College of Engineering YOUR ADVENTURE BEGINS HERE.

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Civil and environmental engi Iowa State’s civil and environmental engineering program has a range of resources and services to help you be creative in your field of study and life. Your adventure will take you places you can’t begin to imagine!

It be

ineering is an adventure.

egins here. Discover your passion. Civil and environmental engineers leave their legacy by designing systems and structures that save and protect lives. The work is service-oriented with global impact! You can make water safer, protect people from the elements, conserve the environment and make travel safer. You might design structures like highways, water treatment plants, malls and manufacturing facilities. You can also evaluate transportation systems such as roadways and bridges to determine deficiencies and make recommendations for future development. Our civil engineering graduates work for a broad range of employers such as the Department of Transportation, Corps of Engineers, Forest Service, Federal Reclamation Programs, Department of Natural Resources, and the Environmental Protection Agency. Other career options include consultants, private firms, major corporations, government agencies or business owners.

Be greater than you imagine Whatever your goals are, your success is important to us! Our programs, labs, hands-on learning and facilities will give you a competitive advantage to address society’s greatest needs.

ENGINEER YOUR FUTURE Many of our graduates have built successful careers not only as engineers, but also as managers, entrepreneurs, sales representatives and consultants. The average starting salary of civil

engineering graduates is almost $55,000/year.

Co-op and internship salaries for our

students average more than $19/hour. More than 500 companies visit the

College of Engineering each year to recruit our students. 94 percent of our civil engineering

students have in-profession placement within six months of graduation.

Integrated curriculum: Our integrated curriculum combines class assignments, projects and team development with professional training in communication, ethics, accounting and management. Because each project is unique, we focus on problem solving based on an analysis of the environment, climate, materials and public needs. You will learn how to write proposals, work with subcontractors, plan, budget and mediate difficult situations. Experienced faculty: Our faculty work with professionals in the field to research and develop: T ools for assessing the structural safety of materials used in buildings vulnerable to earthquakes, tornados and hurricanes. G PS machine-integrated soil compaction technology. W eb-based roadway and airport weather observation systems. I ce-free and snow-free pavements. L aser scanning and video technologies in the transportation industry. W ater and waste treatment strategies that provide a quality supply while extracting usable energy and reducing adverse impacts on our environment.

Unique learning opportunities and facilities: You will learn in state-of-the art labs and facilities including: Center for Transportation Research and Education, Joseph C. and Elizabeth A. Anderlik Teaching Laboratory (environmental engineering), Bridge Engineering Center, Portland Cement Concrete Pavement and Materials Research Laboratory, Structural Engineering Research Laboratory, Wallace W. and Julia B. Sanders Structural Laboratory and the Soil Mechanics Laboratory.

Core Curriculum Our program offers options that make our students versatile in the job market. Select an emphasis in: E nvironmentaI: Remove contaminants from water, reduce hazardous and solid waste volumes, eliminate air pollutants and develop groundwater supplies. G eotechnical: Develop projects below ground and determine ways to support structures on and in the ground. Optimize mixtures for pavements and other structures by developing methods to stabilize soil conditions. Structural: Design structures that can withstand winds, extreme temperatures, hurricanes, earthquakes and other natural forces. Transportation: Determine ways to meet the increasing travel needs of people; goods; and materials on land, air and water.
