HILTON HEAD HISTORY
Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors. Thousands of Years Ago
Native Americans came to hunt and fish.
Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the Island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton’s Headland.”
The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, missionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Hilton Head became instrumental in the North’s blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.
Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of neon signs, became central to the Island’s character.

17th, 18th & 19th Centuries
For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today.
Post Civil War - 1956
After the Civil War, the Island’s population dropped to around 3,000, and by 1940, it had fallen to just over 1,000. Electricity finally came to the Island in 1950 and, six years later, Hilton Head’s very first bridge to the mainland made the area significantly more accessible.
Fraser’s legacy lives on in Hilton Head Island’s balance of commerce with green spaces, golf courses with wild places and thoroughfares with biking trails. Recently voted the Best Island in the U.S. by Travel and Leisure readers for the third time, this family-friendly sea island combines luxury, adventure and charm. jogging strollers. When was the last time you weren’t “crazy busy”? If this has become a constant in your life, you may want to take a step back to evaluate how well this works out for you. Are you getting what you need? If not, think on how you might make some changes.
TAURUS You have your eye on an activity you haven’t worked up the guts to try. What are you waiting for? New experiences are more powerful than almost anything else you could be spending your time on. This month, get off the sidelines and go for it. GEMINI
You may be experiencing the absence of something which nurtured you and the feeling just won’t go away. Whatever your outlet is, you need to take this ache and run, sing, write, or dance it out. It’s okay to feel this way, but you don’t want to waste too much time feeling bogged down. This month, do what you must to feel yourself again!
CANCER You are due for a creative awakening! It’s been a while since the gears have turned at top speed, so take advantage. You don’t need to shirk your responsibilities to make extra space for the Muse in your life, just do a little rearranging this month. LEO or o d happy balance between your curious side and your judgmental side. This month, reign in your judgement some and let your curiosity run free. The ensuing adventures could play a major ro r o o r . VIRGO
Your peace of mind is worth more than you think, Virgo. If someone is disturbing your peace, you need to troubleshoot a way to get it back. If it’s on them, how can you diplomatically call out this problem? If it’s your reaction that needs work, it’s worth getting that under control now rather than later. Your contentment depends on it! 24 Island Events September 2021
SEPTEMBER 2021 LIBRA That thing you’ve been putting off is taking up a lot of headspace. Even if you’re short on time, you can still start planning and organizing, contacting people, plotting your course and asking questions. This month, dispel your worries with forward momentum! SCORPIO
Glorious moments in the sun can leave us feeling a little burnt and you may be feeling crispy from the spotlight this month. Instead of dwelling on what you could have done better, pour your energy into making your next “performance” your best yet.
You care about the people close to you, of course, but it’s how you decide o o d o rr o ships. This month, make a choice every day to be the person you intend to be. Always showing respect is a great place to start.
Sometimes you feel incredibly sharp, and in other moments you can barely remember what you had for breakfast. This month, scout out your optimal work times, days, meals, caffeine intake and sleep cycles. Get ready, big changes are ahead!
You’ve been nagged lately by the feeling that you haven’t accomplished “enough.” But many who have achieved success, fame and fortune report feeling like imposters, themselves. This month, give yourself a break, be grateful for what you have and don’t believe everything you see on social media!
PISCES You have someone just on the periphery of your friend circle that it’s past time to bring in. Sometimes it’s scary to take that next step, but even if you have to go a few rounds to get something on the books, it will be worth it. hiltonhead.com

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE
The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS: • Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.
please move off the pathway. • Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.
• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.
• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.
• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped,
• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic. • WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists. • YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right. • SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists. • At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map. • Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other. hiltonhead.com

Golf for Better Health Three Awesome Side Effects of Playing By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy
I can’t count the ways I love the game of golf, but there are plenty of concrete reasons why golfers enjoy better health!
Lots of walking What other sport can lay claim to four-hour walks? Moderately paced walks promote healing, better sleep, a lower resting heart rate and long-term health in general. r o d o strolling beneath live oaks, loblollies and blue skies full of brown-tailed hawks, ospreys and the occasional bald eagle.
Improved mental clarity Clearing your mind can lead to a state of o o d enough to absorb all of the technical commands and you're just feeling the swing. Also, the breathing techniques we use in golf — in through the nose and out slowly — help to increase concentration and eliminate muscle tension. This allows us to let go of all of life's responsibilities for the moment, taking in the fresh air and exhaling the anxieties we feel.
Plenty of stretching Golf works the entire body! The golf swing stretches all of our muscles like rubber bands, which creates speed for the golf swing. This also helps players retain a good range of motion, which is so important to living a full life. In the beginning, positions are awkward and 50 Island Events September 2021
uncomfortable. With practice, muscles lengthen, reach improves and muscle memory takes over to create a natural d d . Have you been to the Robert Trent Jones Top Tracer Driving Range yet? This is the premier place on the Island to practice o r d o o groove. See you there! aleb had just tossed the live menhaden out. The rod immediately bent double and the line sizzled off the reel.
Thirty yards behind the boat, the chromeplated behemoth went ballistic, giving us a show of acrobatics second to none. And then, in the blink of an eye, he was gone. Caleb looked at me with that “what happened?” face. All I could say was, “That’s tarpon fishing, son!” If there is a silver lining to the dark cloud of the dog days of late summer fishing, it would be the silver king or tarpon that invade our local waters in full force in September. Averaging 80 to 120 pounds, there are few fish that can equal the ferocity of the tarpon when hooked up. Keeping them on the hook is the problem. How many you “jump,” as opposed to how many you catch, is the normal conversation amongst anglers discussing their day of tarpon fishing. With mouths like cement, blistering runs and multiple head-shaking aerial displays, sometimes you have to be just plain lucky to keep the hook in. Super tight drags, not normally recommended, seem to increase your odds of a hook-up. Both ends of the Island — Port Royal Sound to the north and Calibogue Sound to the south — are bordered by sandbars that stretch seaward for miles. The big schools of menha54 Island Events September 2021
den washing in and out with the tides often seek the shallow waters around the bars, looking for sanctuary from the marauding tarpon. Anglers usually concentrate their efforts along these sandbars, although many tarpon are caught in deeper holes too. These big silver fish also can be found in local rivers and creeks. More than once I have heard anglers tell of how they were reeling in a speckled trout back in the creek only to have a tarpon take their trout and all of their line. Fishing the shallow edge of deep holes in creeks can be quite productive, as tarpon are often seen “rolling” in these spots. As with most “ultimate gamefish,” a few seconds on the rod — and seeing the resulting show — will encourage anglers to spend hours of waiting and anticipation just to repeat the experience. Fishing for tarpon in the Lowcountry is an unforgettable experience for anglers of all skill levels. A one-word description of tarpon? Awesome! Capt. Miles Altman of Bay Runner Fishing Charters has more than 42 years experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. The Finatic boat, which can accommodate up to 12 passengers, features a special three-hour shark/dolphin eco-tour trip. nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.
Beach Marker Signs:
Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.
Beach Safety Tips: • Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble. hiltonhead.com
Water Safety Tips: • Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.
Beach Prohibitions: The following are prohibited on all beaches: – Possession or consumption of alcohol – Glass (bottles, containers, etc.) – Littering – Indecent exposure or nudity – Disorderly conduct – Disturbing the peace – Unauthorized vehicles – Fires and fireworks – Shark fishing – Horseback riding or motorized driving – Removal, harming or harassment of any hiltonhead.com
