ARIES You may be feeling at a crossroads this month, and the choices you have to make may feel too overwhelming. A pros and cons list could be of help, as is talking to those close to you. But beware of being led in one direction or another by someone else’s vision for you. This is your life, your decision and your consequences.
TAURUS Time and effort are the ingredients to success at pretty much everything. Great cooking, solid friendships, successful relationships, mastery of a language or an instrument. Where are you putting your time and effort and what are you getting out of it? This month, try to answer this question.
GEMINI If you’ve been at odds th a ose onfidant ate y, yo know how destabilizing it can be. Try to remember that each of our relationships fi s so eth n d erent, and e sho dn t be looking to one person to check all of our boxes.
CANCER There are few places in the U.S. where the month of May isn’t total perfection. It’s not too cold and not too hot, and it’s a big month for outdoor enthusiasts around the country. If you don’t already have big plans to spend May out of doors, think of it like investing in therapy, because nature is one of the best healers out there.
LEO You may have been presented with an opportunity to improve your life that will require a major lifestyle change you may not feel ready for. To address this dilemma, take some time to think about your long-term goals and aspirations. What is it going to take to get there and could this path help facilitate?
VIRGO It’s become a little too easy to read news articles that capture your interest, which can leave you with far less time to read actual books. But there is something to be said for the craft of a well-told story, the whole arc of its charac-
ters, the atmosphere and feeling a good book can conjure. Just a reminder, Virgo.
LIBRA You may confront a challenge or two to some very longheld beliefs this month. Even if they are the kind of beliefs you have spent a decade espousing, that’s okay. New information and perspectives can be powerful and meaningful, so don’t be afraid to embrace this change.
SCORPIO A potential new hobby may have you intrigued and also a little scared. Unless the fear deals with physical safety, try pushing it aside to make room for awe, instead. No one will be judging you more harshly than you.
SAGITTARIUS You may be putting things on the calendar that you want to do and then blowing right by them because your focus is elsewhere. Would it help to have weekly calendar meetings just to go over the possibilities and must-dos of the following week? This can be a useful activity, even if it’s just for yourself!
CAPRICORN You have stayed the course, and now you are reaping the enefits yo so are y so ed Remember to enjoy yourself a little—you worked hard for this moment!
AQUARIUS You are generally known as a kind person, but your being kind doesn’t mean you have to accept the bad behavior of others. If you feel like your kindness is being taken advantage of, it’s important that you step up and put boundaries in place. It’s not easy to do this, but it makes a big difference in the long run.
PISCES Throwing words and feelings back and forth is an exchange but it’s not communication. You may be guilty of this practice with someone you care about. Work on it this month!

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:
• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.
• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.
• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.
• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.
• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.
• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.
RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE
• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.
• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.
• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.
• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.
• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.
• Be courteous, alert and predictable.
• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.
• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.
• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.
• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.
• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.
• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.

My FRIEND and ALLY, SAND
How golfers can use this tricky substance to their advantage
By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy
Sand is my friend. Admittedly, it’s a statement debated by golfers everywhere. My thoughts are this: if you know what you’re doing, sand can be yo r a y n ak n a d fi t shot easy Some advanced players even prefer the sand to playing out of the long and scraggly grass, which can be unpredictable. In the Lowcountry, the rough is Bermuda grass, which has thick, coarse blades that grab the club head and can make it twist and stop.
For navigating in the sand, I recommend the following techniques:
• Soft hands allow wrist hinge, which will make for a higher trajectory.
• Keep an open stance with a slightly open club face. An open stance helps to regulate backswing and encourages the lower body to lead on the downswing.
• Regulate the distance of the shot with the amount of sand taken and the length of the backswing.
• Beware the bounce of the club head, which hits the sand before the leading edge, resulting in the ball bouncing up.
When executed correctly, the club head slices through the sand like a knife through warm butter. Sand really can be a golfer’s friend. It’s mine and it could be yours as well!
North Carolina and South Carolina PGA Teacher of the Year, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. He conducts “Where Does the Power Come From?”, a free interactive clinic and demonstration every Monday from 4-5 p.m. at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. •Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance.

•Call or wave for help if you are in trouble.
56 Island Events May 2023 hiltonhead.com
Water Safety Tips:
•Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim.
•Swim near a lifeguard.
•Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag.
•Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost.
•Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas.
•Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed.
•Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head.
•Don’t rely on flotation devices.
•Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances.
•Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull.
•Always swim sober.
