PROPOSAL FOR

THE INTERVENTION ON A FACADE OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL “JOVAN POPOVIĆ” IN NOVI SAD Independent project | April, 2013.

Existing white and gray facade with light green venetian blinds (which were not replaced from when the school was built - in 1984. and not fully functioning) give somewhat boring and sterile appearance of an institution for children. In order to enhance their enthusiasm for going to school and make it a happy place, I made this proposal for simple, yet effective intervention by changing the colors of venetian blinds on school windows. Every classroom has their own color while blinds on the hallway windows are neutral color. Due to eventual problems with replacement of blinds in the sports hall I left them intact and arranged the color combination around this room. 4

Concept of souvenir shop is based on the principles of sustainable architecture and ecological building. In this case this refers to utilisation of existing objects that can be found in different construction frames being, most often, out of function. By their reconstruciton and addition of new enviromentaly friendly and recyclable elements they form a structure according to functional requrements of given programe. Following world trends in this architectural area there can be found a number of examples where shipping containter appears as a modular element whose modification and/or multiplication give atractive structures with different purposes. There are several great advantages over fixed structures. From economic point of view a big saving is acheived, they are easily movable to another location and also susceptive to major inter ventions without violation of its construction firmness.

SOUVENIR SHOP

Several different factors influenced the choice of shipping container as main element of the structure for the souvenir shop. Beside the fact that it is usable for different purposes, It perfectly fitted the tasked volume with its’ dimensions of 20ft (6m x 2.4m x 2.6m). It also has a simbolic character in regard to the given location and its’ new purpose. Shipping containter is direclty linked to Danube transport and at the same time it is a storage space. As the location where it is predicted to stand is a tourist bouts port and it stores souvenirs of Novi Sad, its’ task is to offer them to tourists who would transport them further on. 1 1

Being made of steel, the structure is additionally isolated from the inside, rooftop is slightly inclined and from the outside it is coated with non-heating spread that prevents overheating during hot days. For the same reason it is dyed in white and city logo, as a destination mark, shows on a facade as an attractive visual element.

THE FENCE AND THE GATE for SERBIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH OF THE ACSENSION OF THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD in Novi Sad

Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments of Novi Sad | April, 2011.

2 0

HISTORICAL FRAM E Serbian Orthodox Church of the Ascension of the Holy Mother of God - Ascension church - is a monument of extraordinary significance which resides in the frame of historical center of Novi Sad. Its’construction started in 1765. on a site of the original Ascension church from 1736. and final works were finished in 1776. Until 1749. the entombment in the church port was practiced, therefore there are still several graves of significant urban people from that time in the vicinity of the church structure. Biggest desolation of the church port happened in 1979/80. when it was almost completely destroyed together with Uspenska street and a row of houses in Jevrejska street, due to construction of Serbian National Theatre on its’ place. In 1975. the parish house close to the church was destroyed and in 1979. the workers deconstructed the port, removed the gate and the fence made of wrought iron, without the consent of the parish and took them away in the unknown direction. In the end, Ascension churh is the only church in Novi Sad without the fence while the remained tombstones are being walked over by the passers on a regular basis.

CONCEPT

Concidering the facts that the original fence frame and the urban context have changed from when it was first constructed and that there are no precise documents of the original fence design but only few old photographs that hardly capture its’ image, the complete reconstruction of the old fence was not an option. Another issues that influenced new design were the requirements for more transparent fence than the original one was, the need for its’ harmonious implementation into very heterogeneous and stylistically diverse urban surrounding while respecting the religious character of the buikding that is supposed to be framed. At the same time, existing low wall covered with white stone plates was to be kept and implemented in the new fence structure as it has the function of retaining wall for the ground denivelation facing the theatre.

The solution was minimalistic design with modern technical approach that includes only vertical bars connected beneath the ground with a reinforced concrete strip. The existing wall part here serves as a foundation base for the bars and its’ renovation is planned by the replacement of old stone covering plates with new ones of the same kind. At the same time the design is reminescent of the original one which is reflected in emphasizing the parts that represent the former masonry columns between the wrought iron fence by dense instalation of 20cm higher bars. Also, the same material as of the original one is used in a design - the wrought iron. The gate needed a special attention as it had to emphasize the entrance and the character of the place. Columns on both sides of the gate continue the aesthetic of the existing low wall with white stone covering, They offer a place for the typografic designation while the gate itself implements a cross as the visual designation of the church. The gate is fixed to the ground with a rotating mechanism on one side and relies to the ground with a small cartwheel on the other side thus facilitating its’ opening. Locking is planned by connecting it to the right column. The gate remains open during the day and closes when the church closes its’ doors.
