Australian Junior Teams title. Incredibly, that’s now 15 years in a row that the team has enjoyed success in the Australian Junior Teams events! We were particularly proud of our class of 2021 cohort who competed in their last event for the School. They have been a wonderful group of young leaders throughout their six years with the team.

AROUND THE SCHOOL

Top class dance Year 12 student Xara Burge was invited to perform her work from last year’s Top Class Dance 2022, part of the VCE Season of Excellence. Xara has been dancing since she was three years old and is pleased that her hard work paid off. Xara performed her VCE skills-based solo on Wednesday 16 March at the Melbourne Recital Centre. Top Class Dance 2022 showcases and celebrates young VCE students from across Victoria who study performing or visual arts, technology, design or research.

IB Exhibition We are delighted that three of our IB Visual Arts students were selected for the 2022 Victorian and Tasmanian International Baccalaureate World Schools Visual Arts Exhibition. It was held at the Glen Eira City Council Gallery, Caulfield from 10 February to 6 March. The three artworks selected from the Class of 2021 are Kevin Fu’s drawing The Curse of Knowledge, Christian Martinez’ digital animation, Endless Road and Simona Veljanovski’s incredible embroidery, Roots. Athletics Australia’s biggest race day. The U20 3000m is regarded as the most prestigious junior race in Australia. As a 17-year-old, Thom was considered well outside the favourites who had come from all over Australia, making his strong win even more impressive.

Running in Deek’s footsteps Congratulations to Year 12 student Thomas Diamond who recently won the De Castella Under 20, 3000m on Australia Day at Lakeside Stadium Albert Park, part of the Zatopek 10,

In December 2021 he ran an Athletics Victoria 1500m race in an extremely fast 3 min 47, which qualified him for the world U20 Championships in Colombia this August. We wish Thom all the best for his IB studies this year and his incredible running pursuits!

Oz Open starter One of the great past-times in Melbourne in January is to attend the first Grand Slam tennis tournament of the year at Melbourne Park. Sixteenyear-old Ivanhoe Grammar schoolboy Cooper Errey, now in Year 11, competed in the Australian Open Junior Boys Singles event in January, which included nine Australians in an international field of 64 players. He also played doubles with Charlie Camus from Australia. Playing his singles match on one of Melbourne Park’s show courts, Cooper was up against a highly ranked Canadian in Jaden Weekes and pushed the 17-year-old all the way but eventually went down 5-7, 6-7. “It was an amazing experience playing in the Open, especially in front of the home crowd. And to be sharing practice space with the likes of Barty and Tsitsipas was unreal!” The good news is that Cooper will still be eligible to play Juniors again next year with his aim to compete at all four majors in 2023. Congratulations Cooper!

DEVELOPMENT OFFICE

L-R Wayne Motton, Ashley Sharples, Andrew Taylor New President Wayne Motton (’77) welcomed First Nations Program Coordinator, Andrew Taylor, to our first Ridgeway Club function in March. Andrew gave a presentation about the First Nations Scholarship and his role at the School. A good time was had by all.

Development Activities Hopes were high for the resumption of normal Development Activities in 2021 but all plans were thrown into disarray with the return to lockdown for the greater part of the year. However, whilst face-to-face contact was curtailed, we were able to hold a successful limited Annual Appeal with an emphasis on scholarships. Other avenues of fundraising included personal pledges to scholarship, the new Sports and Aquatic Centre and the establishment of several new prizes. With additional support from our “Friends of” groups and the Ridgeway Club, a substantial amount was raised for the School.

This will establish the ‘Doris Rowse and Evelyn Buckley Scholarship’ enabling a student to attend Ivanhoe Grammar School who may not otherwise have the opportunity to do so. Colin was a recipient of a scholarship as a student and wanted to ‘pay back’ the educational gift which he received. We also send a warm welcome to our new OIGA Life Members to the Class of ’21 and look forward to meeting in person at the various events scheduled during the year.

An important area of Development is our bequest program where benefactors commit to leaving a portion of their estate to the School. Bequest donors may, for example, designate buildings, scholarships/ bursaries, or prizes for their gift. Alternatively, they may leave it to the discretion of the Board of Governors to use as seen fit at the time the gift is received. Recently the School received a generous bequest from the Estate of the Late Colin Rowse, Class of 1946.
