to roost and nest. Barred owls do not normally migrate. A study was done on 158 tagged owls, each of which didn’t move more than six miles during their lives.
https://wikimedia.org : Photo by Mwanner
During the day barred owls most commonly roost quietly in trees. However, they have been known to call during the day and sometimes even hunt small mammals. They are mainly nocturnal, using the nights to obtain the majority of their food. Because of their great eyesight, barred owls are able to catch all kinds of small mammals. The owls will perch on a limb, spot the prey, then swoop down and catch it with their sharp talons.
By Kathleen McMenamin Vicars, Master Naturalist
is the “who cooks for you” call, and it’s a O know call commonly heard year-round on Hilton Head ne of the most common owl calls that people
Island. Be sure to listen for it in areas with large live oaks and old wood forests.
The barred owl, Strix varia, is a large stocky owl with a rounded head and no ear tufts. Their feathers are most commonly striped brown and white, giving them great camouflage in thick forests. They have dark brown to black soulful eyes and they can grow to be 19 inches tall and have a 43-inch wingspan. The oldest recorded barred owl was 24 years old. Their fossils have been found in Florida, Tennessee and Ontario, Canada, dating back to 11,000 years ago. The common call of the barred owl is a simple “hoot” and “who, who cooks for you.” These owls are primarily an East Coast raptor. Since the 20th century they have been migrating west and can now be found in the Pacific Northwest and California. They prefer to live in large mature forests with both evergreens and deciduous trees. The larger and older trees provide ample crevices for them 36 Island Events August 2022
Barred owls have a very long nesting season. Courtship begins in February, with nesting starting in March and continuing all the way through August. This long nesting season allows a pair to lay a second nest, in case the first nest was lost. Males and females will pair for life, usually starting when they are at least a year old. They will then nest in cavities or take over old squirrel or crow nests. These owls do little to build or maintain their nests, possibly adding some moss or their own feathers at the most. Females may lay up to five eggs and are the primary incubator, sitting on the eggs for up to 33 days. The male will continue to bring food to their partner during the incubation. The young will leave the nest after six weeks. Barred owls fall victim to humans, whether it be through hunting, overforestation or road kill. But the only natural enemy to barred owls are great horned owls. Great horned owls have been known to eat eggs, young and even adults. If a great horned owl moves close to a barred owl’s territory, the barred will abandon it. Fire suppression and tree planting throughout the Central United States is the main reason for the spread of the barred owl. They have a high population and are not considered to be a species of concern. However, their movement towards the Pacific has put a lot of pressure on their endangered cousin, the spotted owl.

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE
The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS: • Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.
please move off the pathway. • Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.
• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.
• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.
• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped,
• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

An Unforgettable Fish Tale Battling a jack crevalle takes strategy, effort and time. By Miles Altman, Bayrunner Fishing Charters We were having fun at the nearshore reef, catching bluefish, summer trout and blackfish on light tackle when — all of a sudden — the small Fin Nor spinning reel started screaming as line rapidly disappeared off the spool. It didn’t take but a second to figure out the anchor had to come up — and quick — as the couple hundred yards of braid was almost gone. With the anchor up, we proceeded to chase the fish, angler in the bow, reeling frantically to get line back and to maintain a standing position as we bounced through the waves. Literally hours passed as the seesaw battle ensued, much to the chagrin of the angler’s companions, as they spent the bulk of their trip watching him battle this huge fish. Finally, after a couple hours, the angler was able to lift the fish near the surface and we could ID the culprit. It was a huge jack crevalle, and he was nowhere near giving up. The angler groaned as the line disappeared again and the large jack dug in and made another blistering run. We were now in overtime. We came up with a plan to work the fish back to the surface, at which point we would use a billfish tactic by charging him, using the boat and grabbing the leader. After two 70 Island Events August 2022
unsuccessful attempts, the third time was the charm and we boated a 37-pound jack crevalle! Everyone was happy for that battle to be over. We snapped a few pics and released a slightly tired jack. The jack crevalle is a fairly common fish in our waters, which is usually plentiful in summer. The big bruisers, usually in the 20 to 40 pound range, are often seen in big schools cruising on the surface. They are quite spooky and fast-moving, so one must be stealthy when sight fishing. Either live bait or artificials will get the job done. The bait must be placed in front of the school, but far enough to not spook the fish. These schools often swim erratically and fast. Medium to heavy tackle is recommended for these bulldog battlers… unless you have hours to spare, of course. Capt. Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has more than 42 years experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. The Finatic boat, which can accommodate up to 12 passengers, features a special three-hour shark/dolphin eco-tour trip. Contact Miles at (843) 290-6955 to book an unforgettable inshore or offshore charter fishing trip, departing from Shelter Cove Marina. hiltonhead.com

nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.
Beach Marker Signs:
Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.
Beach Safety Tips: • Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble. hiltonhead.com
Water Safety Tips: • Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.
Beach Prohibitions: The following are prohibited on all beaches: – Possession or consumption of alcohol – Glass (bottles, containers, etc.) – Littering – Indecent exposure or nudity – Disorderly conduct – Disturbing the peace – Unauthorized vehicles – Fires and fireworks – Shark fishing – Horseback riding or motorized driving – Removal, harming or harassment of any hiltonhead.com
