The main purpose of the association is to work toward continued freedom of the road by insuring that motorcyclist’s point of view is presented to our legislators and to promote motorcycle safety, rider education and public awareness. We are trying to alleviate the very real possibility of “Big Brother Government”. We encourage all our members to be informed registered voters. We write letters to our elected officials and stay aware of what is going on with motorcycle legislation, and other transportation issues. We welcome interested parties to any of our activities or to join our organization.

The following are excerpts from presentations provided by Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). The MMA is actively participating in discussions and workshops as the Commonwealth moves forward with a plan that has the goal of Zero fatalities. While this is an admirable goal and the MMA supports the ideal of zero fatalities, we are watching closely so that motorcycles are NOT eliminated from the roads altogether and that our Right to Ride is not lost. The SHSP is mandated to be complete and submitted to the Governor before the end of 2022. Check out the link to the brochure for more details. Kevin G Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) • Federally mandated plan, being developed by MassDOT -statewide multi-disciplined plan to reduce fatalities and injuries on roadways. • Goal: zero fatalities and serious injuries on roadways in MA. • Plan critical now because, while 5-year average of fatalities and serious injuries has decreased slightly, we are not trending to zero, especially with number of fatalities during pandemic. • Last plan was in 2018. • We are considering a Safe System framework for the SHSP as a way to really drive down the fatalities and serious injuries to meet our long-term goal of zero https://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/zerodeaths/docs/FHWA_SafeSystem_Brochure_V9_508_200717.pdf

Don’t Kill Monson Hill The Monson Town Zoning Board of Appeals was scheduled to meet on June 23,2022 to hear from the Quaboag Riders Motorcycle Club regarding a cease and desist order at the Monson Hill Climb Track. Over 250 motorcyclists came to show support of the “Club” and to challenge the order issued by the Zoning Officer. Due to the large turnout, and not to violate the open meeting laws, the hearing was rescheduled to take place at a larger venue at a later date. Maximum occupancy of the meeting room was only 49. The Memorial Town Hall is large enough to accommodate 250 people. The Monson High School was also considered and is able to hold up to 700 people. David Beaudoin has been serving on the Zoning Board for 30 years. He is currently the Chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals which has five members. Beaudoin explained that 54 residents signed a petition in a zoom meeting against the club having violated zoning laws. According to the Monson Zoning Bylaws there are several infractions, among these are 3.3.1 applicability, 3.3.2 nonconforming uses, 6.6 earth removal and filling of land, 6.6.5 procedure for filling of land, and 6.6.6 filling of land general requirements. Club President Billy O’Donnell explained that the “Club” was established in 1944 and is one of the oldest Motorcycle clubs in the United States. The “Monson Monster” hill climb track has become a premier motorsport venue in the Northeast. On April 18 th 2019 the “Club” received an Official Citation from the Massachusetts State Senate for serving the people of the Quaboag Region for 55 years. Quaboag Riders, Inc. has retained Attorney Nick D. Amanti from the Fitzgerald Law firm to represent them. The meeting was scheduled to take place at Memorial Town Hall on July 14th 2022 at 7:00pm 198 Main Street, Monson, MA 01057. The results of that meeting will be addressed in the August issue… Bruce Arsenault ….Life Member, MMA Massachusetts Motorcycle Association Does Not Endorse Any Advertiser or Product In

DEB STOODLEY Editor

The MMA Newsletter is meant for the enjoyment of ALL of its members and also anyone who visits the website and has an interest in what it is we are all about. For this reason, I am asking once again for everyone and anyone to submit photos, articles, bikes for sale, event flyers, tips and comic strips to me for publication. Anything that interests you, may interest our readers and that is truly what this publication is all about. Think about things to help new riders, or suggestions for the best – or not so helpful gear. Are you super organized when you go away and want to share your successful motocampingpacking list? Do you have a favorite route you ride that you could suggest? Do you know of a place that really calls out to bikers that others might not know about? This would be a great place to shout out your favorite local businesses. I hope you are all enjoying the monthly newsletters so far – and have also been able to take advantage of this fantastic summer weather out there on 2 (or 3) wheels! As always… Ride safe. Email any photos or articles or share any feedback you may have with me at Dbethgray@gmail.com Here are a few of mine…

History of the MRF 1985 in St. Louis, Missouri. There, the very founders of the motorcyclists’ rights movement in America gathered for a meeting of the minds. So, at a meeting of the minds of grassroots leaders, a new leader was born: The Motorcycle Riders Foundation. The first motorcyclists’ rights advocacy organization with a full-time legislative and political presence in our nation’s capital. The only Washington voice devoted exclusively to you, the street rider. And each year, the leaders of the nowworldwide community gather for motorcycling’s premier political leadership summit — named to commemorate the gathering at which we were founded: The MRF Meeting of the Minds.
