Steps 3,4 and 5! Step 4:
Step 3: One of the embalmer's makes a cut on the left side of the body & removes many of the inner organs. It's important to remove these organs because they're the first part of the body to decompose (rot).
The liver, lungs, stomach & intestines are first washed and then packed with natron which will dry the organs. BUT, the heart isn't taken out because they believed that it was the centre of intelligence & feeling & they will need it in the afterlife.
Step 5: A long hook is used ti destroy (smash) the brain & pull it back out through the nose
Step 6,7 and 8! Step 6: Now, the body is stuffed and covered with natron which will dry it out.
Step 7: After 40 days, you wash the body (again) with water from the Nile.
Step 8: You cover the body with oils to help the skin stay elastic.
Step 9 and 10! Step 9: The dehydrated inner organs are wrapped in linen & returned to the body. Now that we did that, the body looks life like because it's stuffed with dry materials.
Step 10: The body is covered again with oils. Now, the body is ready to be wrapped.
In the past, the inner organs were removed from the body and put in the canopic jars. But over many years, the embalming practices changed, and the embalmers started putting the inner organs back into the body after the boy was dried in natron. However, the solid canopic jars were still buried with the mummy to symbolically protect the inner organs.
The human headed god, Imsety looks after the liver.
The falcon headed god, Qebehsenuef looks after the intestines.
The baboon headed god , Hapy looks after the lungs.
Duamutef the jackal headed god, looks after the stomach.
Wrapping the mummy! STEP 1, 2, and 3 ! 1) In soft strips of fine linen, you wrap the head and the neck first. 2) Then the the fingers and toes are wrapped individually. 3)Between the layers of linen, the embalmers MUST place amulets to protect the body its journey through the underworld.
Steps 4 ,5 and 6 4) While the mummy is being wrapped, a priest reads spells out loud. These spells will help prevent the spirit from the evil spirit and help the deceased make the journey to the afterlife. 5) The arms and legs are tied together. 6) Between the wrapped hands, you put a papyrus scroll with spells from the "Book of the dead".
Step 7,8, and 9 7) More linen strips are wrapped around the body; the bandages are painted with liquid resin that helps glue the bandages together. P.S.resin is a stick, thick fluid produced by certain trees/plants.
8)A cloth with a picture of the god Osiris on the surface is wrapped around the body. 9)You wrap the entire mummy with a large cloth. The cloth is attached with strips of linen that runs from the top of the mummy to the bottom of the mummy, and around it's middle.
Just a few more to go ! Steps 10, 11, and 12! 10) A board of painted wood is placed on top of the mummy before the mummy is lowered into its coffin. The 1st coffin is put inside a 2nd coffin! 11)The funeral is held for the deceased and his/her family feel sadness about his/her death. 12) A ritual(religious ceremony) called the 'Opening of the mouth' is performed, allowing the dead to eat & drink again.
Steps 13 and 14! 13)The body and its coffins is placed in a large stone sarcophagus in the tomb. Furniture, clothes, valuable objects, food & drink are arranged in the tomb P.S. a sarcophagus is a large stone wood box in which for the dead. coffins were placed for burial. 14)Finally, his/her body is ready for the journey! There, his heart will be judged by his good deeds on earth. If his heart is found to be pure and serene, he/she will be sent to live all eternity in the beautiful "Fields of Reeds".
THE END!!! NOW YOU KNOW HOW ITS DONE! BUT REMEMBER! DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!!!
