SUMMER 2014 • ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE 11
Aloha! The Dog Days of Summer are always a time for celebration in Hawaii as the days lengthen languorously and we can spend a little more time enjoying the outdoors with our precious pooches. Go beach! Go hike! Go paddle! Go surf! Give yourself permission to slip out for an adventure before or after work and you’ll find it really perks up your week and calms your pup. This issue’s Cover Dog is the lovely Lexi, an adorable little Yorkshire Terrier who stole our hearts and our treats. OK, we gave them willingly, hypnotized by the Candy Crush of her cuteness. Mahalo to Brian Reed, who shot for us during his busy Pro Bowl gig. Check out Marichris Diga-Lazo’s story on the houndsome crew at Gone Surfing Hawaii who love it when you bring your 4LBFF with you for lessons. Just be sure he’s totally comfortable in the ocean. Your fabulous photos fill our Da Kine Canine Gallery, and the response to our Peeps & Pups solicitation were even more joyful than we could have hoped. Next up is The Great Outdoors, so show us what’cha got! Bonnie Beatson and Dan Meisenzahl chronicle the prodigious proceedings at Windward Community College’s Vet Tech program with the opening of their gorgeous new surgical training facility, a critical step in accreditation. They’ve built a really strong curriculum in a very short time— kudos to Ross Langston and John Kaya. Grand Opening festivities were even attended by Spring 2011 IDM Cover Girl Kanoa! Oh, and her owner, Governor Neil Abercrombie. We have some great advice from local trainer Carol Keale on starting out on the right paw with your new puppy. Meanwhile, resident artists John Pritchett and Dan Van Zyle cast aspersions and a careful eye, respectively, on old dog attitudes and the West Highland White Terrier. And we honor and celebrate the canine-centric life of Gerri Cadiz, who passed in February. As always, we are privileged to share the love and joy of Da Kine Canine, and we are humbled by the kindness of your attention to our little dog rag in this most digital age.
Woofs...John & Carol

OUR SUMMER COVER DOG
Our Cover Girl, Lexi, is cute, spunky, adorable, precious and precocious. Did we mention CUTE? But it’s her winning personality that lets her get away with being such a scamp. Yorkshire Terriers were bred to hunt and bait rodents in the textile mills of England in the late 1800’s, so they have an inherited sense of pluck and spirit that often manifests in being a rascal. Lucky she’s so cute! Lexi’s mom works in a dogfriendly environment, and as soon as they get to work she runs in the office and jumps on everyone’s lap and kisses them, which makes their day. And going to work means getting to play with her BFF, Sasha, a Silky Terrier. They chase each other, play ball, eat lunch and snuggle together. She also LOVES food! She’s very trainable and can High Five and Dance on command, especially if there’s a hint of a treat. Poor Gizmo (another Silky Terrier) also comes to work in the same office and she’s always eating his food. And being the gentleman that he is…he lets her. She’s just not a girl you can say “no” to! And we’re glad we didn’t. Welcome to our cover, Lexi!

ALA WAI DOG PARK
Summer Opening for New Off-Leash Dog Park Denizens of Waikiki and outlying areas are anxiously awaiting the Grand Opening of the Ala Wai Dog Park, an endeavor eight years in the making. As of late April, the City and County has advised the Ala Wai K9 Playground Association to delay the dog park opening several more weeks to firmly establish the turf in anticipation of heavy foot and paw traffic. Look for an announcement in June or July for Grand Opening details. The Association is still in need of fund-
ing to pay for park enhancements such as benches, water fountains and a kiosk. Make a donation at www.alawaik9playground.com or by mail. Checks can be made out the Ala Wai K9 Playground and sent to c/o Judith Wright 2444 Hihiwai St. Apt. 1406, Honolulu, HI 96826. The Association is a 501(c))3) non-profit organization. Mahalo to all the volunteers and supporters for their hard work in making this dog park a reality.

Oahu SPCA Introduces Zeuterin The mission of the Oahu SPCA is simply “Every healthy, treatable animal will find a forever home.” This mission is fulfilled by sheltering homeless animals and by promoting sterilization to prevent unwanted litters. The latter activity just got another, less expensive method with the release of Zeuterin,™ newly approved by the FDA. Zeuterin is a zinc-based shot that is injected directly into the center of each testicle in male dogs. The compound works as a spermicide and shrinks the testicles. The simplicity of this procedure means more dogs can be neutered in less time, in a nonsurgical environment. Zeuterin can only be administered by veterinarians and technicians who have been trained by the manufacturer, ARK Sciences.
For more detailed information, visit arcsciences.com. Because it is administered with a local, not general, anesthesia, there are no complications or deaths from “being put under.” The recovery period is generally shorter and easier than from surgery. And the testosterone level is reduced by about half rather than being eliminated completely, which recent studies have shown to be beneficial to some breeds. To make an appointment call the Oahu SPCA at 725-3165 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Oahu SPCA Capital Campaign FUNDRAISING EVENT
Casino Carnival Night Proposed Oahu SPCA Shelter Facility
The Oahu SPCA is seeking funding for a new shelter facility and sterilization clinic. The goal for the Capital Campaign is $350,000. The square footage will be twice the area of our current operations, thus greatly increasing our capacity and efficiency to sterilize and save more animals. With your tax-deductible donation, your name or logo will be placed on a custom 2'x2' tile in our central corridor walkway and featured on our website, Facebook, banners and collateral. The new facility will be named after an individual or corporation donating significantly to the project.

Cruciate Ligament Disease We love being active with our dogs—seeing my dog racing across the beach or playing at the park puts the biggest smile on my face! But sometimes I worry that she might hurt herself, and seeing her in pain would be most difficult to bear. Often a sprain of a muscle or ligament can resolve on its own with rest. Pain medications may help the symptoms, however, if limping persists it may be more serious. Nathaniel Lam, DVM, DACVS Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injury is the most common orthopedic condition diagnosed in dogs. This ligament helps to maintain stability of the knee joint. Athletic injuries of the CCL may occur, but in dogs it is usually due to “degenerative” disease of the ligament. Diagnosis can be made on physical examination and x-rays of the knee joint by your veterinarian, or by placing a small camera in the joint. Unfortunately, the CCL does not heal on its own and in most cases without stabilization, dogs remain lame, in pain, and develop progressive arthritis. Also, 50% of dogs may injure the opposite knee so intervention after diagnosis is important. Talk to your vet about your dog’s lameness today. CCL might be the problem!

Hey brah, no be one kook, pick up da poop!
Did You Know? Pet waste contains bacteria that pollute streams and the ocean, leading to closures of our island’s favorite beaches. If left on our yards, sidewalks and beaches, it washes to the ocean, polluting the waters where we love to surf, paddle, snorkel and fish. What Can You Do? Pick up your pet waste and dispose of it properly— in the trash or toilet!

Hawaii’s Dog Dignitary BY JOHN HARMON
We first met Gerri in the early 80s, shooting halftone stats of photographs for Ilio Magazine at our production studio, The Other Type. Little did we know that twenty years later we would be publishing Island Dog Magazine.
— John & Carol Harmon
HAWAII HAS LOST a giant in the local dog community with the passing of Gerri Cadiz on February 2, 2014. Dog lover, animal advocate, volunteer, civic leader, promoter and cheerleader were just some of her many canine-related roles. And, of course, she published Ilio magazine for nearly four decades with her friend and colleague Sandy Williams. Gerri was born in New York and graduated in education from Cornell University, where she met her husband of 55 years, David Cadiz. They moved to Hawaii in the mid-60s and were settled in Kailua by 1970. She worked with the Department of Education for over 15 years, teaching mostly at Kailua Elementary School. A love for the family Cocker Spaniel blossomed in 1977 from training and showing her dog into the venture for which she would become best known. The new Ilio magazine gave Hawaii’s dog devotees information on animal legislation, veterinary care and breed standards as well as captured show results for confirmation, obedience and agility. Early publication was accomplished 40 ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SUMMER 2014
by Gerri typing and Sandy laying out the pages with a waxer and X-acto knife on the kitchen table or, for more precision, on a grid taped to the window so the lines showed through. As technology evolved, roles reversed with Sandy now inputting the type and Gerri laying it out on the computer and handling the pictures with her scanner. Their dedication produced over 270 issues in a 37year printing history. On any given weekend in Hawaii Gerri could be found at one or more of the dog events chronicled in her magazine as a fan, participant or show-runner. She just loved dogs and
the people who owned them. The list of organizations she was associated with is long and impressive. She served on the Board of Directors of the Hawaiian Humane Society from 1989 until her passing. She was also the Chairman of The Hawaiian Kennel for over 10 years and recruited the best judges from the United States and around the world for their twice-yearly shows. She was a habitué and supporter of the Cocker Spaniel Club, the Windward Sporting Dog Club, the West Oahu Kennel Club and still more canine groups. Gerri’s reserved public persona masked a passionate and intelligent devotion to educating owners, fostering good breeding, and sharing the joy of dogs. Her dedication will be missed.
Gerri Cadiz published Ilio magazine for over three decades. Below right, showing one of her beloved Cocker Spaniels.
Gerri was committed to humane education and the teaching of compassion and responsibility. She was first and foremost an educator and dedicated to the Hawaiian Humane Society’s mission of promoting the human-animal bond and the humane treatment of all animals. She served on our board of directors since 1989. We are so grateful for her service. Pamela Burns, President and CEO Hawaiian Humane Society SUMMER 2014 • ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE 41

ver think about taking surfing lessons and enjoying the best that Hawaii has to offer? Communing with the sun, the sand and the gentle waves of Waikiki, actually having fun exercising. What could be better? How about having your canine compadre join you! At Gone Surfing Hawaii, the team of eight surfing instructors live the motto, “Less Work/More Surf” because being in the ocean isn’t just their job, it’s a lifestyle and they love it. What they also love is when clients request to bring their furry friends along for the ride. 44 ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SUMMER 2014
“Most of my instructors either own a dog or have brought a dog surfing, so it’s always fun for us whenever we get a chance to bring a client’s dog out on a surfboard,” says Gone Surfing Hawaii owner, Joanne “Jojo” Howard. “We love seeing clients who have never surfed before get excited when they ride their first wave. But what’s greater is seeing the look of excitement on the owner’s face when they see their dogs also ride their first wave as well.” The Gone Surfing team has taken out dogs ranging from terriers to bulldogs and retrievers and safety is

Major Milestone for Windward Veterinary Technology Program BY BONNIE BEATSON & DAN MEISENZAHL
shley Natividad is an animal lover and a veterinary technology, or vet tech, student at Windward Community College. It’s the only college in Hawai‘i that offers degree and certificate programs for veterinary paraprofessionals, which was great news for Natividad. “I thought first you need to transfer and go to the mainland or online, so it is really good that I can stay here at home and get my career,” said Natividad. The program reached a significant milestone in the spring 2014 semester with the official opening of the new $2.1 million Veterinary Technology Annex, a 2,000 square foot addition to the college’s Hale ‘Imiloa Science Complex. “This is a state-of-the-art facility that will train our students how to use x-rays, do surgeries, dental procedures,” said program director John Kaya. “So it is very instrumental to give a good solid, educational background for knowledge and skills for our students.” The facility includes an x-ray room, surgery room with two surgical tables, canine ward with six kennels, feline and exotic animal ward with 16 pet condos and a large treatment room that accurately mirrors a typical veterinary hospital or office. “It is an operational veterinary hospital minus the waiting room and reception area,” said Kaya. “This is the final piece of the puzzle in order for us to get national 48 ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SUMMER 2014

received provisional accreditation in 2013. State and community leaders along with faculty, staff, students and their pets were on hand for the dedication ceremony. Governor Neil Abercrombie even brought his dog, Kanoa. “I believe this program will be a
driving force in the advancement of animal health,” said Abercrombie. The governor and other state lawmakers also talked about making certification for veterinary technicians mandatory by law. “Without that certification, vet techs could well be hired without the training, and they could be practicing on your pets,” said Dykstra. The veterinary technology program at Windward Community College is an intensive, two-year, 70-credit program that requires many hours of animal handling. Students receive training in pharmacology, radiology, anesthesiology, surgical assisting, dentistry, nutrition and veterinary office procedures and also have to
intern at two clinics and or shelters. This experience allows students to hone and apply their skills in a realworld setting and serves as a bridge to future employment. “Historically, 80 to 90 percent of students get jobs right away, and some students in the program are getting hired by clinics even before they graduate,” said WCC Chancellor Doug Dykstra. It has given Natividad and students like her a chance to pursue their dreams. “Because I love animals and I love working in the medical field,” said Natividad. “And eventually I want to become a technician specialist in emergency and critical care.”

THE PUP By Carol Keale, Certified Dog Trainer
here’s nothing more exciting than bringing home a new little puppy. Just realize that he is a clean slate, and it’s important to begin training the moment he enters his new home. Having a professional assist you in laying the ground rules will help ensure a happy and healthy life with everyone in the family. Each breed has characteristics that may be hard to deal with. Read up on the breed you decide to invest your time, money and love in, so that you have a better idea of how to focus your training methods. Some breeds are smarter than others, some are easier to train than others, and some have shorter attention spans. Talk with friends, breed clubs and trainers about the breeds you are considering. This knowledge will give you realistic expectations of your puppy’s learning curve. Have a family meeting and set up “House Rules” before puppy comes home. For example, are you going to allow him in the bed or on the furniture? Will you use peepads, crate training, outside potty training? Make sure you follow the “House Rules” consistently when 50 ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SUMMER 2014
puppy comes home, that way he won’t get confused. Remember, if you allow your puppy to repeat a behavior it will become a habit. Prepare your children on how they should treat the new puppy. To small children he may seem like another toy to play with. Teach the difference between petting and mistreatment such as hitting, tail pulling, or poking. Once he has had all his shots, you will want to begin socialization by taking walks and introducing him to the dogs you meet along the way and visiting a dog park to play. Start with basic obedience training as soon as possible: watch me, sit, down, stay, come, wait, loose leash walking and, of course, potty training. Use positive training methods only, offering rewards such as treats or his favorite toy, with positive voice commands and hand signals. Once your puppy learns these simple commands you can wean them off the treats and the voice commands and hand signals will take over. To instill a command you must get your puppy’s attention. That’s where using treats comes in handy, hence it’s best to train prior to the

dog’s main meals. To start, show the treat, say the first command (“watch me”), and hold the treat near the puppy’s nose and move it up to your eyes. As he performs the movement be sure to let him know he has done the command correctly, saying, “Good watch me, Fido.” Always use his name and let him know he has done the command correctly by awarding the treat and using your happy voice. Never punish him for not doing a command. You can even train your puppy to go potty on command by simple word association by telling him “Good Potty, Fido” every time he goes. Training sessions should be short. Dogs have a limited attention span and if you try to continue too long the dog will become frustrated and lose focus. End the training session on a positive note, making sure you can get your puppy to perform a command correctly to end the training session. That way the dog will remember the command and equate it with good things. A trainer should be able to work with your dog for approximately an hour, or until she sees signs that the dog is no longer able to absorb any new commands. It is good for the owner to
