FROM THE EDITOR…

The race is on... Growing up, whenever I was in the UK, I used to love watching the TV show 60 Minute Makeover. The idea was (and still is) that the crew would go in to one lucky person’s house while they were out (with the help of a sneaky friend or family member) and renovate a number of rooms in just one hour. The homeowners were always so shocked when they came home, but they were also always incredibly grateful (there was a lot of crying). It’s not surprising, either; most of these rooms were drab, dreary and rather depressing. But, with a little lick of paint, a few stylish ornaments and a couple pieces of budget-friendly furniture, the designers transformed the entire house, and these peoples’ lives, in no time at all. So, I was very excited to hear two of the designers who featured on this great British show, Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan, are heading to Yas Mall’s Fashion Hits Home event (turn to page 10 for more) to revamp a few more rooms (in just 30 minutes this time!). Prepare for some comedy and drama (hopefully no tears this time), and, perhaps, also pick up some tips that’ll help you transform your own home and life. See you there!

Fashion Hits Home...

It’s easy to find a house – it’s making that house a home that’s the challenging part. Do you want a minimalistic abode or a more shabby-chic vibe? Perhaps it’s the coastal style that floats your boat instead of the more Hollywood glam approach. Or how about something a little more traditional over transitional? There are a lot of questions that need answering before you step into that home store, which is why Yas Mall is making it easy for you. For five days, from Tuesday October 3 to Saturday 7, Abu Dhabi’s most popular shopping centre is gathering some of the top minds in interior design for a five-day event, dubbed Fashion Hits Home, that’ll have you feeling confident about choosing the perfect throw for that new sofa in no time. Here’s what they’ve got planned…

Local businesswoman Mthayel Al Ali (see page 22 for more) will be on hand to show you how to transform and organise your home office space so you never want to leave. Then international interior design stars Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan will then use Home Centre products to each design a stunning space – and YOU will choose your favourite one, crowning a winner in the Battle of the Rooms. MEET THE

Dymanic duo Scottish lifestyle gurus Colin and Justin are coming to the UAE to teach us a thing or two about chic interiors

18 EMIRATES HOME

FASHION HITS HOME

We simply want to share good things with good people

F

rom the rustic cottages of Scotland to urban apartments in Canada, Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan have crossed the Atlantic to share their love of great design. The Scottish stars are interior designers, style commentators and all-round lifestyle gurus, who have hosted their own TV shows, including Colin and Justin’s Cabin Pressure, Game of Homes and the BBC’s The Million Pound Property Experiment. This dynamic duo also regularly rubs shoulders with the rich and famous, interviewing A-list celebs on the red carpet. On top of all that, they’ve also penned three bestselling books and frequently write columns for publications like The Toronto Sun and The Huffington Post. Originally, Colin studied Local Government while Justin read Psychology, but the pair shared a passion for home design. “Our goal is simply this: to share good things with good people,” they say. And so, with an abundance of inspiration (and a shortage of cash), they pursued their dream career in a world of luxe linens and fancy furniture, eventually landing their first big break on a Scottish TV programme called Summer Discovery.

The even bigger break came a few years on, when they were invited to front famed BBC show, The Million Pound Property Experiment, which saw them buy, renovate and sell properties across Britain. Numerous TV shows later (including the UK’s 60 Minute Makeover, in which they transform three rooms in precisely one hour!), the two decided to move to North America, where they set up Colin and Justin’s Home Heist, which airs in 25 countries, including the UAE. Colin and Justin’s Cabin Pressure came next, a show in which they undertake a complete overhaul of a rustic log cabin in Ontario, Canada. Oh, and this is while they’re also resident design experts on Cityline, Canada’s biggest morning show, regularly appear on chat shows, write more books, AND run their product line, Colin and Justin Home. It’s fair to say these savvy Scots are busy, and yet they’ve still found time to fly in to Abu Dhabi to share their expertise with us at Yas Mall’s Fashion Hits Home show. Watch, twice a day for five days, as they each work live on stage to transform a room in just 30 minutes. Once they’re done, the audience will vote on who designed it best. So, no pressure then, lads!

any modern woman. Luxe fabrics meet psychedelic prints and feminine silhouettes, as well as a touch of vintage. HOW IMPORTANT IS A MATTRESS TOPPER?

They’re a good option for those who have purchased a mattress that is too firm for their needs. Just as you need good posture when you stand up, your spine should be perfectly aligned while you’re sleeping, so a mattress topper can assist the mattress in alleviating any pressure. HOW DO I CLEAN IT?

HOW CAN I CREATE A BOUTIQUE HOTEL LOOK WTH MY MATTRESS?

Purchase the biggest bed that you can afford and that will fit in your bedroom comfortably. Sleeping on a mattress that is too small increases the likelihood of disturbed sleep, so investing in a plush mattress featuring natural fillings will add a real sense of luxury to a bedroom environment. To add even more comfort, invest in good quality bed linen made from natural materials such as cotton and silk. WHAT TYPE OF MATTRESS IS BEST FOR KIDS?

This all depends on the age of the child. Teenagers should select a mattress in the same way an adult would – the right mattress for them will all depend on their height and weight. For toddlers and small children who may be coming out of a cot and into

Use a warm, damp cloth to gently rub the affected area. It’s important that you leave the mattress where it is, to avoid any moisture spreading further into the mattress. If you have a mattress that contains natural fillings, it’s best not to vacuum it as this can dislodge the fillings and sometimes pull them out.

their first bed, it’s important to remember not to get a mattress that is too firm, in order to correctly support them as they continue to grow. A mattress that adapts to the sleeping position of a child and ensures perfect postural support throughout the night means that a little one is less likely to experience disturbed sleep.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU FLIP A MATTRESS?

HOW CAN I CHOOSE THE BEST MATTRESS FOR ME THAT WILL LAST?

When choosing a mattress, it’s important that you lay on a potential new one in your usual sleeping position for at least 10 minutes. It’s important to remember that you’ll be sleeping on a mattress night-after-night for a number of years, so the cost per night of a more highvalue mattress works out at much less than you may initially think.

This all depends on whether or not a mattress is single or dual-sided. For a single-sided mattress, it should be spun once a week for the first three months after purchase, then after that once or twice a year. Dual-sided mattresses should be turned as well as spun regularly in the first three months so that fillings settle evenly. After that, dual-sided mattresses should be turned with the seasons. HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU CHANGE A MATTRESS?

We advise that you replace your mattress between every seven and 10 years, to ensure you’re still receiving the correct postural support you need, as well as for hygiene purposes.

EDOUARD ROSCHI CO-PRESIDENT, LE LABO TELL US ABOUT LE LABO.

The world has changed in the last 11 years… back then, there was very little choice in perfumery for someone who was tired of the marketing tricks played by the designer brands and wanted to wear a great, spectacular, creative perfume. We wanted to propose an alternative – in the perfume itself, but also by sharing the back-stage of perfume creation, sharing the craftsmanship behind a true fine fragrance. By working with the best perfumers in the world, by making every perfume to order, by a permanent reverence to craftsmanship, we decided to

challenge the status quo. We launched our first boutique in Nolita, New York in 2006. WHAT ARE YOUR STORES LIKE?

The Le Labo store looks and functions like a perfumer’s lab. You can smell the ingredients that are sitting on the shelf, you can see them in their different states. Our lab technician will walk you through our collection and some of the dozens of perfume ingredients we have behind the counter. As a matter of fact, in our Paris store in Le Marais, we have more than 600 ingredients, a first in the world. Our labs

are like an entertainment park for the nose. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE ITEM IN THE COLLECTION?

Oud 27, Thé Noir 29. DO YOU PREFER ANY INTERIOR BRANDS?

Not really. They are all interesting for different reasons and for different segments; chairs, lamps, etc. WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?

Continue to enjoy what I do with my business partner. Create new things and open new locations that people will find beautiful, such as our latest lab in Abu Dhabi.
