College of Engineering YOUR ADVENTURE BEGINS HERE.

Electrical Engineering

Electrical engineering Iowa State’s electrical engineering program has a wide range of resources and services to help you be creative in your field of study and life. Your adventure will take you places you can’t begin to imagine!

It beg

g is an adventure.

gins here. Discover your passion Electrical engineers are at the foundation of all electronic devices—such as your mobile phone, laptop, tablet, LED lights and your car. They create technologies that connect the world and work in various industries from power and communications to health care and avionics. Electrical engineers: D evelop wind, solar and traditional energy systems and make hybrid electric vehicles run. D esign controls and communications systems for smarter robots. H elp victims of brain injuries. C reate biosensors to monitor crops. E nhance image processing and diagnostics instrumentation used in hospitals. D evelop nanotechnologies to study microorganisms. D esign computer chips to speed up networks and processors. C ommunicate with high-orbiting satellites.

Electrical engineers are in high demand. They work not only with traditional electric power systems, but also enjoy careers in emerging areas of alternative and renewable energy, biomedical imaging, consumer electronics and wireless communications.

ENGINEER YOUR FUTURE Many of our graduates have built successful careers not only as engineers, but also as managers, entrepreneurs, sales representatives and consultants. The average starting salary of electrical

engineering graduates is almost $63,000/year.

Co-op and internship salaries for

our students average $19/hour.

More than 500 companies visit the

College of Engineering each year to recruit our students.

98 percent of our electrical engineering

students have in-profession placement within six months of graduation.

Be greater than you imagine The electrical engineering major at Iowa State offers the latest technology, cutting-edge research and world-renowned faculty—making it one of the best programs in the country. Freshman engineering lab: Get hands-on experience during your first year in our freshman engineering lab. This is a great opportunity to experiment with infrared imaging, magnetic levitation and GPS units. Specialty areas of study: C ommunications and signal processing E lectromagnetics, microwaves and nondestructive evaluation E lectric power and energy systems M icroelectronics and photonics S ystems and controls V ery large scale integration (VLSI) design

Career options Electrical engineering is highly interdisciplinary work, giving you plenty of career options in nearly any industry imaginable. Consider these career area options: E nergy: Help the world go green! Design solar, wind and traditional electric power systems and make them more secure, reliable and affordable. I nformation: Create human-like robotic systems and enable them to communicate and learn. Solve problems in electronic controls for aircraft flight control systems, car antilock braking systems and more. ioengineering: Develop therapies with ultrasound, magnetic waves B and other technologies to help doctors treat cancer and other diseases. Make biomedical imaging technology more valuable so MRI signals and images are easier to process and read. E lectronics: Enhance the speed, materials and flexibility of electronics we work and play with every day. Work with lasers, make computer chips smaller and faster and improve solar energy and smartphone technology.
