Welcome to Fall, y’all! We are so excited to share this issue because thanks to you, it’s our largest ever! Our advertisers stay with us in these tough times because you tell them you saw their ad, and we can’t thank you enough. This issue we highlight the great work that Mike Mckenna is doing in supporting the Hawaiian Humane Society with his Adopt-a-Pet events at McKenna’s Windward Ford. We have a bunch of great puppy pix for the Photo Gallery and Mutt Loved Toys. John covers the “Kibble Konundrum” in a tasty article on elevating your dog’s nutritional intake, and Faye Irvine refashions a Play Doh container to hold doo-doo retainers. We’ve sniffed out some cute stuff for your special dog or dog-centric friend in Gifts and Sniffs. And it’s hurricane season, so take a moment to check for a pet-friendly emergency shelter near you. Resident artists John Pritchett and Dan Van Zyle ponder the possibilities of being in the doghouse and the irrepressible Chihuahua, respectively. And finally, we invite you to our 4th Annual Da Kine Canine Festival in dog-friendly Kailua on September 4. Have a safe and happy Howloween, and GO Bows!

nuggets Pumpkin for Dogs For minor stomach and intestinal upsets, try adding a spoonful of 100% pure pumpkin to your dog’s food. Use the plain canned variety, not the pie filling version flavored with spices and sugar. Pumpkin is loaded with vitamins, is easy to digest and the fiber helps with loose stools and constipation. It’s low calorie and some pet owners claim it helps their overweight pets slim down. Steam, bake or roast the scooped out flesh (no rind or seeds) from your Halloween pumpkin. Feed as a healthy low-cal treat or baked into doggie treats. If GI upsets persist, be sure to contact your vet.

ike McKenna’s Windward Ford and Clear Channel Radio put the pedal to the metal for animals, driving pet adoptions and fundraising for a favorite pet charity. Under the leadership of car dealer Mike McKenna, who has served the Kailua community for over 25 years, this yearlong partnership is giving back to the community. Mike McKenna’s Windward Ford has already raised nearly $20,000 for the animals. It has also stepped forward as a Flagship Sponsor of Hawaiian Humane Society’s October PetWalk. On Sunday, July 24, Mike hosted McKenna’s Fifth Pet Adoption Event at the dealership in Kailua. McKenna also underwrites an adoption fee for one Lucky Dog of the Week at the shelter. More than 45 animals have found new homes and McKenna hopes the total will reach 100 dogs by next year. Every vehicle sold gen-

Clear Channel Radio has also pledged its support as the promotional engine. Coming aboard as a PetWalk Sponsor, Clear Channel provides airtime and prizes at adoption events including Las Vegas vacations for some lucky adopters. When asked why McKenna pledged its support to the

animals, McKenna replied, “Local charities need our help now more than ever, and Hawaiian Humane Society is not a chapter of a mainland organization like so many others. The bottom line is that I’m a dog lover and so are all of us at Mike McKenna’s Windward Ford.” The dealership staff is so avid about its love for animals that it has a Pets-AtWork policy. McKenna added,

The last thing you want to do is feed your precious pup lousy dog food. Their lives are too short and vet bills are too high to subject them to the task of processing a bunch of hardly digestible kibble from dubious sources pumped up with artificial sweeteners, additives, chemicals and preservatives. But when premium’s price per bag is so much higher, how can you afford it?

ticularly informed and interested in helping you find the best fuel for your dog. Your vet is also a good source, especially if your dog has health issues. Do a little research and find out which companies have good reputations. The Internet is alive with shrill warnings about different ingredients, but with a little knowledge you can decide what you want in your pet’s food. Pet food is regulated by the FDA, USDA, FTC and the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), the latter of which has come up with a criterion for manufacturers to label their product as “complete and balanced.” But it’s the pet food company’s responsibility to formulate their products ac-

The Price of Premium is

ven with the higher price tag, consider the long term benefits. Because premium food is easily digested, you only feed a fraction of the the amount needed by inferior products. And pet owners can attest to the transforming effects of a good diet: overall vitality, a supple and shiny coat, odor reduction from both ends, and fewer trips to the vet. Think of it as preventative maintenance. And yes, just as humans can adapt to a diet of donuts and hot dogs, some dogs seem to do fine on badly sourced foods. But also like in humans, the best diet for dogs is identified meats (not corn kernels or mystery meat), whole grains and natural preservatives. There are a lot of great kibble choices at your local Pet Store, and their staffs are par20  ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • FALL 2011

cording to the appropriate AAFCO standard. So how do you know which dog foods are better? Read the label! Don’t choose dog food by falling for marketing gimmicks. Those pretty pictures of fresh vegetables, fruit and chunks of red meat on the front of a bag are just that—pictures. They may not be present in significant enough quantities to benefit your dog. In fact, they may not be in there at all. The real story behind the food is in the ingredient list. Looking at the first 10 to 12 ingredients will give you a good indication of how good the food is. Dog food ingredients are listed by weight with the heaviest first. High quality dog foods have good sources of protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins and minerals.

PROTEIN

The first ingredient should be a named protein source such as chicken, lamb, fish or beef. Ideally, three or four of the first six ingredients should be good meat products in whole or meal form. Be wary of generic sources, and steer clear of byproducts, which at best contain things like necks, feet, and intestines and at worst contain something disgusting. How much protein is enough? A good range to look for is between 18% and 30%. Check these numbers with your pet store pal or on the guaranteed analysis on the label. Your vet can tell you if certain health conditions require more or less protein. And beware of this ploy: some manufacturers list a protein as its first

but it is unavailable to the dog. Quality foods are highly digestible, meaning your dog assimilates maximum nutrition from less food. This is where the real savings comes from, both in dollars and doo-doo.

FATS, DYES and PRESERVATIVES

Do not be alarmed when fat is second to protein in the guaranteed analysis. Fats provide energy and are needed for the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins like A, D and E, and the fatty acids are widely known to reduce inflammation and promote healthy skin and coat. But they need a preservative so they don’t go rancid. Natural protectors like vitamin E do

ingredient, but scatter multiple items of cornbased products (as an example) further down the list to hide how much corn is actually in it. Feed your dog that stuff and he literally is a corndog!

CARBOHYDRATES

Carbohydrates in the form of highly-digestible ground whole grains (such as oatmeal, barley and brown rice) are a good source of energy and fiber. But avoid foods with corn, wheat or soy as first ingredients. Although in bulk they will add protein and nutrients, unless they are pulverized they are hard to digest, offer little nutritional value and pass out of the body as bulky waste. This means that the food does contain the specified amount of protein,

not extend shelf life as long a chemicals, but are probably safer. Dyes do nothing for the dog, they are added solely to make the food look better to you.

MAKING THE MOVE

Make a gradual transition to a new food over 7 to 10 days. A sudden diet change can be a tummy taboo, resulting in gastrointestinal upset and loose stools. Start with a 1 to 4 ratio of new to old food and increase by 25% every couple of days. Once your dog’s system is humming on a quality diet, don’t be afraid to occasionally switch foods, especially from the same manufacturer. As long as the food is high quality, your dog will benefit and enjoy the variety. FALL 2011 • ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE  21

DIY DogCraft Designed by Faye Irvine Inspired by Kealani

Play-Doh Poopie Bag Dispenser ®

“Upcycle” your everyday trash and create functional items that can be used in place of costly items—in this case, those cute plastic dispensers for our doggie poop bags. I’ve created a small bag dispenser from a Play-Doh container which can hold 4-5 recycled newspaper bags. These bags work best since they are long and easy to tie off. Materials needed: • Any size used, clean Play-Doh container • 1 pony bead or button • 12" inches of ribbon (1/8-1/4" wide) • Favorite pictures from Island Dog Magazine or doggie photos • Mod Podge Matte glue (it’s water resistant) • 4 -5 plastic newspaper bags Tools needed: Junky paint brush • Sharp pointed scissors Ice pick, awl or hole punch • Old emery board (nail file). BONUS TIP: Make an extra dispenser without the hole in the bottom and fill with dog treats. Attach to your leash or backpack...no more treats crumbling in your pant pockets!

INSTRUCTIONS

CONTAINER 1. Make a hole at the bottom of Play-Doh container. Use scissors to cut a hole approximately 1.5-2cm in diameter. Smooth rough edges with an emery board so bags won’t snag. 2. Cut out various pictures from magazines or photos of your dog. 3. For ease of handling and maximum adhesion, collage the container in 3 sections — 2 halves and the bottom. Brush a section with glue and lay down pictures. Brush over each picture with a little more glue. Let dry. Repeat for remaining side and bottom. Dry the entire container for at least 24 hours before attaching the lid.

LID 1. With an ice pick/awl, poke a hole between the word “Doh” and the rim of the lid.

Play-Doh® is a trademark of Hasbro Inc.

24  ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • FALL 2011

2. Make another hole near the top of the container rim; about 1cm from the rim. 3. String bead/button onto the center of the ribbon. Thread both loose ends of the ribbon through the TOP hole of the lid and the INSIDE hole of the container until the bead is at the top of the lid and the two loose ends of the ribbon come out of the container. 4. Tie a knot at the end of the ribbon or at your desired length of dangle. BAGS 1. Cut off about a third of each bag. 2. Loosely roll one bag until you come to an inch from the end. Overlap the next bag onto the inch you left from the previous bag. Repeat until all are loosely rolled up. Place inside of the container. 3. Pull the end of the last bag rolled through the hole in the bottom of the container. Close the container with the lid and attach to your dog leash. Now you’re all set to go for a nice walk with the ONLY “person” who truly understands you!

KIS 7th grader Hannah Drake shows off her custom bag dispenser and is ready to walk the dog!

Are You Ready for Hurricane Season? Oahu’s Pet-Friendly Emergency Shelters Disaster can strike at any time—take a moment to find a pet-friendly emergency shelter near you and get your supply kit ready. Residents and pets will be on the same campus, but pets will be housed in separate rooms or buildings monitored by Hawaiian Humane Society volunteers. Household pets must be in a crate or carrier with ID tag, collar and leash. Shelters do not stock supplies. Bring several days of food, meds, etc. Listen to local media for instructions and opening schedules. Depending on the type of the emergency, not all shelters may open.
