HOA News and Information The Board wishes everyone a Healthy and Happy Holiday Season. We hope that all residents are faring well as we are in winter as evidenced by our first major snow event on December 16 & 17. We are sure there will be more snow before the end of winter. As everyone is aware, the Estate Fence is under construction and hopefully will be completed soon. The Board is preparing to address the landscaping phase of the ―Beautification Project‖. Once the Estate Fence is complete we need to have a survey done, obtain additional approval to landscape plans based on the Town‘s prior dictates and obtain quotes to do the actual work. The prior approval from the Town, as George Rice described in past meetings, was for a section of the perimeter and now once the fence is in place and an updated survey completed, we can ask for approval of the complete task. As we have discussed at many meetings there will be a special assessment for the landscaping. For those residents who are new to Setauket Meadows, the developer (The Crest Group) agreed to construct an Estate Fence at their expense (estimated at over $250,000) and any landscaping to beautify the area was for the community to address. A rough guess of the individual assessment by unit would be around $1,000. 2020 was a very unique year given the restrictions required due to the Covid 19 problem. We have abided by all Brookhaven requirements. Our hope is that by the middle of 2021 we can begin to get back to our normal activities. During 2020 we completed several major projects including the installation of a new, state of the art dehumidification system in the clubhouse for the indoor pool, painting the entire indoor pool area and power washing of all buildings. Major repairs to the STP (Sewage Treatment Plant) were also completed while maintaining the community to the high standard that we expect. The Board developed and presented the 2021 Budget in November with NO increase in HOA Fees. Hopefully, there will not be any surprises or issues and we can manage the revenues and expense without issue. The Board would like to recognize the efforts of George Rice, a member of the Board of Directors, who passed in 2020. Our thoughts go out to the Rice family. In addition, the Board would like to thank Lou Petix for replacing George‘s position. Lou is a very competent individual who served on the Board in the past. His expertise brings a much needed skill set for construction type projects while he also acts as the liaison with HPM and the Crest Group to complete the Beautification Project. Finally, we feel the community looks great and has been well maintained. We will be ready for the next summer season when we are able to open the facilities. by Joe Polizzi Farewell to 2020. With a COVID vaccine being distributed could a normal 2021 be on the horizon. Over the past year Setauket Meadows took on a new look. Only until recently the Clubhouse was shuttered and darkened. MahJong, card games, pool shooting, special social events, HOA meetings and book clubs were not played or participated in. We resorted to Zoom. Although they were conducted they only partially filled the void that is experienced by human contact and interaction with one another. The bikers and walkers who circumnavigated the community have dwindled. Golf, tennis and pickleball are being played but very cautiously. Snowbirds are waiting for their sojourn to Florida. So what is everyone doing. Most people are either quarantined or isolated in their homes. And what do you do when you stay home? EAT. We‘ve all heard of the ―Freshman 15‖. That‘s when you go away to college and adjust to a lifestyle of eating junk foods and sampling the beers of the world. SO what happens? You gain 15 pounds. Now we are in the throes of the ―Pandemic 15‖. How many of us have put on a few pounds? I know I have. It‘s inevitable. We snack on candy and ice cream rather than fruits and vegetables. We buy new appliances- air fryers, pressure cookers, pizza ovens, espresso makers, etc. What do we do with the new gadgets? We test new and different recipes and taste our new creations and taste them and taste them until ―Pandemic 15‖ happens. I have no solution for ―Pandemic 15‖ and I will not tell anyone to diet. Because that is boring and difficult. So my advice is to hang in there, enjoy your new toys and their results because life is too short and let‘s have fun while we can. Returning to ―Speaking of Sports‖ I must revisit a pet peeve of mine. I wrote about this topic a number of years ago and try not to repeat myself too often. But there it goes. What do the following names and places have in common? Myrtle Beach, Famous Idaho Potato, Camellia, Gasparilla, SERVPRO, Guaranteed Rate, Cheez-it, Duke‘s Mayo and Music City. You‘re correct if you said they are all College Football Bowl games that are played at this time of the year. And Redbox, Celebration, Fenway, Pinstripe and Bahamas were other bowl games that were cancelled. Has college football been watered down to such a point where any company can sponsor a bowl game and endorse a champion? I guess it is because ―money talks and everything else walks‖. Back in the day and after a New Year‘s Eve celebration I revived myself to watch two or three of the traditional bowl games. You know them very well- Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl. You definitely saw the best teams showcasing the best players and when you won one of those games you could call yourself a champion. But I guess I‘m showing my age and things do change for the better- I think. So with 2020 coming to a close I wish everyone the best of health, prosperity and happiness and I look forward to seeing everyone in our normal setting and enjoying everything that Setauket Meadows has to offer. Computer words and phrases are sometimes difficult to understand, so I thought I would provide you with a few explanations of frequently used ―SCAM‖ words found in the SCAM Dictionary: ARE YOU A TARGET OF CYBERCRIME? If you use a computer these days and who doesn‘t you might become a victim of cybercrime. You are using a computer right now as you read The Setalker. Just like the above SCAM Dictionary discusses, cybercrime takes many forms, most of which you will be unaware of until disaster strikes. You need to protect yourself from the cyber criminals. Not too long ago I received and email from someone I did not know which correctly stated my password. It further stated that if I did not send them $200 in a gift card, they would release my financial information to the internet. Yikes!!! As it turned out it was a scam to get me to send them money. I didn‘t send them any money but someone else who they will try to scam will send them money. Don‘t be fooled. Needless to sayI changed my password. The simplest things you can do to protect yourself is: Use 2-factor authentication for all online financial accounts. A 2 factor authentication is a 6 digit code that your web site will text or email or call you so you can use that unique code to log in to the web site after you enter your ID and Password. Each time you access that web site a different code is required. You must agree to allow your financial institution web site to do this. You might also consider it for nonfinancial sites—Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon, and Twitter all offer 2-step authentication options.  Maintain updated industry-standard operating systems and software. Keep your operating system up to date with the latest version. Do the same for your apps on your smart phone.  Do not use public Wi-Fi for your finances or other sensitive items like entering a password for one of your web sites that you frequent.  Don‘t click on links in email from what appears to be a friendly web site. The link may contain MALWARE. See definition of Malware above. Use strong, unique passwords for each web site requiring a sign in or log in protocol. 

Are You Prepared For An Emergency? An emergency is defined as "an unforeseen combination of circumstances or the resulting state that calls for immediate action." An emergency doesn't necessarily mean a disaster. It could mean that your child needs a copy of his birth certificate to register for school, or you need a copy of the pink slip for your automobile when a brand new set of wheels catches your eye. If you don't already have important papers together in a safe place, maybe this is a good month to buy a small fireproof box and gather those papers together that might include: Wills, social security cards, passports, birth certificates, divorce and custody decrees, immigration documents. Property deeds, mortgage company address and phone number, homeowners and life insurance policies and phone numbers, copies of health insurance card and phone numbers. Inoculation records, health records, doctors and dentists names, addresses and phone numbers. Auto ownership papers, auto insurance policies and phone numbers, drivers and auto license numbers. Credit card numbers, addresses and phone numbers for outstanding loans. Stock and securities certificates, address and phone number of broker, bank account numbers, addresses and phone numbers of banks.

Getting To Know Your Neighbors Creates Community In our fast-paced, stress-filled world we often don't create the opportunities that we need in order to get to know our neighbors. In days past, good neighbor relations were the staple of every strong community. Being able to share life's experiences, both good and bad, with those who live so close to us was once considered one of life's greatest blessings. These days it is the exception rather than the rule to take the time to create strong relationships with the people we share our community with...and we are each the poorer because of it. Each one of us has a story to tell, a hand to lend, a laugh to share, and friendship to give. What keeps us from extending so much of ourselves to the families that live around our own may be those same things that prevent us from experiencing many of the great blessings of our parents or of our youth: A changing world that focuses more on the individual than the family and the need to remain isolated in order to feel "safe and secure." Someone once said, "If you always do the things you did, you'll always get the things you got." If we want to grow as a community then we have to risk breaking free from the bonds of isolation that are so easily created by and for us. We must reach out to our neighbors and let them know that they matter and that we care. If we do that, even in the most seemingly insignificant of ways - like a wave as we pass on the street then we are moving toward a better community and a better way to live. Just because our culture has pushed us away from ourselves doesn't mean it is right, it just means that we have to work that much harder in order to reconnect with one another and create a better environment in which to live.

A LITTLE HISTORICAL TRIVIA Where did that saying come from? By Angelo Trombetta Did you know the saying "God willing and the Creek don't rise" was in reference to the Creek Indians and not a body of water? It was written by Benjamin Hawkins in the late 18th century. He was a politician and Indian diplomat. While in the south, Hawkins was requested by the President of the U.S. to return to Washington. In his response, he was said to write, "God willing and the Creek don't rise." Because he capitalized the word "Creek" it is deduced that he was referring to the Creek Indian tribe and not a body of water. In George Washington's days, there were no cameras. One's image was either sculpted or painted. Some paintings of George Washington showed him standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others showed both legs and both arms. Prices charged by painters were not based on how many people were to be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted. Arms and legs are 'limbs,' therefore painting them would cost the buyer more. Hence the expression, 'Okay, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg.' (Artists know hands and arms are more difficult to paint) As incredible as it sounds, men and women took baths only twice a year (May and October). Women kept their hair covered, while men shaved their heads (because of lice and bugs) and wore wigs. Wealthy men could afford good wigs made from wool. They couldn't wash the wigs, so to clean them they would carve out a loaf of bread, put the wig in the shell, and bake it for 30 minutes. The heat would make the wig big and fluffy, hence the term 'big wig...' Today we often use the term 'here comes the Big Wig' because someone appears to be or is powerful and wealthy. In the late 1700's, many houses consisted of a large room with only one chair. Commonly, a long wide board folded down from the wall, and was used for dining. The 'head of the household' always sat in the chair while everyone else ate sitting on the floor. Occasionally a guest, who was usually a man, would be invited to sit in this chair during a meal. To sit in the chair meant you were important and in charge. They called the one sitting in the chair the 'chairman.' Today in business, we use the expression or title 'Chairman' or 'Chairman of the Board.' Personal hygiene left much room for improvement. As a result, many women and men had developed acne scars by adulthood. The women would spread bee's wax over their facial skin to smooth out their complexions. When they were speaking to each other, if a woman began to stare at another woman's face she was told, 'mind your own bee's wax.' Should the woman smile, the wax would crack, hence the term 'crack a smile'. In addition, when they sat too close to the fire, the wax would melt. Therefore, the expression 'losing face.' Ladies wore corsets, which would lace up in the front. A proper and dignified woman, as in 'straight laced' wore a tightly tied lace. Common entertainment included playing cards. However, there was a tax levied when purchasing playing cards but only applicable to the 'Ace of Spades...' To avoid paying the tax, people would purchase 51 cards instead. Yet, since most games require 52 cards, these people were thought to be stupid or dumb because they weren't 'playing with a full deck'.

Early politicians required feedback from the public to determine what the people considered important. Since there were no telephones, TV's or radios, the politicians sent their assistants to local taverns, pubs, and bars. They were told to 'go sip some Ale and listen to people's conversations and political concerns‘. Many assistants were dispatched at different times. 'You go sip here' and 'You go sip there.' The two words 'go sip' were eventually combined when referring to the local opinion and, thus we have the term 'gossip'. At local taverns, pubs, and bars, people drank from pint and quart-sized containers. A bar maid's job was to keep an eye on the customers and keep the drinks coming. She had to pay close attention and remember who was drinking in 'pints' and who was drinking in 'quarts,' hence the phrase 'minding your 'P's and Q's'.

One more: bet you didn't know this! In the heyday of sailing ships, all war ships and many freighters carried iron cannons. Those cannons fired round iron cannon balls. It was necessary to keep a good supply near the cannon. However, how to prevent them from rolling about the deck? The best storage method devised was a square-based pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four resting on nine, which rested on sixteen. Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem; how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding or rolling from under the others. The solution was a metal plate called a ‗Monkey' with 16 round indentations. However, if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make 'Brass Monkeys'. Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannonballs would come right off the monkey. Thus, it was quite literally, 'Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey'. (All this time, you thought that was an improper expression, didn't you?) If you don't send this fabulous bit of historic knowledge to any and all your unsuspecting friends, your hard drive will kill your mouse.

I’M NOT OLD……..JUST MATURE Today at the drugstore, the clerk was a gent. From my purchase, this chap took off 10 percent. I asked for the cause of a lesser amount; And he answered, ―Because of the Seniors Discount.‖ I went to McDonald‘s for a burger and fries; And there, once again, got quite a surprise. The clerk poured some coffee which he handed to me. He said, ―For you seniors, the coffee is free.‖ Understand – I‘m not old – I‘m merely mature; But some things are changing, temporarily, I‘m sure. The newspaper print get smaller each day, And people speak softer – can‘t hear what they say. My teeth are my own (I have the receipt), And my glasses identify people I meet. Oh, I‘ve slowed down a bit….not a lot, I am sure. You see, I‘m not old….I‘m only mature. The gold in my hair has been bleached by the sun. You should see all the damage that chlorine has done. Washing my hair has turned it all white, But don‘t call it gray….saying ―blond‖ is just right. My car is all paid for….not a nickel is owed. Yet a kid yells, ―Old duffer…get off of the road!‖ My car has no scratches….not even a dent. Still, I get all that guff from a punk who‘s ―Hell bent.‖ My friends all get older….much faster than me. They seem much more wrinkled, from what I can see. I‘ve got ―character lines,‖ not wrinkles….for sure, But don‘t call me old….just call me mature. The steps in the houses they‘re building today Are so high that they take your breath all away; And the streets are much steeper than 10 years ago. That should explain why my walking is slow. But I‘m keeping up on what‘s hip and what‘s new, And I think I can still dance a mean boogaloo. I‘m still in the running,,,in this I‘m secure, I‘m not really old….I‘m only mature.

Patches of garden that seem to sprout nothing but weeds should not be written off. ―If you can‘t grow anything else,‖ says gardening and food writer Sally Freeman, ―herbs are the answer.‖ Herbs have a long, noble history. They‘ve been used to flavor food, prepare medicinal brews, beautify gardens — even line the pockets of merchants, as they tried to fill the demand for herbs and spices during the Middle Ages. Growing herbs isn‘t difficult, as Freeman, author of Herbs for All Seasons (Penguin, 1991) and Every Woman‘s Guide to Natural Home Remedies (Holt, 1997), explains here. Essentials For An Herb Garden: Ideally, there are three essentials for an herb garden: good drainage, plenty of sunlight, and light soil enriched with compost. Try to keep your garden away from trees; the roots rob soil of moisture and nutrients. But many herbs will do well without all three. Rosemary doesn‘t mind some shade. Basil, fennel, dill, Italian parsley, and chives do well in soil suitable for growing vegetables. Peppermint doesn‘t mind wet conditions. Thyme tolerates acid soil, while lavender requires more alkalinity than most herbs. Indoor Herb Gardens: If your windows face south, you should have adequate light for even sun-loving herbs, such as dill, coriander, oregano, thyme, and marjoram. If your windows face in other directions, you should be able to grow rosemary, sweet woodruff, or bay laurel in natural light. You may have to augment natural light with special lighting. Be sure to place herb containers as far as possible from radiators and other heating appliances, in a room that is cool, moist, and well ventilated. On very cold winter days they should be placed away from windows. Growing From Seed: Most herbs will grow easily from seed, germinating in five to seven days. There are exceptions. Lavender can take up to a month to germinate. Rosemary is best propagated by cuttings, and French tarragon, which is more flavorful than the Russian variety and preferable for cooking, must be propagated by root division. Parsley can be very difficult to germinate. Italian parsley is easier to grow than regular parsley, and, to my mind, tastes better. Fertilizer of Choice: Compost is best because it won‘t burn the tender roots. Enrich your compost pile by including some weeds, especially dandelion, whose long roots bring up minerals from deep in the soil. A layer of mulch conserves moisture and suppresses weeds in the summer. Watering Herbs: Water herbs as soon as the soil feels dry. Rosemary, especially, should never be allowed to dry out. You may need to water every day. Your herbs will also appreciate a daily misting.

Older Americans Are Coping Best During the Pandemic If you think older Americans have struggled to cope through the pandemic, think again. According to new research by financial services firm Edward Jones, they have actually been faring far better than their younger counterparts. The Edward Jones and Age Wave Study focused exclusively on how different generations have help up emotionally and financially in the months since the lockdown began, and some of its findings are at least as startling as how quickly even 70-year-olds came to love Zoom. ―COVID-19‘s impact forever changed the reality of many Americans, yet we‘ve observed a resilience among U.S. retirees in contrast to younger generations,‖ says Ken Dychtwald, Ph.D., the founder and CEO of Age Wave, a leading research think tank on aging, retirement, and longevity issues. While acknowledging up front that the virus itself disproportionately struck aging adults, the fivegenerational sampling of 9,000 people, age 18 and up, reveals more than a few surprises. Among them: While 37% of Gen. Zers, 27% of Millennials, and 25% of Gen Xers say they‘d suffered mental health declines since the virus hit, only 15% of Baby Boomers responded likewise. Faring the best were those 75 and over – the Silent Generation that followed the so-called ―Greatest Generation‖ – with a mere 8% of those respondents reporting any mental health deterioration. That would seem to fun counter, as does the results for Boomers (age 56 to 74), to early warnings that prolonged social isolation made older adults especially vulnerable to depression, anxiety and cognitive decline. Nearly 68 million Americans have altered the timing of their retirement due to the pandemic, and 20 million have stopped making regular retirement savings contributions. Dychtwald attributes the two older generations‘ resilience to having a ‗greater perspective on life.‘ ―They‘ve seen wars and other major disruptions before,‖ he says, ―and they know that this, too, will pass.‖ Younger generations feel like, ―What happened to my life? I mean, I was supposed to go to college or I was starting a new job, and now everything has changed.‖ Most retired Boomers and Silent Gens also had monthly Social Security checks to fall back on. Which explains why – though the pandemic has significantly reduced the financial security of a quarter of Americans – younger generations were slammed the hardest. Nearly one-third of Millennial and Gen Z respondents characterize the impact as ‗very or extremely negative,‖ compared to 16% of Boomers and 6% of Silent Gens who admitted to similar hardship. Looking for any silver lining that‘s come out of the COVID-19 crisis? 67% of respondents did say it‘s brought their families closer together. ―The pandemic has certainly thrown into sharp relief what matters most in our lives,‖ says Ken Cella, Edward Jones‘ client services group principal. ―And important discussions have taken place about planning earlier for retirement, saving more for emergencies, and even talking through end-of-life plans and long term care costs. Thinking of Adopting a Dog? Pets have so many positive qualities – having a pet lowers our blood pressure and cholesterol, improves our mood, increases our exercise, offers companionship, guards against loneliness and depression and improves our social lives and our work/life balance, making us rethink our priorities. If you also want to consider amping your social life (even during a pandemic) studies show dog owners are much more likely to know their neighbors – one said about 50% of dog owners made new friends as a result of their dog, since dogs are natural icebreakers. Research different breeds first. ―Breeds that were bred for companionship, such as Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Shih Tzu and Maltese are good options: they‘re more likely to want to lay on your lap or cuddle on the couch next to you,‖ says Dr. Heather Venkat, Arizona‘s public health veterinarian. ―Working dog breeds, like a hyper husky that likes to pull or a Belgian Malinois, might not be the best choice.‖, which offers adoptable pets from almost 11,000 shelters and rescue groups in North America, has a breed-finder that makes it easy. You can read descriptions of different dog breeds and their energy, playfulness and affection levels, exercise and grooming requirements, ease of training, vocality (barking) and friendliness to other dogs. Usually, it‘s chemistry and/or love at first sight,‖ says Madeline Bernstein, president of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Los Angeles and author of Designer Dogs: An Exposé: Inside the Criminal Underworld of Crossbreeding (Apollo Publishers). ―That said, your lifestyle and overall well-being are relevant. Is the dog highmaintenance, requiring more exercise outings and more trips to the groomer, and what about your ability to lift, restrain, control and medicate the pet?‖ Older vs. Younger? A puppy is active, energetic, needs house-breaking, training in basic commands like ―stay‖ and ―leave it‖ and lots of attention, is prone to chewing things but is, let‘s face it, cuter. An older dog is more sedate, potty -trained (one hopes), needs less exercise and its personality is solidified – but is more likely to have medical issues (and their costs). Balance the adorability factor, and the problems associated with babies and toddlers, with the known-quantity factor and the challenges that accompany aging. ―Who wants a puppy, peeing and pooping everywhere, jumping up all over you and your guests? Chewing your shoes?‖ asks Sherri Franklin, founder of Muttville, a rescue group for senior dogs in California, bluntly. ―Most senior rescue dogs come with some training and all are so grateful for their new beginning. They soak up the love and they fit like an old comfy pair of slippers! Often, the dog is used to living with a senior, since we take in many dogs from seniors, so it‘s a win-win.‖ For adopters 62+, Muttville has a Seniors for Seniors program, offering free adoption (normally $200) plus a month‘s supply of food, leash, collar, food bowls, dog bed and, if needed, a dog gate or stairs. Pros and Cons Save an older dog’s life. ―Adopting an older pet may save its life. Many people are quick to adopt kittens and puppies, often overlooking older pets,‖ says Dr. Amanda Landis-Hanna, senior manager of veterinary outreach at PetSmart Charities, the leading funder of animal welfare groups in North America. ―Older pets are calmer and less energetic. Don‘t assume they‘re ‗problem animals,‘ she says. Older pets may be relinquished for reasons usually having nothing to do with their behavior or temperament – a move, allergies, a new baby, a change in work schedule, or a job loss, among other reasons. Meat Shortages Mean It‘s Time to Try Plant Based Protein During times of change, many of us find comfort in simple pleasures like a great burger. Use WiFi Hotspots Safely WiFi hotspots sound like the perfect solution to accessing the Internet in public, especially if you have limited data or poor mobile service. Many mobile carriers offer hotspots, or maybe you use public WiFi at the airport, a favorite coffee shop, or even your dentist. Some carriers will also automatically connect you to public hotspots, but only if the WiFi connection is secure — if a secure network isn‘t available, you can manually choose to connect to an unsecure hotspot. But no matter where you use them, it‘s important to take steps to keep your personal information safe before you hit that ―connect‖ button. What are the dangers of public hotspots? As convenient as public hotspots can be, security concerns exist. Knowing what they are is the first step to protecting yourself. Most of the issues can be summed up in one of two ways: Connecting to the wrong hotspot. False hotspots with a similar name can be set up to capture login information, sensitive data, or to access your machine. Always make sure you click on the correct hotspot name before you connect. Lack of encryption. As your device sends information over the Internet, encryption hides it from prying eyes. Public hotspots typically don‘t use encryption, leaving your data vulnerable. How to protect yourself while using public hotspots Sending information over a public hotspot is a lot like having a sensitive conversation out in the open. While it‘s possible nothing bad will happen, other people may overhear what you‘re saying and use that information to their advantage. You can prevent this by taking these three steps: preparing your device in advance, using caution when setting up the WiFi connection, and keeping your privacy in mind as you browse and engage online. Follow these steps to prepare your device in advance: Make sure your smartphone or device has the most up-to-date virus settings. INGREDIENTS: (all ingredients can be purchased at Stop n Shop) 4 cups reduced sodium chicken broth 2 cups water 1 16 oz pkg Nature‘s Promise Chicken Sausage with Garlic and Cheese ½ of 16 oz bag frozen mixed vegetables, thawed 2 cups frozen chopped kale, thawed Parmesan Cheese DIRECTIONS: In a large pot heat chicken broth and 2 cups water to a boil on high heat. Meanwhile, remove meat from casings from the sausage. Roll into 1-inch meatballs. Transfer to a plate. When broth is boiling, add sausage meatballs and mixed vegetables to pot. To the pot add chopped kale. Reduce heat and simmer 8-10 minutes until meatballs are cooked through and vegetables are hot. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Divide among 4 bowls and top with grated parmesan.

A 5-Step Plan for Changing Banks In light of increased fees at some of the nation‘s largest financial institutions many people are considering switching banks. As consumers, we do an increasing amount of our personal banking with debit cards, and many of us have an elaborate system of direct deposits and automated payments in place. So if your savings margin is thin, switching banks requires some forethought and planning to ensure that you are not placing yourself at risk of an overdraft while you migrate your account. Here is a five-step process to consider on how to handle a bank swap. 1. Find the right bank or credit union for you. The financial institution that works best for your brother may not be the best one for you, so do your own research. It comes down to a matrix of three things for each customer: services, fees and locations. Ask yourself: How do I use my bank? Do I use a debit card and ATMs? Do I prefer mobile banking and online transactions, or do I prefer paper checks and statements? Is international access important to me? If you‘re moving a checking and savings account together, compare the interest rate earned on the savings account with the service charges on the checking account. 2. Open a new account, but leave the old one open. Create overlap between the accounts to make sure bills get paid while the new account starts to build a capital reserve. It may be useful to create an inventory or calendar of all the automatic credits and debits to the account to plan when to start moving the money. Leave a statement cycle‘s worth of overlap in the old account. 3. Shift your direct deposits to the new account. The next move is to redirect any direct deposits, like your paycheck, into your new account. This requires speaking to your employer‘s payroll department — or whichever part of the organization handles your checks — and giving them your new account information. Wait a pay cycle before taking the next step. 4. Move all the automatic payments. Contact the organizations doing direct billing and advise them of your new bank account. This could also be an opportunity to reschedule payments so that they are evenly spread throughout the month, rather than in the first half. Another strategy for credit-card holders is to use a dedicated credit card to pay monthly bills, then pay that sum in full from the checking account. 5. Write a letter to the old bank to close the account. Emptying your old account of all the money doesn‘t close it automatically. Even worse, you could get maintenance fees on that zero-balance account, which could land you with overdraft fees. So, write an old-fashioned letter to your ex-bank specifying the date the account is to be officially shut down.
