We are delighted to be able to partner with the ISM and present a piano masterclass with David Owen Norris, exploring how composers used the unique qualities of the piano to give expression to their musical inspiration and ideas. This will be available on the Radio 3 and ISM websites. Roger Wright, Controller BBC Radio 3 and Director of the Proms says ‘The piano is a single instrument that has the ability to convey a range of emotions and the power of a whole orchestra and BBC Radio 3 will be celebrating it as part of a special season of programming this autumn. As part of the season we are thrilled to be able to offer listeners and ISM members alike an insight into this great instrument through a very special masterclass with celebrated pianist David Owen Norris. Piano Season on the BBC embodies everything that makes Radio 3 unique, offering listeners a distinctive range and depth of classical music, jazz and discussion and we hope you will join us on-air and online to discover more about this wonderful instrument.’ Elsewhere on the BBC, BBC Four will broadcast six one-hour documentaries about the concerto finalists at the 2012 Leeds International Piano Competition, as well as a selection of documentaries featuring the piano. And later in the autumn, Imagine on BBC One tells the story of an extraordinary life in music as the Chinese child prodigy turned global phenomenon Lang Lang turns 30.
As Lang Lang also says when talking to Radio 3 about what the piano means to him; ‘the word “piano” means “my best friend”, my absolute love and passion. The piano connects to our heart… it is a combination of symphony and opera in one instrument.’ Whether you already love the piano, have a family member or friend who plays, or you just love listening, join us on air and online to celebrate this most powerful and exciting of instruments this autumn.
