FAIRS & FESTIVALS

HOLI Spring is welcomed in style during Holi. There isn’t a single spot in any town that’s not covered in coloured powder. Even the people are splashed from head-to-toe in paint. You’ll soon see why it’s called the festival of colour. Locals and tourists alike come out to the streets to celebrate this fun-filled festival. Holi has many different rituals. The celebrations start with bonfires in the centre of the city. Effigies of Holika are then burnt, symbolising the triumph of good over evil. The next day, the ashes are swept away for the play of colours. Everyone gets involved, splashing coloured water everywhere.

Holi takes place on 23rd March 2016, 13th March 2017 Our favourite places to witness the festival of colour are Jaipur, Udaipur or Jodhpur.

DIWALI If you’re in India during Diwali, no festival will ever seem the same again. The party takes over every city, town and village. Diwali celebrates the victory of light over darkness. When the sun sets, the world gets brighter with the thousands of candles, colourful lights, sparklers and fireworks that ignite every street. It’s a beautiful burst of light, peace and happiness. You’ll need a sweet tooth for Diwali. Everyone shares sweets with a real fervour. Families greet guests, showing off their lights and prize meals. And what better way to celebrate the return of Lord Rama and his wife Sita than with a five-day festival every year.

Diwali takes place on 30th October 2016 and 19th October 2017 Our favourite places to witness the festival of light are Jaipur, Varanasi, Amritsar, Delhi and Udaipur.
