Promoting Critical Thinking among School Students Independent Thought has been engaging with School Children to facilitate and provide them the scope to break Page | 12 from the stereotype of boxed patterned way of thinking, liking, and living. iThought believes that the circle of Critical Thinking, Independence of Thought and Action Based on Reasons; has to be inculcated, praised and promoted in our children and youth, in their best interest and to curb various evils which has engulfed our social fabric and governance system. Critical Thinking is about allowing every child to have a critical view of the surrounding; the environment should allow the child questioning anything and everything before one accepts. The society and adults should promote an environment where questioning is seen as an expression of inquisitiveness and critical thinking rather than being a deviant. Once a child sees the world around critically, they are bound to have an Independence of Thought. Such children will not only be better informed as to what is right and wrong, with reasons; but would also be socially contributing. We would be creating better citizens for our society and nation. With a critical mind and independence of thought, our children would subscribe or indulge in only Actions Based on Reasons. Neither they will get into irrational behaviour nor will they allow others to indulge in unjustified actions. Such vigilant children are the need at levels of both home and society; politics to governance. One might have a representative democracy and legal mechanisms and tools such as Right to information, but if the mind is not free and able to think and question; even democratic governance becomes tyrant. Once a child is able to identify rationality in actions of others and oneself, through critical thinking; the child would have an Independent Thought.
