ITALIAN WEEK 2021

A NOTE FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Italian community in Ottawa is a force. Our mission this year was to make that force more visible and inclusive to a wider audience, and as always, to invite Ottawa to join us in celebrating the best of what it means to be Italian. As Italians, we already know how to make homemade pasta. We wrestled with nonno in the giardino, and are always up for an aperitivo on a hot June afternoon. Through our masterclasses, we wanted to highlight these traditions for the audiences that didn’t learn these things from their parents or their nonni. That’s not to say that if you aren’t Italian, you didn’t have your own traditions. Italian Week is about a cultural exchange, and some of the things that Italians do best are universal to many cultures. We celebrate the simultaneous softness and toughness of our grandparents, we connect over food and drink, we tell stories to our children, and we celebrate our traditions. We hope that you will find these themes present across all of our events. With these themes in mind, we’re so pleased to announce the winner of our visual art commission, “Nonna” by artist Laura Kelly, which you will find on the cover of this program book. Keep flipping for more details on her piece! We would like to express our sincerest thanks to the City of Ottawa, the Province of Ontario, and the Government of Canada, as well as the Ottawa Festival Network, the Italian Embassy, and our wonderful sponsors and donors. We are especially grateful to the local small businesses who have supported Italian Week for many years, and invite our audience to visit italianweekottawa.ca to check out all the people who make Italian Week possible, and make an extra special effort to support these businesses. We look forward to connecting with you online to celebrate the wonderful impact that Italians have on our Canadian culture. Ci vediamo! #ITALIANWEEKOTTAWA #SONOITALIANO

OUR FESTIVAL BOX In a world where everything is increasingly digital, Italian Week decided to focus on real, tangible traditions this year, and why they still matter. Traditions in gardening and food are closely tied to the cultural and community values Italians embody. To help you celebrate the tangible traditions with us from home, we assembled festival boxes this year, with the support of our amazing sponsors and partners. A portion of these boxes were also donated to the exceptional frontline workers across the City of Ottawa, who have worked so hard to keep us safe and healthy during this ongoing pandemic. Italian Week would like to thank Ferrero Canada, ItalFoods, and Lee Valley Tools for their generous donations to our boxes. We would like to acknowledge the fabulous print work done by Whiskeyjack Media, who helps make us look fantastic in your hands. Thank you to iXceed Packaging Solutions for generously supporting Italian Week by donating the 2021 festival boxes. iXceed is a locally owned and operated business with over 30 years of industrial packaging and moving boxes experience. All of their moving boxes are made in Canada, pet friendly, and 100% biodegradable. Keep them in mind for the next time you need some moving boxes! Thank you to Gopher It Deliveries for partnering with Italian Week to safely deliver the 2021 festival boxes to your door!

ITALIAN WEEK 2021

CAPTURE THE SPIRIT OF LITTLE ITALY Italian Week invited local visual artists to enter our very first juried visual art contest with this year's theme to capture the spirit of Little Italy. The jury conducted a blind evaluation of the submissions. We are excited to announce that the jury selected "Nonna" as the winning piece, created by local artist, Laura Kelly. Her art will be featured prominently in this year's festival, in our promotional material, and as our feature image for Italian Week 2021. Italian Week would like to thank our jury members for bringing their unique perspectives and expertise to the decision-making process: Amanda Gorman, Dom Laporte, Jose Palacios, Claudia Salguero, Lauryn Santini, and Rémi Thériault. Thank you to Wallack’s for supporting Italian Week.

ABOUT LAURA KELLY

“Nonna” by Laura Kelly

Laura Kelly is a young Canadian artist that uses acrylic paint as her medium of expression. Laura did not attend any formal art institution for her post-secondary education. Instead, she pursued her interest in the evolution of communication and modern culture's constant need to consume media. She recently graduated from the Media, Information, and Technoculture (MIT) program at Western University. In her work, Laura explores themes of connection, self-love, loneliness, and the mundane details of everyday life. Her acrylic portraits, with their piercing eyes and life-like quality to them, may remind you of someone you have seen before but can't quite recall where. Like a stranger passing by on the street, or an old family photo, her portraits may strike a yearning for someone you once knew, but can no longer remember the name of. artbylaurakelly.com | @art_laurakelly
