THE WORLD'S MOST RAVENOUS PLANT IS BACK WITH A NEW BITE! This deviously delicious sci-fi rock musical follows hapless floral assistant, Seymour, who spends his days tending to sad little flowers as well as his wilting hope of a better life beyond skid row. Suddenly after an unexpected “total eclipse of the sun,” Seymour discovers a new breed of plant — a cross between a Venus flytrap and an avocado! After displaying the new find in the shop window, Seymour is catapulted to fame as the caretaker of the succulent sensation, and the whole city is buzzing! But this quickly-growing bloom isn’t as innocent as he once thought. This carnivorous, smart-talking plant has an insatiable thirst for human blood, making Seymour question just how far he’ll go for the life of his dreams. Little of Shop of Horrors is a landmark musical that has made millions of audiences laugh, scream, and give up gardening for good!

Dolphin tours, fishing trips, paddleboarding, biking, hiking, beaching, browsing local shops and sampling fresh seafood are all on the menu! No matter what your speed, Hilton Head has got you covered. In September, the weather has cooled, the locals come out to play and the fun continues!

Island Events is proud to be Hilton Head’s original guide for visitors, and it’s our pleasure to bring you the very best of one of America’s favorite islands. In this month’s issue, Doug Weaver of Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy gets into the science of putting and Captain Miles Altman of Bayrunner Tours regales us with another true fishing tale. Read on for everything you need to know

about vacationing safely on Hilton Head. HOROSCOPE ARIES

As a sign ruled by Mars, this month is due to bring you rapid changes regarding your career. Don’t hesitate to take these opportunities, but be sure to take them one at a time so as not to overload your plate!

TAURUS

This month, consider how your stubborn nature helps you move through life, and also how it affects your relationships. As an earth sign, it’s not always bad to be like water uidity can work best sometimes.

GEMINI

Let’s face it—we all know Gemini are the true chatterboxes of the zodiac! How can you focus on using speech as a grounding force during this communicationruled month?

CANCER

You often nurture others, but this is the time to be a little more selfish. You may want to start by thinking about your own, personal wants and needs, then listing them in order of priority.

LEO

This month is a good time to shift your energy away from the things you can’t control and toward what you can. Remember: letting go can be equally as empowering as taking the lead.

VIRGO

Happy Virgo season! This is your time to let plans ow more freely, since you rule grounded in communication. Make your spreadsheets and to-do lists more dynamic or rearrange your home space—beautiful things can come with the slightest of changes. 24 Island Events September 2022

SEPTEMBER 2022 LIBRA Diplomacy can lead you to being indecisive. Opposing viewpoints can be very valuable as context, but this month, relying on your gut for the answers will serve you well. SCORPIO

Be bold with your feelings! Your opinions are just as important as everyone else’s, and while silence can be powerful, you’ve been quiet for too long. When you feel passionately about something, say so!

SAGITTARIUS

As a Sagittarius, you love to explore, but you can also operate very spontaneously. How can you gear your attention towards being more organized about your pursuits?

CAPRICORN

Do you fear backlash when you let go of your routine? Remember: a lack of structure can be your best asset. Don’t lose all the structure you’ve built, but learn to let loose a little bit!

AQUARIUS

Innovation and progression are your games. You refuse to conform, and these are some of your most compelling traits. At times, it’s important to regard tradition before leaping further—you can learn the most from how history tends to repeat itself.

PISCES Your sister sign, Virgo, is in the spotlight this month along with Libra. Now, it’s time to focus on being less dreamy than you’re used to. Stay diligent, focused and clear-minded. Practicing this will bring you great rewards, and soon! hiltonhead.com

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS: • Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

please move off the pathway. • Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.

• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped,

• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

32 Island Events September 2022

• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic. • WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists. • YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right. • SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists. • At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map. • Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other. hiltonhead.com

PLACING VALUE ON THE SMALLER SHOTS

Best Practices for Putting

I

’ m known for saying that understanding the fundamentals makes golf more fun. Today, I want to share what I consider to be the five fundamentals of putting. Jack Nicklaus also acknowledged the importance of the putt, saying, “If you learn to putt correctly, your driver will improve.” I am inclined to agree. Here’s what I’ve learned in my decades on the green:

1

. Proper posture promotes the proper path. In golf, we bend from the hips, not the back. Eyes are over the ball, elbows are bent, and forearms are in alignment with the shaft.

2

. When we aim the putter at the target (not always the hole), the toe line is aiming parallel to the yellow line (to the left for a right-handed player).

3

. Your stance is the width of your hips and shoulders. For the best possible balance, feet should be under the knees and shoulders.

4

. Grip pressure should always be light, as if you are holding a ripe banana, or a tube of toothpaste with the cap off. You don’t want to get toothpaste everywhere!

50 Island Events September 2022

5

. The feel of the stroke is not unlike two dancers that ow gracefully together. Once the stroke is started with your shoulders, it is as if the putter is swinging on its own. The shoulder motion moves in harmony with the putter, swinging like a pendulum. Harvey Penick said, “Eat dinner with good putters.” His advanced students would ask him why. He would reply that good putters have lighthearted attitudes, they have been taught well and they know how to relax under pressure. I would add that good putters are also more likely to go into the next shot with a smile on their face. Whatever it is you need to work on, a ualified instructor can go a long way towards getting you on solid footing with the fundamentals of the game. Come see me anytime! Carolina’s PGA Teacher of the Year, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. He conducts “Where Does the Power Come From?” a free interactive clinic and demonstration every Monday from 4-5 p.m. at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. Volunteer for a free lesson and some will win prizes! Call (866) 455-6890 or go to www.palmettodunes.com for more information.

A First Mate's First Tarpon By Miles Altman, Bayrunner Fishing Charters

T

he sun was a warm, golden orb barely above the horizon, a dim light on a perfectly calm ocean, as the thin clouds acted as gauzy curtains. Around us, tarpon boiled everywhere, with an occasional slurp confirming that they were feeding on the “guppies,” as Capt. Peter called them. Capt. Peter explained earlier that when the water was really hot, the small fish living in the shallows off the deep channels would suffer oxygen deprivation and come to the surface for air, making them an easy target for the hungry tarpon. My son, Caleb, and I had been here with Capt. Peter the morning before to no avail, but as Caleb made his first cast this day, it was game on! Setting the hook sideways, “because their mouth points up,” just as Capt. Peter had directed in his raspy British accent, Caleb’s rod bent double and the drag screamed in protest. The fish then launched a series of acrobatic aerial displays that were awesome to behold. A couple more searing runs were followed by pulling the boat in a circle, only to make a couple of dazzling jumps right beside the boat. Caleb and the fish were both tired now, and as he worked the fish near the skiff, Peter donned a glove and remarked, “He’s

54 Island Events September 2022

not going to like this,” as he grabbed the tarpon by the lower jaw. As predicted, the tarpon thrashed and bolted away. Caleb groaned. “Bloody lucky he’s not real big, or you’d be doing this for another hour or two,” Peter said with a raspy laugh. At 25 minutes into the fight, Capt. Peter successfully lipped the tarpon, removed the hook and let Caleb hold him for the pic. Revived shortly thereafter, the 60-pound tarpon swam off lazily, and we had accomplished our mission — getting Caleb his first tarpon! You see, Caleb has fished with me since he could walk, and has mated hundreds of hours for me on my charter boats. He has seen many tarpon here in the Lowcountry as a crewman, but never as an angler. It was a bucket list item for a 17-year-old and is now a cherished memory for a proud dad. Watching him skillfully battle that tarpon brought home years of learning that culminated with a great angler and an awesome fish battling it out. By any measure, that’s a priceless experience. Capt. Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has more than 42 years experience fishing local waters. The Finatic boat, which can accommodate up to 12 passengers, features a special three-hour shark/dolphin eco-tour trip. Contact Miles at (843) 290-6955 to book an unforgettable inshore or offshore charter fishing trip, departing from Shelter Cove Marina. hiltonhead.com

nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips: • Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble. hiltonhead.com

Water Safety Tips: • Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.

Beach Prohibitions: The following are prohibited on all beaches: – Possession or consumption of alcohol – Glass (bottles, containers, etc.) – Littering – Indecent exposure or nudity – Disorderly conduct – Disturbing the peace – Unauthorized vehicles – Fires and fireworks – Shark fishing – Horseback riding or motorized driving – Removal, harming or harassment of any hiltonhead.com
