Instructor Profile:

Overview: The world of data modeling and database design has developed over the last 40 years or so, largely within the information technology industry. The world of semantics and ontologies has developed over about 2500 years within the worlds of philosophy, linguistics, and more recently, artificial intelligence. The time has come to bring these two bodies of knowledge together. The word ontology describes the branch of ancient Greek philosophy that concerned understanding the nature of what exists. What characteristics are essential to the definition of something, and what characteristics are "accidental"? If you replace a car's fender, do you still have the same car? What about if you replace the engine? Is the engine's horsepower an essential characteristic of the car, or an accidental one? These questions were no easier when they were talking about chariots. In modern times, the word has come to describe a catalogue of terms describing a particular domain (such as a corporation), and the rules required to form assertions about those terms.

David C. Hay President, Essential Strategies, Inc David C. Hay has pioneered in the use of process and data models to support strategic planning, requirements analysis, and system design since the late 1970s. In 1993, Dave founded the Houston-based consulting firm Essential Strategies, and, through it, developed enterprise models for many industries, including pharmaceutical research, oil refining and production, film and television, and nuclear energy. His work has been instrumental in identifying the fundamental structure of metadata and has helped hundreds of practitioners address issues of semantics in organization. ...more
