Winter at Skógafoss Waterfall

Suggested Itinerary Ask a Regent Iceland Explorer to tailor-make this itinerary Day 1 Fly to Reykjavík | Arrive at Keflavík International Airport, collect the hire car and drive to the Icelandair Hotel Reykjavík Natura for a two night stay. Relax after the journey with a dip in the hotel’s indoor geothermal swimming pool (additional charge), or dine at the hotel’s Satt Restaurant serving wonderful dishes with ingredients sourced locally.

Day 5 Flúðir to Vík | Drive to Iceland’s rugged south coast, perhaps visiting Þórsmörk Nature Reserve or the sixty metre-high Skógafoss waterfall en route. Stop to walk on the black sand beaches of Reynisfjara before arriving in Vík, where the pounding Atlantic surf has carved a dramatic coastline. Check in at the Icelandair Hotel Vik for two nights. Day 2 Reykjavík | Enjoy a free day to explore Iceland’s compact capital. Perhaps stroll down Laugavegur shopping street, stopping for a warming hot chocolate at one of the many cafés, or head to Perlan for wonderful views of the city and surrounding mountains from the revolving restaurant. (B)

Day 6 Vík | Choose to explore the village or make use of the hire car to discover the highlights of the south shore. Just over a two hour drive away is Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, a visual spectacle where huge chunks of ice calve from the glacier and crash into the lagoon below. Return to the Icelandair Hotel Vik and perhaps dine at the hotel’s Restaurant Berg with fabulous views towards the Reynisdrangar Pillars. (B)

Day 3 Reykjavík to Flúðir | Begin the journey into the heart of Iceland’s spectacular countryside. Drive between the trio of natural wonders known as the Golden Circle – Þingvellir National Park, Gullfoss waterfall and the bubbling springs of Geysir – before arriving at the Icelandair Hotel Fludir. After dark, head to the hotel’s outdoor geothermal hot tubs and watch for the northern lights overhead. (B) Day 4 Flúðir | Take to the road and explore the surrounding area. Perhaps visit the nearby Secret Lagoon where it’s possible to watch ‘Little Geysir’ erupt every few minutes from the steaming waters of the natural pool. Return to the Icelandair Hotel Fludir and relax with a drink from the outdoor bar as day turns to night. (B)

Day 7 Vík to Reykjavík | Make the return journey to Reykjavík, perhaps stopping at Friðheimar to learn about the geothermal greenhouses, and to try some of the delicious local produce. Check in to the Icelandair Hotel Reykjavík Natura for the final night. (B) Day 8 Reykjavík to the UK | Travel back to the Reykjanes peninsula. A visit to the region’s famous Blue Lagoon (pre-booking advised) is highly recommended – relax in the geothermal spa renowned for its rejuvenating white silica mud.
