IVAN DYE JR. 2ND YEAR PORTFOLIO

“LEAD WITH WHO YOU ARE, NOT WITH WHAT YOU DO…”

EVEN FROM A YOUNG AGE, I KNEW I HAD A PASSION FOR DESIGN. THERE IS SOMETHING EXTREMELY SATISFYING ABOUT TAKING AN IDEA, BEGUN IN ONE’S MIND EYE, AND BRINGING IT TO LIFE.

COMBINED WITH

MY PASSION FOR SERVING OTHERS, THIS INNATE DESIRE TO CREATE, LED ME TO BEGIN MY JOURNEY IN THE FIELD OF ARCHITECTURE AND HAVE NEVER LOOKED BACK.

PERSONAL DESIGN STUDIO

In 1923, Mies van der Rohe commenced a project for a residence in Potsdam-Neubabelsberg. Never realized past conceptual stages, only a plan of the project, coined “Brick Country House,” exists. Resultant of an analysis of this work by the German architect, Oρίζοντας is a modern adaptation of the precedent. There are clear allegorical references made through the use of materials and hierarchical organization. Introducing the function of a 1,200 square foot office and studio is a modern twist to a renowned Modernist design.

HUESTON WOODS NATURE CENTER

Δένδρον Άλσος DÉNDRON GROVE A NATURE CENTER IN HUESTON WOODS

Who doesn’t love tree houses? Acknowledging a coveted haven of most everyone’s childhood, Déndron Grove blends architecture and nature in a celebration of the flora indigenous to greater southwest Ohio. The nature center complex is divided into three main nodes, including classrooms, an exhibition space, and research facility, each connected through covered skywalks in a gesture that resembles a tree. As one progresses towards the lake, attention is shifted from the evergreens, to the deciduous species, to reed-like plants near the water’s edge in the form of each building. The complex is united through the use of materials, relying heavily on granite, cypress wood, glass, and steel.

STACK SHIFT

CLIFTON YOUNG ADULT LIBRARY

351 LUDLOW AVENUE CINCINNATI, OHIO 45220

The concept for this library is “stacking the deck.” In the literal sense the forms in the building and the form of the building itself is comprised of overlapping geometries offset from one another. Figuratively, the playful approach of architecture that is in sharp contrast with the the surrounding buildings of Clifton, creates a bait and switch. What appears to be a funky, cool building is just an traditional library.
